A/N: This is another little one shot I posted to tumblr. I am not really able to write long plot driven posts, but I have so much fun thinking about different scenarios. I hope it is alright with people that I am sharing them here as well. This one is an airplane AU of sorts that looks at a couple different types of passengers... Disclaimer: The mistakes are still mine, but the characters are not.

Flight Check

Sharon hit 'send' on the text just as she heard the gentle thud of the cabin doors closing upfront. She lifted her head to see the flight attendants gathering the extra seatbelts and oxygen masks for the safety demonstration, before dropping her gaze back to her phone and flipping the side switch to 'silent'.

"You're supposed to put it in airplane mode," Andy whispered anxiously over her shoulder. "They just came over the system and said airplane mode," he pointed to the phone in her hand, "Or better yet, maybe it would be safer just to shut it all the way down."

Slightly confused at his level of adherence to the rules she moved to tuck her phone away in her purse, "I'm sure it's fine, Andy. I assure you my cell phone being on silent will not alter the flight path in the slightest."

"Well, it could," he added looking nervously at the phone and then to the front of the plane. "I mean just a few years ago they had all of those warnings that they needed to be turned completely off. Something about the waves and the navigation system." Sharon rolled her eyes slightly, but before she could speak he continued, "and you know these planes aren't exactly new. I mean they keeping flying the same ones that were built decades ago. Sure they update them, but they're still old planes. How do they really know? Plus phones can blow up and catch fire, I mean - "

Sharon placed her hand on his forearm in an effort to stop his spiraling logic, "Andy, it will be fine." He gave her a slightly strained look causing her to bite down on her bottom lip to suppress a smile, "But just to be safe, here." She pulled her phone back out, dragged her finger down the screen, and tapped the image of the airplane, "Better?"

Andy let out a slow breath, "Maybe. Look - " he was cut off by the flight attendants beginning their pre-flight safety instructions. Andy shifted in his seat to turn his attention to the front of the aircraft.

Sharon looked up from tucking her bag under the seat in front of her, waiting for Andy to continue, "Look, what?" She asked not really listening to the announcements, "What were you about to say?"

"Shh, listen," Andy, whispered.

"… keeping in mind that they may be behind you." Andy swiveled his head to locate the nearest exits and to mentally calculate the distance to the closest one. Sharon bit down on her bottom lip once again, eyes following Andy's actions. She was not prepared for this kind of pre flight behavior. When they had decided to fly out to visit Emily he had been excited, but as the day got closer he seemed a little more on edge. Sharon assumed it was just related to getting everything taken care of before they left, and hoping they would not catch a case. However, now she was beginning to realize his growing anxiety might not have been related to normal scheduling issues.

"Andy," Sharon leaned over and whispered. He put his index finger to his pursed lips as a sign for her to be quiet and to pay attention. Sharon laughed quietly, "Andy, when was the last time you flew? Surely you know what they are going to say."

"It's been a while," he whispered through the corner of his mouth, eyes still straight ahead, "Now please, can we listen?"

Sharon stopped laughing and watched Andy as he paled slightly at the notion of possibly needing to use his seat cushion as a floatation device. She leaned over, "Oh don't worry there isn't an ocean in the middle of the country. I mean we aren't even flying over The Great Lakes, so we won't need the seats." Andy turned and cut his eyes at her with a 'you've got to be kidding me' look. Sharon raised her hands in defense, "Okay, okay we are listening," and turned to face the front of the plane.

When the demonstration ended Andy reached forward and pulled out the Safety Card from the seat back pocket. Sharon watched with amusement as he studied the pictures while the flight attendants moved down the aisle for their final checks. As the man passed by Andy lifted his arms to tug on his seatbelt like he was on a ride at Disneyland, showing that he was secure.

Unable to remain quiet any longer, or to hide her amusement at his dedication to the safety regulations, Sharon risked restarting their conversation, "When was the last time you flew? Didn't you fly to visit your sister not too long ago?"

"Well, it has been a while since I flew last," Andy replied glancing over at Sharon as the plane began rolling back from the gate. "When I visited her I just drove. We all met up in Arizona. Remember they moved out there after she and her husband retired?" He gripped the armrests tightly and took a breath, "Much better weather than New York, or at least winter-wise, for them."

Sharon patted his right arm and placed her hand to over his. Andy flipped his hand over and intertwined their fingers. Sharon smiled and leaned over, "It's alright Andy. In just a few hours we will be on the ground. Emily is waiting, and we have a whole weekend in New York." He took a calming breath and rolled his head to the side as she continued, "We are going to watch her dance, and at some point you are going to show me where you used to live. It is going to be great." She smiled reassuringly as he nodded his head in agreement.

"I know, I know. It will be fine. People fly everyday."

"Yes, they do." Sharon placed her head on his shoulder as the pilot announced they were cleared for departure and next up for take off.
