When the adults all left I hooked around the room that we had been dropped off in. The other boy seemed to know what was going on and was just watching me with a small smile on his face I caught right before he turned his head. I sat down in the seat across from him and for about 5 minutes we sat there in awkward silence, until he said "You must be new here. My name is Phil Coulson!" "Yep, my name is Emily, just Emily." I kept looking down at my hands until he came over and put his hands on mine and said "I know about your past. My parents told me before we came. I am so sorry about, well your entire life. Apparently my parents are adopting you so you are technically my little sister." I stopped when he said this and just stared at him for a minute. Then when he was about to open his mouth I ran into his arms just to feel that warm embrace of another human being that actually cared about me. "I'm never going to let anything happen to you sis" he said as we stood there in each other's embraces. As we steppe back from each other the adults came back in talking about something called Gama radiation. Phil and I listened silently while they went on and on about how science really needed more people who understood how Gama radiation really worked. "Everyone stopped trying after Captain America" Phil whispered to me as the scientists continued to complain. I didn't know it then, but those scientists helped me decide what to do with my life. Just when the scientists started talking about the specific details someone noticed me and Phil and everyone went back to work silently. It was a couple of hours later when Nick and Phil's parents came back to get us. In those few hours Phil and I started to talk about our pasts in detail. Phil had also had an interesting life so far. He had never spent a single day in public school. His parents were secret agents in this organization called S.H.I.E.L.D. During the day Phil would have a different agent teach him a different skill or technique. This was because there was no school around the base. During the night he would get tours around different offices and store rooms on the base. When the other adults came back in it was just to tell us that they needed to work tonight so we would have to entertain ourselves. When they had left Phil said "Want to see some of my favorite spots on base?" "Why would I say no" I replied as he had already started to drag me off. For the rest of the night Phil showed me all of his favorite areas and even some of his secret areas that no one knew about. When dawn finally broke we went Phil's mother and she was sort of like our teacher for the next couple of years. My life was great! I had a family and friends for the first time in my life. After about three years of this Phil's mom brought some new information to light. "Next thing you two have to worry about is college!" I had no idea what she was talking about, but I was sure she would explain. When Phil left to go ask his father she turned to me and said "I know this will be a little confusing at first, but I'll help you through this. First off, you have to decide what you want to do with your life." That was easy for me because I had chosen this years ago. "I would like to be a scientist working with Gama radiation!" She looked pleased, "Well, that is very good to know. Now, you have the tough decision of finding the right school." At that mention all my fears seamed to come back. "Do you mean with other people?" I asked very nervously. She smiled and as she put her arms around me she said "Yes, you will have to go out into the real world. But no one will want to harm you. As long as you hide those glorious wings of your." I smiled and for the first time I was excited to go out into the world out side S.H.I.E.L.D's base. For the next couple of months Phil and I scanned through list after list of colleges. Phil wanted to stay in S.H.I.E.L.D so he was looking for colleges with kind of major in communication. I was still looking for something to do with Gama radiation, but that was easier said than done. There was a very short list of colleges that had any kind of major with Gama radiation. By the looks of our lists it looked like Phil and I would be going to different colleges. At the end of our college selections we were going to separate colleges. I don't know the name of the college he got accepted to. Me on the other hand, I got accepted to the California Institute of Technology. It looked like a brilliant school. Plus, after my college interview they offered me a full scholarship because I really knew my stuff about Game radiation. The last day at the base was a sad one. Phil and I went around to all the departments; then we spent the rest of the night talking. "Wow, I can't believe this is our last night together," I said as the sun started to rise. Phil put his arm around me and said "It's not the last time we'll se each other. Just think about it as a vacation. You get to meet new people and we still have the rest of our lives to see each other again." We sat there in each other's embrace until his mother and father finally come around and said it was time to go. He smiled at me and whispered "I promise we'll see each other again." As he walked away I felt a warm hand on my shoulder and heard the familiar voice of Nick Furry say "It's time for you to go as well." I turned around and said "Thank you for everything that you have done for me." He simply smiled, slipped his arm around me and said "I promise I will never use S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources to find you unless the world's safety is at stake." As I walked to the car that would take me to the airport I suddenly had the urge to stay here at the base, but I knew I could not do that. I knew that I needed to take this step, somehow I knew that college would be a new beginning. No one would know me and they would not experiment on me. As the plane landed in California I started playing with my hair. When I got off the plane I entered the baggage claim area and it was packed with so many different people. So many people who had no idea what I was capable of. As I left with my two bags I started having real fears creep into my head. When I finally found my way to the pickup area I easily found a taxi. Luckily he knew how the whole college ordeal worked and knew exactly where to drive me. As he was driving me he started to just randomly talk to me. "Well college is completely different from high school. Besides all the stereotypes. They're still there, but let me guess a complete nerd in high school." "Actually, I was home schooled." He gave a slight giggle and I knew he would be the only one to hear that. "Well, you'll be fine. No one is going to judge you" he said as we drove up to the school. I quickly paid and got out of the cab before I said something else I may learn to regret. As I entered the school I could not believe the size of it. The lobby was huge and I already felt lost. Luckily there was a million signs pointing me in the right direction. As I started for the freshmen orientation I noticed a shabby looking man, who appeared to be a couple of years older than me. I then noticed the millions of papers and objects that he was trying to carry. I decided orientation could wait and he needed my help now. I ran over to him and asked "Do you need any help with all that?" "Thank you" he said as he offered me half the stack. "You're a freshmen aren't you" he asked as I started to follow him. "Yes I am, is it that obvious" I asked nervously. "Considering that everyone hates me and tries to stay away from me yes, it is really obvious." "Oh" is all I could muster up from my absolute embarrassment. "Sorry, that was mean. My name is Bruce Banner, by the way" he said as a way to cheer me up. I looked up at him and replied "My name is Emily Coulson" I replied, deciding to take Phil's last name as a way to remember him. He smiled and replied "That's nice to hear. So, next question, what are you majoring in?" "I'm majoring in general chemistry, but mainly focusing in gama radiation." He then just stopped and started to giggle. I hadn't noticed myself say anything that funny so I stopped and looked on confusingly. "I'm sorry about that. It's just that I'm one of the three professors here that teach gama radiation." I was very relieved to gear that and just continued to smile. As we continued to walk Bruce started talking about the actual classes and what I may be doing. "You see, I am actually a senior myself." "Congrats" is all I could think of. When we finally reached his classroom he had me put my pile of papers on his desk. "Now, one last little warning for tomorrow. Don't be surprised if there are not as many girls in your classes here as there were at your old school." I smiled and said "Thanks for the tips." He put his hand on my shoulder and said "That's what I'm here for." I smiled back and for one of the first times in my life I had managed to make a friend on my own. As I left Bruce's classroom I heard him yell "The last orientation is in two minutes." "Thank you" I yelled back before I started sprinting down the hallway.
