Chapter 2: the truth
Finn awoke to see bright sunlight flooding his room in the tree house. "wait wha-? Wheres marceline? I could've sworn..." he was absolutely puzzled. Where could the vampire be? Why was he in his room? the dream had seemed so real to him, he really thought everything from last night had transpired. He sat up and scratched the back of his head, "damn, and here I thought I'd get to wake up to a sexy vampire lady. Oh well." he rose from his bed and put on his new traditional set of clothes. These days he wore a pair of worn out blue jeans with any random t-shirt he could find lying around. For shoes he usually wore this pair of cool looking low cut sneakers the cobbler at the candy kingdom had whipped up to fit his fashion sense. He loved how they fit, but that's to be expected since they were enchanted to fit his feet perfectly every time he put them on. He slipped on his pants and picked up a white t-shirt he found lying on the ground. After sniffing at it and deciding it wasn't too smelly for one more wear, he slipped it on and headed downstairs to get some breakfast. "yo Jake! Where you at boi!?" he walked over to their breakfast table and noticed there was a note laying on it. "huh? What's this?"
Dear Finn,
I'm gonna be away at lady's for about a week or so so don't do anything dumb while I'm gone! And no girls in the tree house either! If you go out on an adventure or something make sure to lock up and take some snacks with you so you don't starve.
With much love,
your brother, Jake
"well dick, now I have to make breakfast." he looked at the stove. The last time he had attempted to cook something he almost burned the house down. "nah, I'm good" he laughed awkwardly "guess it's boring breakfast for me today." he pulled the cereal off the top of the fridge and poured himself a bowl of frosted waffle bits, some strange cereal Jake picked up from the candy kingdom. He knew if he kept eating sugar like this he was gonna have some serious problems, but honestly he didn't care at the moment, he just needed something to put in his belly. He started thinking of what he should do after he finished his cereal. 'I could go to the candy kingdom and see if theres anything PB needs help with' he thought. 'maybe I could go find a dungeon to raid or something.' he was utterly lost in thought until he realized he was at the end of his bowl. At that point he decided to just leave the house and see where the day took him, he didn't feel like just lazying around all day. He rinsed his bowl and spoon and put them in the strainer to dry. He ran upstairs real quick to grab his pack and put on his shoes and was all ready to run out the door, but the second he stepped foot outside he remembered. "right, I have to pack a sandwich, thanks Jake." he ran back in the house and quickly opened the fridge to snatch the ingredients he needed, but realized there were about 12 pre-made already sitting on the third shelf. "I love you so much dude." he was so grateful Jake knew he was impatient and had prepared accordingly. He snatched one and closed the fridge, bolting out the door and locking it as quick as he could. He took a deep breath and looked to the sky "today is gonna be a good day." That was the plan, anyhow.
For some reason lately Finn had a strange distaste for his white and blue sword that held the other Finn. Initially he had chalked it up to having a weird day, but as time went on that simple answer turned into nothing more than a lie he told himself to avoid the truth. Inside he knew he resented the sword, and there was a good reason why. Up until about three months ago, Finn had nothing but admiration for the blade, it killed things pretty good, it looked rad, and most importantly, he was the only one besides Jake who could understand just how unique the sword was. He had thought of it as fighting beside himself and, in a way, that seemed pretty damn cool, but eventually he started to see it as sort of a fate he was given. The other Finn had died in order to create this blade and in a way, Finn started to see this as something more. He interpreted it to be the fate of all adventurers. He knew that eventually everything died, but for an adventurer there was always more risk because of the life they chose. To die in battle was a fate that was possible for all people who called themselves adventurers, but even worse was that you could die anywhere, anytime, and you could die without someone even knowing. So inside his heart the young hero wished to get rid of the sword. He wouldn't throw it away, it was a different him after all, and he respected the fact that it used to be a person and had feelings at one point in time. He decided to bury it in a thick slab of enchanted stone so that only someone with a pure paragon heart could retrieve it. Another adventurer would come along one day well after he was gone and retrieve the blade and be granted the title hero, just as he was. He drew the blade from his pack. "we've had some good times together eh other me?" he looked into the blue orb at his reflection "I just think it's time for me to move on, I can't keep clinging to my doubt." He sheathed his blade and continued walking. This was his first task of the day, so he decided to hurry up and get all this depressing stuff over with so he could have a great rest of the day.
After about an hour of walking, two fights with trolls, and a little parkour just for fun, Finn found himself sitting at the foot of the mountain. "Here we go" he declared, and he started climbing the mountain. After a half an hour of climbing, rocks breaking, and near falls to his death, he had finally reached the top. He pulled a pebble made of obsidian from his pocket. "crescat..." he whispered, and he threw the pebble at the ground. When the pebble hit the soft earth a magic symbol appeared on it and glowed a bright blue before it grew into a massive, smooth slab of obsidian. "Glob I love these enchantments." A few months ago, before Finn's 17th birthday, he was adventuring in a dungeon by himself and encountered an evil necromancer that held a tome said to have immense magical knowledge hidden inside, in fact, it was the whole reason he was there. Magic was something Finn had always been interested in learning, but with all his hero antics up until that point he had no free time. Lately with the litch gone and monsters receding, he could take some time to catch up and do other things. The tome held inside it a full catalog of enchantments as well as a basic outline of how they work and how to create new ones. In order to activate the enchantment placed on the item you have to speak in Latin, a language Finn learned was from the ancient days before the war. Initially he had some trouble finding out about it, until he talked to PB, she had tons of knowledge about it and even gave him a Latin/English dictionary. After that he kept studying the book for months and practicing until he gained an immense understanding of it, as well as the Latin language. At this level of understanding, one could even say he was a master at it. The one rule of enchantments that the book warned him about, however, was that you should never enchant people, otherwise it would interrupt the flow of magic energy in their body and destroy them.
Finn touched the smooth slab and the symbol appeared once more. An enchanter was able to design their own 'Enchanter's Sigil' which was a symbol they bestowed upon their creations to bind their enchantments to them, as well as mark it to show it was theirs. Finn's enchanter's sigil was 2 swords crossed in an X with a third running down the middle between them and the swords were surrounded in a circle that held small magic runes. After his sigil appeared, Finn broke the shrink/grow enchantment he had placed on it in order to make room for the new enchantment he intended to place. The book said you could place more than one enchantment on an item, but he hadn't made it to that level of mastery yet. "unum bonum, in corde puro, et hoc ferrum vibrare." only one with pure good in their heart may wield this blade. His sigil appeared again and magic runes started to flow from it in lines all across the stone. He unsheathed his blade one final time and looked into the orb "goodbye, old friend. Hopefully adventure awaits you in another persons life." With that said, he spun the sword in his hand so the blade was on the bottom, gripped it with both hands, and plunged it into the huge rock that sat before him. "well that was emotionally exausting." He sat down and broke a sandwich out of his pack. He sat there, eating and watching the clouds roll by. This world is so peaceful he thought I wish it could be this way all the time. He finished his sandwich in no time and was thinking about what to do next. Well, I'm gonna need a new weapon I guess, so I should head down to the market and see what they have he thought. He started walking in the direction of the market, trying to decide what kind of weapon he wanted.
He got to the market a little after 2:30 and decided to browse around for a little while. He passed several stalls that had exceptional looking weapons, but he wasn't looking for just any old sword, he wanted the hookup on a real nice weapon he'd hang on to for awhile. So he was headed for his main man choosegoose's stall at the end of the market square. Choosegoose only noticed him when he was almost right next to the stall. "Finn! My friend! Come here, how are you? What can I do for the greatest hero in all of Ooo?" "Hey Choosegoose" Finn said "I need a new awesome sword, my other one is... gone" "Well Choosegoose can definitely help you with that, but business is business, so money, trade, or skat!" He said. "I can apply enchantments to some of the weapons you're selling so you can make more money, is that a suitable trade?" Finn asked. "Enchantments?" Choosegoose asked "You know enchanting my boy?" Finn immediately sensed something wrong, there was never a time when Choosegoose wasn't rhyming. "um... yeah I do, are you alright Choosegoose?" Finn asked. Choosegoose's face was serious and his body language was off too, he wasn't flailing his arms about and making funny faces like he always did. "You have stepped foot into the world of magic Finn, my weapons are of no use to you now." he said plainly. "What do you mean Choosegoose? Your weapons have always been the bomb! Why wouldn't I want them anymore?!" he asked furiously. "Because boy, the world of magic is much more exciting and wondrous than you could ever imagine, once you learn it, you'll never need another primitive weapon again..." Finn could tell he was sad, but he didn't know why. So what if he wanted to learn magic and didn't need primitive weapons anymore, what was wrong with that? "and if you don't need weapons anymore, you'll never have a reason to come see old Choosegoose anymore..."
Finn's anger was replaced with a smile. "Choosegoose, me and Jake won't ever stop coming to visit you when we're in the market, you're our friend man." Finn said. "really? Do you mean it?" CG replies. "Of course I do dude, you're our friend and that won't ever change." Finn held his fist out for a fist bump. Choosegoose stared at his hand for a second before he smiled and hit it, his head and arms started flailing around like normal, and he laughed as if he had just triumphed in a great battle. It made Finn smile to see his friend so overjoyed like this. "If that's the case, then your enemies better pray, because this sword I give you, demons it slay!" That's good Finn thought he's back to his old self again. "It slays demons?" Finn asked. "yep, it's enchanted with fire, something every demon hates, and it cuts so smooth you could serve them up on plates!" Choosegoose took one of the swords off of the wall and gave it to Finn. He held it in his hands and stared at the sheathe. It had skulls made of steel at the top and the bottom and the midsection was wrapped in rubber with golden magic runes placed along the surface. "the sheathe is enchanted" he looked at the handle on the sword. The guard was steel and almost nonexistent, but that was fine with Finn, he'd never really used swords with guards anyway. The handle was wrapped in rubber just like the sheathe, and the pommel was a black steel construction designed to look like the head of a dragon. When he pulled the sword from its sheathe, the blade burst into flames. He could see the golden runes running along the edge of the smooth, black blade. "so the sheathe and the sword are both enchanted" Finn stated. "quite right my boy, that there definitely isn't a toy." Choosegoose said. "what kind of sword is this?" Finn asked. It looked like a two handed straight sword, but it had almost no guard and a deep bevel in the middle. "It is a sword called diphos by the Greeks, I've never heard the word before, probably some ancient civilization of geeks!" "This is totally awesome Choosegoose, I'll take it." Finn proclaimed. "This one is on the house, my friend" Choosegoose smiled and waved him off to his next adventure.
It took Finn about 5 hours to get home, and by the time he got there he was exhausted. He walked in, locked the door behind him, and headed straight up to his room. He threw his pack on the ground and set his new sword up against his bed post. He flopped down on the bed and realized two things: 1. he wasn't going to get to sleep with his clothes on and 2. he hadn't eaten dinner and he was starving. He stripped to his boxers and crawled under the covers. "BMO!" the tiny robot crawled up the stair just minutes later. "what is it Finn?" "can you go downstairs in the fridge and give me one of those salami sandwiches that Jake made for me please?" "Sure thing Finn, be right back!" "thank you!" he yelled as the little mo scurried off to find him a sandwich. A couple minutes later BMO came back with the sandwich and crawled on to the bed. "here you go Finn" "thank you BMO, I'm gonna eat this and go to bed so I'll see you when I wake up ok?" "Ok, goodnight Finn sleep well!" BMO somersaulted over Finn's neck and karate chopped him once he made it over "BMO chop,,," the mo whispered "no one is safe..." Finn giggled a little at how funny and cute this little robot could be sometimes. "Goodnight BMO" Finn ate his sandwich in minutes and he just barely managed to finish it before he passed out and wandered into dreamland.
A/N: Hey guys! I know it's been like, you know, three whole years since I've actually uploaded onto this story but hey, better late than never right? Anyway I'm hoping to get back into this story and make more chapters for it because I recently re-explored this pairing and realize it's my favorite out of all the ones in adventure time. Magic and adventure are going to play a major role in this story and I will have some actual finnceline later on I promise! For now, thanks to you all for reading hope to see you in my next chapter!
P.S.: Sorry about the paragraphs being so long and hard to read guys I just can't figure out the way this format works, maybe next chapter eh?
