Upon The Stars We Shall Dance
Chapter 2 - The Étoile, the Jeweler, and a Proposition
Wednesday, April 27th
Astraea Suburbs, Early Afternoon
The next two weeks were a bit of a blur for Chiyo. When she awoke after confessing to her Onee-chan, she found her sitting by her side smiling as if nothing in the world could bother her, though Chiyo could tell something had changed in her friend, as if a weight had been lifted from her shoulders.
There were... other changes as well. She noticed the soft smiles Nagisa would give to her throughout the day. Then there were the little signs of affection that seemed to happen more often than before. The gentle and warm hugs, the light kisses on the forehead or cheek, and even holding her hand as they walked under an umbrella in the spring rain. Maybe it was just her imagination, but Chiyo couldn't help but feel something was different. However, it was when Nagisa had returned from her usual weekend visit with Shizuma that she knew for certain something had changed. There was an air of confidence about her, unlike she had seen in sometime. Upon seeing Chiyo, she had given her quite possibly the most passionate hug she had ever known.
Last night though, that persona had faded to reveal a nervous and timid girl who had stopped by her room to invite her out for the weekend with her and Shizuma. It was odd, if Chiyo hadn't known better she would have thought Nagisa was asking her out on a date, though that was impossible for obvious reasons.
So now Chiyo found herself walking down the street with her Onee, her overnight bag in hand. Looking to her side, she could feel the anxiety coming from Nagisa, as the two had walked almost in silence since they had left the train that took them down the hill and into town. Thinking she should do something to ease the tension, Chiyo softly slipped her hand into Nagisa's... which only startled the nervous girl. Feeling her cheeks heat up in embarrassment, she looked away and pulled her hand back only to feel Nagisa's clasp hers.
"It's alright, I'm just a little on edge I guess." Chiyo cast a curious glance at her Onee, but before she could say anything else they had stopped at the entrance of a café, apparently arriving at their destination, and there, sitting on the café's patio was the familiar silver-haired Étoile of Astraea legend and Nagisa's lover: Hanazono Shizuma.
Tsukidate Chiyo's Story
Impossible Equality
"Shizuma!" Chiyo followed as Nagisa bounded over to her significant other, seemingly once again confident and carefree. It often puzzled her how Nagisa's moods could change at the drop of a hat at times. She often wondered if Nagisa was merely bottling up her fears and worries, though in this case she was sure the sudden shift was due to genuinely being happy to see Shizuma.
As the silver-haired temptress looked up from her laptop to greet them, Chiyo quietly reflected on just how much Shizuma had changed in the last two years. While her personal interactions with her were limited, she was well aware of not only her legendary antics, but of course bore witness to the heartfelt declaration of love she gave during the final coronation of the infamous Étoile competition two years ago, and the resulting chaos it created.
The Sisters had predictably come down hard on such an action, not just for the dramatic interruption of one of Astraea's most sacred traditions, but also for such a brazen public declaration of love for another girl. It was vexing to the young intellectual how on one hand the Étoile was all but a celebrated marriage of two girls, while on the other, such relationships were banned and punished when made public. To say it was hypocritical was an understatement to the young maiden, though she could only wonder of the difficult position it put the Sisters in on a constant basis, especially in this case.
While the administration had attempted to keep the isolation of the "Miator Four," as they became known, once word got out of their punishment and possible expulsion, the three schools that occupied the hill had almost rioted and refused to attend classes. It had taken the new Étoile of Otori Amane and Konohana Hikari from Spica, backed by the "Holy Mother" of Le Rim herself, Minamoto Chikaru, to placate things. With a promise of leniency secured by the trio somehow, the students of the hill had returned to their lives, though the very astute Chiyo could tell something had changed.
"Chiyo-chan?" Broken from her thoughts, Chiyo suddenly realized she was staring directly at her silver-haired senpai and probably had been for some time. She could only imagine how silly she must have looked right then and only felt worse when Shizuma lowered her computer glasses and gave her a playful, yet paralyzing look that even from across the patio made her feel as if the two of them were the only ones that existed at the moment.
"My, what an intense stare. I wonder what you're thinking about." Chiyo bit her lip softly as her mind raced to try and formulate a response, though under Shizuma's hypnotizing gaze it was hard even to breathe. Thankfully, Chiyo had an ally who knew all too well what that stare could do.
"Shizuma, you promised you wouldn't tease her." At once, Shizuma blinked and softened her gaze as Chiyo felt her body relax and her mind become unclouded.
So that was the famous "Shizuma Stare," how does Nagisa resist such a thing?
"My apologies Chiyo-chan, sometimes I just can't help myself. Please take a seat, I'll buy you a parfait as an apology." Chiyo nodded and took her seat, setting down her overnight bag.
"Thank you, Shizuma-sama and I'm sorry for staring." She kept her head down slightly in part as a sign of apology, but also because she was unable to bring herself to look at the temptress after such a gaze. Shizuma, for her part, merely smiled and lightly waved off the apology as she took off her computer glasses and set them down before sliding the computer over to Nagisa.
"Nagisa, could you take a look at it again? I can't seem to get the internet working." Chiyo couldn't help but notice the slightly exasperated look on her Onee's face as she took the laptop and began to fiddle with it.
"You did remember to turn on the wireless this time didn't you?" Shizuma merely shrugged and took a sip of her tea, trying to hide the slightly embarrassed look on her face. It had surprised Chiyo at first to learn that the "Great" Hanazono Shizuma, who many praised as a perfect woman, had little experience with computers, though in retrospect it made sense.
Miator had no computer lab or courses of its own, those primarily belonged to one of the sister schools of the hill, Spica. Le Rim, the third school, had its own meager computer course as well, though it was only for basic skills. Besides, when you were being groomed to become the perfect bride, being able to use a computer was the least of your concerns, not to mention you would likely have servants to handle such things for you.
So upon entering University, and no longer willing to just be a "bargaining chip" as she put it, Shizuma found herself rather behind the curve technology wise. A lot changes in six years and technology had grown by leaps and bounds. Yet despite all that, Shizuma persevered and found a way to keep her grades at the top of the class, with some help from Nagisa that is, who was a little more versed in these things.
"Got it, it looks like you accidentally disabled the wireless." Chiyo watched Shizuma's face go from placid to almost indignant as she nearly spit out a mouthful of tea.
"Impossible! I made sure the switch was on this time!" Nagisa turned the laptop so her lover could see the keyboard, a calm smile on her face, though Chiyo couldn't help but notice the words "this time."
"Yes, but if you press these keys at the same time," Chiyo saw her Onee press what she had to assume was the function key as well as one of the number keys, no doubt using a common feature of most modern laptops to quickly turn on and off the wireless communications via keystroke. "Then it turns off the wireless as well. You probably went to enter a symbol and just hit the wrong key."
Shizuma let out an exasperated groan and looked away pouting. It was certainly a side of her Chiyo was sure few got to see, but even she had to admit the sight of this normally confident woman acting so childish was kind of cute.
"Keep that stupid thing away from me. Really, why would someone design it in such a way?" Chiyo tried to suppress a giggle as Nagisa just sighed and took the laptop back, Shizuma begrudgingly taking another sip of her tea.
"You could always take a class at the university Shizuma-sama. I'm sure you'd pick up the skills quickly that way." Shizuma responded by setting her teacup down and looking at Chiyo with an air of defiance.
"Do you really think I would admit to such a flaw? These skills are supposed to be basic," Chiyo shrunk down in her seat a bit, unsure if she had actually just insulted the intense and passionate woman sitting across from her. Though as if sensing Chiyo's unease, Shizuma gently smiled and added, "Besides, it cuts into my electives then."
"Yes, because it was so crucial for you to take that class where you got to paint nude models." The annoyance in Nagisa's voice was easily apparent. Chiyo remembered Nagisa being rather upset when Shizuma had taken the class, and having to convince her Onee her lover wasn't bored or looking to cheat on her.
"I don't recall you complaining when I asked you to be my model for my final project." Shizuma was quick as ever to press her point as Chiyo watched the indignation build on Nagisa's face.
"You made me look fat!" Shizuma could only grin and look lovingly at her other half.
"I happen to like your little 'sweets' belly my dear." Chiyo brought her hand to her mouth to quickly try and hide her amused smile as she watched the two argue, silently agreeing with Shizuma.
"You turned it in!"
"And your beautiful figure got me an A might I add."
Chiyo could no longer contain her laughter and the two looked at her, one in bemusement and the other in annoyance.
"I'm sorry, but the two of you really were meant for each other with the way you argue." Nagisa just sighed slightly, defeated as Shizuma grinned and got up before hugging her lover from behind and lightly kissing her cheek.
"I love you, my Nagisa" Chiyo could only watch in a mix of jealousy and joy as she saw the redhead's cheeks flush and hear her mumble something back quietly.
Returning to her seat a few moments later, Shizuma called over a waitress and ordered two parfaits, saying she'd share with Nagisa. Once the desserts had been delivered, Shizuma quietly tipped the waitress asking not to be disturbed until she called for her, something Chiyo couldn't help but wonder about as she felt the tension from earlier returning, even as Nagisa dug into her snack.
"So I heard you confessed to Nagisa." Suddenly Chiyo didn't feel as hungry as she tensed up, her eyes widening as a feeling of dread and worry built in her stomach. A million horrible thoughts went racing through her mind as she began to catastrophize her current predicament.
"It's alright Chiyo-chan. We wouldn't have invited you to stay the weekend with us if I was angry. I may be a jealous woman, but I'm not that cruel." Despite seeing Shizuma calmly sip her tea, and as addled as her mind was at the moment, Chiyo could sense some anxiety in the normally stoic Étoile eyes. Forcing herself to take a breath, she nodded slightly for her to continue, still feeling very much timid and worried.
"I'm honestly a bit surprised it took this long. However, I also understand your reasons for keeping those feelings bottled inside, and for that I have a great deal of respect for you Chiyo-chan." This was all sounding a bit too much like what her Onee said. But at the same time, it was reassuring to hear those sincere words come from Shizuma's mouth. As she continued, Chiyo couldn't help but notice the former Étoile start to play with the engagement ring that adorned her finger.
"Nagisa would like you to spend more time with us and I agree..." Chiyo saw Shizuma take a breath and Nagisa reached over and put a hand on top of her lover's.
What in heaven could have her so rattled?
"There is something we'd like to ask you, we can continue like this, oui?" It took Chiyo's mind a moment to realize Shizuma had suddenly switched to French of all things, despite Nagisa's adverse attitude to the language. Seeing her Onee nod, Chiyo turned back to Shizuma more curious than ever as to what could be so private they'd have to switch languages.
"Oui, Shizuma-sama. Is there something I can help you with?" Chiyo saw Nagisa fidget slightly in the corner of her eye, suddenly very interested in her parfait.
"Non, at least not in the sense you're probably thinking." Shizuma took a breath and rested one of her hands casually on the table as she continued. "There is something that Nagisa and I had discussed doing at one point and we wanted to ask if you wanted to join us."
As simple as the question may have been, Chiyo knew there was something they were hesitant to ask. Nodding softly, yet steeling herself for every possibility she could think of, the young maiden answered.
"What is it?" Chiyo watched as Shizuma extended three fingers out from the hand resting on the table, looking right into Chiyo's eyes with apprehension and worry.
"A trois" Chiyo blinked in confusion at Shizuma's answer of suddenly throwing out the number three. It was only when Shizuma, noting the young girl's confusion, crossed the fingers together did the full realization of what was being asked hit her.
A ménage-a-trois?!
That... had not even been close to being in Chiyo's innocent mind. Granted, while she did have feelings for Nagisa, the thought of actually sleeping with her was an impossibility in her mind. As for Shizuma, while she was a beautiful woman and Chiyo respected her, she really didn't know anything about her, merely her legend and what Nagisa told her. A dark thought suddenly passed through her frantic mind. What if that's why they asked me to spend the weekend!
"We didn't mean today of course." Almost as if reading her mind, Shizuma's words cut down the worry and Chiyo couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief, causing a rather nervous Nagisa to suddenly revert back to Japanese.
"Please don't think badly of us Chiyo! I... I mean, we..." Chiyo could easily see the fear of rejection in Nagisa's face, no doubt afraid Chiyo would think she and her lover were just a pair of perverts looking to prey upon the young girl.
"Nagisa, I... I could never think badly of you." Chiyo had been so quick to respond, she also slipped back into her native tongue before remembering the topic at hand and switching back to French. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Shizuma look down slightly, realizing her faux pas at leaving out the elder woman's name.
"Nor do I think ill of you Shizuma-sama. I just..." Feeling very small again, Chiyo looked down at her untouched parfait, confidence never being her strong point. "Why me? I'm nothing special..."
"You're wrong Chiyo-chan." What surprised Chiyo wasn't the words, but who said them. Looking up and into Shizuma's eyes, she could see the sincerity on her face as she continued.
"Our interactions on and off the hill have been few, but I've been able to feel your influence through Nagisa. I've seen the way you've supported, guided, and taken care of her when I cannot be there." She saw Shizuma glance slightly at Nagisa before continuing.
"I've held her as she's sobbed and beat herself up the few times you've fought. And, I've listened to her as she poured her confused heart out after your confession, overjoyed she could invoke such feelings and guilty for the times she's dumped all her problems on you, much like I did to Miyuki..." She could clearly see the pained look on the Étoile's face, and while she didn't know the full story of what occurred between her and Miator's famous president, the regret was plain as day.
"I am a very jealous woman Chiyo..." The lack of honorific further surprised the young girl, but given the situation she could tell Shizuma was trying to connect with her on an equal level. There was no senpai or kohai here, merely three people bearing their hearts to each other.
"You've had every chance to drive a wedge between Nagisa and I, and instead you've done nothing but try to reinforce our love. That's why I'm ok with doing this. I trust you won't take advantage of such an opportunity." The sincere words touched Chiyo's heart deeply. To be held in such high regard by anyone was a surprise to the young one and she could feel her eyes watering.
"Whether you accept this proposition in the future or never is up to you. Either way, we want to include you in our lives. The only reason we even brought this up now was we didn't want to talk to you about it later and have you think the time we were spending together was all just a ploy." As backwards as it sounded, Chiyo could see Shizuma's logic in taking this path. She was known as a serial heartbreaker at Astraea and she knew that Shizuma carried a lot of guilt from that. With Nagisa's help, she had spent her last few months at Miator trying to apologize and make amends to those she wronged.
As bizarre of a turn that the conversation had taken, Chiyo couldn't help but feel touched. She never would have imagined that her clumsy confession would have led to her being accepted with open arms into her Onee's and her lover's lives instead of being shunned. Also, she had to admire the pair's honesty and the courage it took for Shizuma to open up to her. She was truly something Chiyo aspired to one day be, instead of the timid girl she was now. Wiping her eyes softly, she gave a warm smile and nodded.
"I understand. And yes, I would love to spend time with you two if you'll allow me," Fidgeting and looking away slightly, she switched back to Japanese for Nagisa's benefit. "And I'll think about the other thing. I've never… so…" Chiyo saw Shizuma give her ever alluring smile as she could feel the tension in the air dissipate and her friends relax.
"We can cross that bridge if we come to it. Besides, we have to start somewhere Chiyo-chan." Seeing Nagisa going back to her parfait and Shizuma to her tea, Chiyo felt compelled to finally dig into her own snack, though there was something that was bothering her. Deciding to satiate her curiosity she looked at Shizuma curiously.
"Forgive me, but I have to ask. How did you two come up with this idea anyway Shizuma-sama?" The smile on Shizuma's face grew to a Cheshire like grin as she saw Nagisa sink down and blush.
"Yes, how did you come up with this idea Na-gi-sa?" Chiyo's eyes widened as she heard Shizuma teasingly accenting each syllable of her Onee's name, hardly able to believe her innocent idol would think of such a wild thing.
"I, kind of asked Shizuma if anything transpired between herself, Kaori-chan, and Miyuki-san."
"And then when I said no, you proceeded to spin quite the little tale of what you thought we would have done. It seems our sweet, little, innocent Nagisa has quite the adventurous mind." Chiyo could only watch with amusement as Nagisa squirmed, red-faced and embarrassed. Feeling a bit mischievous and a little brave, she decided to take a small chance.
"I wouldn't be interrupting anything by staying the night would I?" Instantly Shizuma's face fell into a depressed pout as she turned her head and rested her chin against a raised hand, looking away and making Chiyo instantly regret her trying her hand at some humor. A moment later Shizuma spoke… in French.
"It's someone's time of the month and she doesn't like to be touched."
"Sh-Shizuma!" All at once, Nagisa went from shy to indignant as she began to berate her lover for revealing such personal information. Shizuma just grinned at Chiyo and winked knowingly before trying to smooth things over with her other half. Chiyo merely shook her head trying her hardest not to laugh at the once again bickering couple before starting on her parfait, content with being accepted into this new little world and happy with the fact she knew she'd rarely be bored.
After finishing their snacks and tea, the trio spent the next few hours wandering the area looking through various shops, Nagisa having finally forgiven Shizuma after being bribed with the assurance of her favorite cheesecake later.
Chiyo had to admit she was feeling a bit tired as she sat on a bench, waiting for Nagisa to come out of a pastry shop with her promised cheesecake. Letting out a small sigh, she heard a small chuckle from Shizuma who sat beside her.
"Tired are we?" Chiyo gave a small nod and stretched her legs out, trying to relax them a little bit.
"Yes, I was up late doing student council paperwork. We have the spring festival coming up and Miator is handling the preparations." Chiyo could see Shizuma's gaze harden a bit.
"Is Nagisa pulling her weight? She's not making you and Suzumi-san do all the work is she?" Chiyo shook her head quickly and looked at her senpai.
"No, I usually spend my Friday nights on work and just nap after school and our Saturday Student Council meeting." Shizuma eyed her for a moment, then nodded and lightly patted Chiyo's back.
"Alright then, if she ever starts slacking though, tell me. I know you care about her, but she still needs to learn to stand on her own." Chiyo saw a gentle smile of encouragement cross Shizuma's lips. "Still, I'm happy that she has such a dependable aid backing her." The words warmed Chiyo's heart, and she couldn't help but feel some pride as she was complimented by the former Étoile who no doubt understood the mountains of documents that needed to be reviewed and signed.
"We have just one more stop to make, then we'll head to the cottage." Chiyo nodded and got to her feet as they both saw Nagisa exiting the pastry shop with a box in tow, and large smile on her face.
"Thank you, Shizuma." As Nagisa handed back the change to Shizuma, Chiyo couldn't help but notice the small wince on the older woman's face. Neither could her Onee it seemed, as she gave a worried look to her lover who merely shook her head and pocketed the funds.
Chiyo had a small idea as to what the truth behind the exchange was. Sadly, shortly after Shizuma had graduated from Miator, the world the former Étoile knew shattered around her. Her parents had found out about her relationship with Nagisa and had disowned her, cutting her off completely.
While Chiyo didn't know all the details, she had heard from the gossip that proliferated on the hill that Shizuma had gotten a job. And from Nagisa, she knew that she still retained the seaside cottage by some means. Though Chiyo had never pried into such personal matters, she could easily imagine money must have been tight.
"Let's go, we need to stop by the Crown, then we'll head home." Shizuma started walking as Nagisa followed behind, looking a bit downcast herself as far as Chiyo could tell. Hoping to distract her Onee a little, the young girl piped up.
"Onee-chan, what's the Crown?" The redhead looked at her, shifting the large box a bit as both continued to follow Shizuma.
"It's Shizuma's grandfather's shop, she actually works there."
Well that at least confirms Shizuma is working, though if her family has disowned her, then why would her grandfather help her with a job then? Chiyo mulled over the new information, trying to connect the dots in her head when her Onee's voice broke through, causing her to notice the small smile she was giving her.
"Don't worry, he's a very nice man." Chiyo nodded and gave a small smile of her own. It was funny how Nagisa could sometimes read her mind and put her at ease. Though she also felt relieved to know that Shizuma and Nagisa seemed to have at least one supporter.
Soon enough, the trio arrived at a shop that made Chiyo's eyes widen in amazement. It seems the "Crown" was short for The Dragon's Crown, a rather high-end looking jewelry shop. The window was decorated with the image of an ornate European dragon adorned with several rings and jewels, and a large crown sitting atop its head. The sign of the shop was written in Old English and overall the shop had a very western feel to it.
Inside however, Chiyo's amazement only grew. The shop looked like something out of a medieval fantasy. Lavish jewelry of every type was carefully laid out in several display cases, with the gems set in them polished lovingly to bring out as much of their natural luster as possible. The other thing she noticed was that there were no prices anywhere, quickly bringing to mind the phrase 'If you have to ask, you can't afford it'
Following her friends further inside, she heard Shizuma call out to someone, though as to whom was lost on her as her eyes came to rest on what to her was the most interesting sight in the store.
On the back wall, under another sign proudly informing the patron as to the name of the establishment, was a large sword. What drew Chiyo's attention though was the size of the weapon, from hilt to tip it looked roughly about 150cm, making it taller than her even.
She couldn't help but start to daydream about the kind of person who might be able to wield such a monstrous blade. Her mind filled with images of brave knights on horseback rescuing princesses from the clutches of dragons and evil wizards, much like in the books she loved to read. For a moment, she allowed herself to imagine the fantasy of wielding the sword herself in a gallant effort to save her beloved Onee from such dangers.
"Quite an interesting sight isn't it young lady?" The sudden sound of a deep male voice speaking in fluent English caused Chiyo to jump and quickly turn and attempt to bow, embarrassed for her daydreaming and no doubt staring off into nothingness.
"I'm very sorry!" Not paying attention to her surroundings due to her daydreaming, the imaginative young lady didn't realize she hadn't turned her body quite far enough and smacked the edge of her forehead against one of the display cases causing her to yelp and whimper as she clutched the injury and felt her eyes water slightly from the pain.
Why am I always so clumsy...? In an instant, Nagisa was by her side trying to see if she was injured, thankfully nothing but her pride seemed damaged.
"I apologize, I didn't mean to startle you miss, here." Hearing the same voice again except this time in Japanese, Chiyo looked up to see an older man kneeling down in front of her, extending a hand out to her. Accepting the help, she got to her feet and bowed her head apologetically.
"Thank you, I hope I didn't break anything." The man laughed gently and shook his head as he rapped on the display case with his knuckles.
"As impressive as that bow was, if that's all it took to break into these display cases, I'd be having a word with the manufacturer." He straightened himself up before giving a deep gentlemanly bow, speaking in English once again. "Durandal Darmail at your service."
"Ts-Tsukidate Chiyo, pleased to meet you Durandal-san" Chiyo returned the bow gently this time, though she couldn't help but feel a bit flustered considering the air of sophistication around him and his imposing figure. Despite his greying hair and full beard, he still looked very fit and strong, towering over her at what she could only guess was more than 180cm. Though the most striking aspect was that he was not Japanese, but a westerner of some type.
"Please call me Darmail, a friend of both my granddaughters is more than welcome to use my first name."
Both my granddaughters? Chiyo couldn't help but feel her curiosity pique despite the bump forming on her head. Nodding slightly, Chiyo smiled gently feeling at least a little more at ease.
"Thank you very much, please feel free to do the same with me." She saw him acknowledge her with a smile of his own before turning to her Onee.
"Nagisa-chan why don't you take Chiyo-san upstairs and get some ice for her forehead. Shizuma will you help me close up the shop in the meantime." Seeing Shizuma nod slightly and walk to the front door, she turned to her Onee who was already holding out her hand, which she took and allowed herself to be led upstairs, all the while her inquisitive mind mulling things over.
The apartment above the shop was rather plain compared to the impressive treasure trove that laid below. What did catch Chiyo's eye though was the rather large bookshelf that sat along one wall. Feeling her Onee's hand slip out of her own, she couldn't help but wander closer to the books, her eyes carefully scanning the shelves for any familiar titles.
"Here, put this on your forehead." Turning her head, she saw Nagisa holding out a wrapped icepack for her as she felt her cheeks flush slightly at being caught looking through another person's belongings, even if they were simply books on a shelf.
"Thank you Onee-chan," Placing it on the impact point, Chiyo winced as she felt the cool object touch her still sensitive forehead. "I'm sorry for making you worry."
"It's alright Chiyo-chan." She felt Nagisa's hand on her shoulder lightly leading her to the nearby couch. "Let's take a seat and wait for them."
As she sat down, Chiyo couldn't help but feel another wave of tiredness wash over her, long overdue for her Saturday nap. As comfy as she was sitting by her Onee, she didn't want to be rude and fall asleep in someone else's home, especially after such an embarrassing introduction. Looking towards the redhead, she decided to ask one of the two questions currently on her mind.
"Onee-chan, how are Darmail-san and Shizuma-sama related?" She heard Nagisa laugh gently as she leaned back on the couch.
"I was wondering when you'd ask that. They aren't related by blood and I'm not aware of all the details, but apparently he's been a close friend of the Hanazonos for several years." Chiyo watched intently as Nagisa's face darkened slightly, looking at the ring on her finger.
"When Shizuma's family disowned her because of our love, he was the only one to stand by her. He gave her a job here, and helped pay for whatever her scholarship didn't cover in regards for school. He lent her the money to buy a car and somehow was able to get the deed to the cottage so she wouldn't have to look for an apartment." Seeing her Onee look up to face her, she could clearly see the gratefulness in her eyes.
"I still don't know if I believe in God, but if he does exist, I thank him for sending Darmail-ojiisan into Shizuma and mine's life. He's been a beacon of light in a very dark time for us and even has accepted me as his granddaughter as well. He's someone you can trust my imouto, strict at times, but only because he cares about Shizuma and me."
Downstairs, Shizuma diligently wiped down the display cases as her grandfather audited the cash drawer and credit cards for the day, quietly reflecting on how she had come to find such work acceptable, if not a bit refreshing. If you had told the heiress, whom even the prime minister's son had eyes on a year ago, she'd be doing common work such as cleaning and customer service, she would have laughed at you for making such a joke or told you off for such an insult.
The sudden occlusion from her family had hurt her deeply. There had been no warning at all, just one day her credit cards had stopped working and upon calling her father to see why, she had been told she was no longer part of the family and to never bother them again.
Her father had told her he was not going to go through the foolishness the family had gone through with Kaori. And, that if she was not going to be a proper woman, then he had no reason to support her.
To be disowned and shunned merely because of whom she loved had devastated her. It wasn't about the money and losing her status that tore at her heart, it was the fact these were her own parents who were telling her this.
That, had only been the start of her troubles however. Her scholarship to the prestigious University of Tokyo had suddenly been revoked and she was now in danger of even losing her shelter. Penniless, about to be homeless, and an emotional wreck, the 'Great' Hanazono Shizuma had hit rock bottom… when a miracle occurred.
She had just spent the last of her pocket change at a street side café on a cup of tea to try and calm her nerves as she tried desperately to think of something or someone that could help her. She was honestly scared and sinking into a pit of despair fearing not only for her future, but of also losing Nagisa when her Grandfather, having been in town at a ball the night before, had found her sitting there.
He had taken her in and provided her with shelter, a job, and taught her how to survive on her own. Most of all however, he had accepted Nagisa with open arms, happy to have another granddaughter to call his own.
The transition was anything but easy. Darmail could be quite cross and stern with her when need be, but when she would stumble and fall he would pick her up and push her to keep going. If Nagisa and she were to have a future, then it would have to start here, with her clawing her way back from the brink to carve out a place for them to be happy.
Giving a small smile to herself as she sent up a silent prayer of thanks, Shizuma finished the section of cases she was on and stood up, stretching out her back before heading to the next set and walked past her Grandfather who, as he dropped the drawer into the register, was looking up at her.
"That's a rather large pastry box." Freezing on the spot, she turned and looked to the box with the cheesecake inside that was sitting on the counter by the register, mentally cursing herself as she felt her stomach drop, knowing the question behind his statement.
"I teased Nagisa about something I shouldn't have, something intimate." The older man sighed softly and shook his head. The last part had been added so that he would know not to inquire into the specifics. Shizuma's sex life was something the two had agreed not to discuss, though if a need arose, she knew he would always be willing to listen.
"Improper teasing aside, you can't keep apologizing with gifts. Not only can you not afford it, all it does is gloss over the underlying issue." Shizuma bit her lip slightly and merely looked away. A year ago she'd be yelling and arguing just for the sake of not backing down. However, she knew there was truth in his words, and she had long admitted this was a bad habit of hers. That, and she knew he was more than willing to stand toe to toe with her, fear and intimidation were not tactics that worked on the aged man before her.
"I just don't want to see her upset, I don't…" She felt a strong hand grasp her shoulder as he looked her in the eyes, his gaze gentle and compassionate.
"Nagisa is not going to leave you over some silly teasing. Just as I haven't abandoned you despite the rough year we've had." Ever since her family had disowned her, abandonment had become the young woman's greatest fear. She was terrified of losing either of the two remaining beacons of light in her life.
"I know, I just need to have more faith in her." She could see him smile as he pulled her into a gentle hug, patting her back.
"One day at a time, Shizuma. And I'll be here to remind you of how much she cares about you when those doubts arise." Letting out a small sigh of relief, she gave back a light smile, her confidence returning as she watched him pull away and take out his wallet, placing two 5,000 yen notes on the counter.
"I can't accept this. I still haven't given you the car payment for the month yet." She was always apprehensive of taking money from him as he had already done more than enough to support her. Plus, she honestly hated handouts.
"We can discuss that on Monday. Besides, I need you to run to the store and pick up a few things for dinner, you can keep whatever change is left." Shizuma just took the bills and nodded slightly, knowing it was pointless to argue and also thankful she wouldn't have to spend any more money tonight to feed Chiyo, Nagisa, and herself.
"I can do inventory later, we should get dinner started before it gets any later." Following Darmail, who had grabbed the cheesecake, upstairs, she was surprised to find Chiyo leaning against Nagisa with her eyes closed, seemingly napping. As her Grandfather headed into the kitchen, she walked over to the couch, unable to keep a smile from her lips.
"How is she?" Nagisa just smiled as Chiyo yawned and sat up, her bangs seemingly hiding the bruise that had no doubt formed on her forehead.
"I'm alright Shizuma-sama, just resting a little." Before Shizuma could even apologize for disturbing the exhausted girl, Darmail was back with a small list in hand.
"Ah, Chiyo-san, would you be willing to accompany Shizuma to the store? We need a few things for dinner and I'd rather not have her out by herself past dark. There's unfortunately been word of a groper in the area." Shizuma shot the man a look, clearly seeing through his excuse, which he met unwaveringly. Chiyo, for her part, simply smiled and nodded, getting to her feet.
"Sure, is Nagisa-oneechan coming as well?" Before Nagisa could even open her mouth to answer, Darmail was in control of the conversation again, no doubt laying the groundwork for some agenda, Shizuma could tell.
"I'd like her to stay and help me prepare a few things." Looking to her unsuspecting lover and seeing her just give a smile, Shizuma resigned herself from objecting.
"Alright, we'll be back shortly then. Ready Chiyo-chan?"
"Yes, Shizuma-sama." Grabbing her purse and keys, the two headed down the stairs and out the backdoor before taking the alley back to the main street as they started the short walk to the store.
As the two walked in silence, Shizuma made sure to keep a close eye on the young girl. She could easily see the lack of sleep starting to affect her. Her shoulders drooped slightly and her pace was slower than what it was earlier that day, but even still, she didn't whine or complain. Despite her age and size, there was a certain ruggedness that she could see in Chiyo, and it impressed her quite a bit. Still, every person has their limits and she could see Chiyo nearing hers.
"Why don't we sit down for a few minutes and I'll buy us a canned drink?" The young girl just looked at her with a thankful smile and nodded before walking over to a nearby bench and sitting down as Shizuma walked over to a nearby vending machine to get two cans of coffee before coming back.
"Here, I don't know if you like coffee, but it should help you keep alert for a little while longer." Holding the can out to her partner, she sat down beside her and opened her own can.
"I'm sorry you had to come with me, I realize how tired you must be." Shizuma watched Chiyo shudder slightly from the taste of the drink before the short-haired girl shook her head.
"It's alright Shizuma-sama. Someone has to come with you and, as nice as your Grandfather is, I'd feel awkward sleeping on his couch while you and Nagisa went out." Shizuma could understand that. While she knew Darmail was a gentleman in every sense of the word, she could also see how Chiyo might feel it rude to sleep on a stranger's couch.
"Shizuma-sama, may I ask you something?" Eyeing the young girl who kept her gaze in her lap, Shizuma simply reached her hand over and lightly placed it on Chiyo's knee as a sign of encouragement.
"I don't mean to be ungrateful, but are you really sure about this idea? Aren't you worried that I might come between you and Nagisa?" The 'idea' in question was of course in regards to the discussion that had taken place earlier that day at the café. Shizuma could sense the genuine concern in Chiyo's voice, and it simply caused a smile to play on her lips.
"Kohai, to be honest with you, I'm still not sure about this myself." That caused the young girl to look up at her curiously. "It's myself I'm more worried about than you or Nagisa. I've had many an imouto I've taken advantage of in order to fill the void that Kaori left. There is a good reason some call me the Succubus of Miator after all, and old habits tend to die hard."
"Shizuma-sama..." The voice wasn't judgmental but reassuring, as the proud, strong pillar of a woman let her defenses down somewhat and explained her own worries.
"It's funny, back on the hill there were countless girls who would jump at this chance. Anything for a night with their silver-haired goddess." Shizuma could see Chiyo shrink back a bit, no doubt feeling like maybe she insulted her with her hesitation. Shizuma, however, would have none of it, and gently cupped Chiyo's chin and turned her head so she could look her in the eyes. Long ago, she had learned the importance of what a simple touch and eye contact could do, and for once, she was going to use those skills to do some good.
"You, however, are different. There is a maturity I can see in you beyond your years Chiyo-chan. The fact that we are having this conversation is proof of that. You've put other's needs and wants far above your own. And, I do agree with Nagisa, you deserve some happiness for once. Whether it's just being by her side, or something more." Unlike the teasing gaze from earlier at the café, the look in Shizuma's eyes conveyed respect, admiration, and hope. She wanted to soothe the worry and fears that laid in the young maiden's heart.
"I realize that of the three of us, you are the one in the most awkward position, which is why I've tried to be so blunt with you. I want you to make the decision you feel is right for you. I don't want you to have any regrets," She could already see the tears welling up in Chiyo's eyes as she saw her fears begin to leave her. "And no matter what, I'd like to become your friend. You've done so much for me already. I'm more thankful than you can realize."
"Shizuma-sama... I..." Shizuma just shook her head and set down her coffee before pulling the young girl into a hug. She could feel her curl against her slightly, and Shizuma just held her gently in response. She knew exhaustion was playing a major part in Chiyo's emotions right now and perhaps her methods may have been a bit too intense. But, she was sure they both needed to have this conversation to clear the air between them.
"Thank you, Shizuma-sama." Letting Chiyo go as she felt her pull away, she could see a sparkle in the young girl's eyes, one that showed confidence and determination. "I won't doubt the sincerity of your heart any longer, and I promise I won't let you fall back into the same trap you used to. If you can be so straightforward with me, then I have an obligation do the same with you."
These words certainly brought some peace to Shizuma's own soul. At the very least, she hoped she could count on Chiyo's honesty to keep her in check should things get out of hand.
"I would appreciate it, Nagisa already has enough trouble keeping me in line." A quick flash of her famous mischievous smile showed the comment was in jest and elicited a small giggle from Chiyo. Picking up her coffee again, she saw her junior quietly sip her own for a moment before speaking again.
"Shizuma-sama, one more thing if I may?" Looking out of the corner of her eye, she could see Chiyo turn to look at her. "I don't know if you need it, but I did bring a little money with me. If I can help cover anything, let me know, please." Shizuma knew she meant well, but the day she started taking a middle school student's allowance to pay her bills was the day she was really in trouble.
"Thank you, but I assure you I've got everything covered. Darmail-ojiisan pays me very well." Seeing Chiyo nod and drop the subject, Shizuma couldn't help but feel a stab of guilt about the half-truth after just being so honest with her over something much more serious a moment ago, but this was her own problem to deal with.
Besides he does pay me well, too well in fact. It's just the bills and my bad habits don't always leave a lot left. Seeing Chiyo finish her drink, she downed the rest of her own and stood.
"Ready to go? If we take too much longer, they'll probably think something happened to us."
"Yes, I'm feeling better. Thank you for the coffee Shizuma-sama." She did look a bit more energetic, though sleep would be the only thing that would truly recharge her, Shizuma knew.
"It's the least I could do for putting up with me today. Now, let's get those groceries so we can have dinner and take you to our home so you can finally get some sleep." Walking side by side with Chiyo, she couldn't help but let her mind wander to another problem she could see brewing. She knew the look in her Grandfather's eyes all too well when he had asked Nagisa to stay behind and what it meant.
I just hope he doesn't scold her too badly. If only I wasn't so soft on her...
"I've finished setting the table, Grandfather." Nagisa smiled to herself as she called out to Darmail in English, placing the last fork on the table and reviewing the placement of everything.
Napkin, fork, bread plate and butter knife on the left. Table knife, spoon, and water glass on the right. Table knife blades are all facing the plate... I think I'm finally getting the hang of this!
Stepping aside, just as Darmail came over from the kitchen cleaning his hands with a dish towel, the confident young lady waited with bated breath as her tutor judged her placement. Seeing him quietly eyeball her work only to retrieve a ruler from his desk and begin measuring, only made her nervous; however, she had faith in her practiced skills.
"Very good Nagisa-chan. However, your placement is still a bit uneven, and you're too far from the end of the table. Remember, two and a half centimeters from the edge." She couldn't help but let out a small disappointed sigh. Darmail was a tough tutor; however, it was only because he meant well.
Coming from a middle class family, Nagisa had little experience with silverware, a proper table setting, or etiquette, something the Sisters and her teachers had scolded her for on more than one occasion, especially when practice formal dinners were held for events on the hill.
Upon learning of her troubles, Darmail had offered to tutor her in the finer ways of high society, even going as far as to give her a spare set of basic tableware to practice with in her room. While she may never have to set a table, she still had to know what utensil was used for what and the easiest way to do that, according to him, was to learn where everything went.
He had also taken to helping her with her English, mandating in his house that she speak only in it, save for when she didn't know the proper word or phrase of course. It had worked. And, while her English was never bad, it was getting to the point where she was able to think in the foreign tongue. She was already near the top of her class in the subject, and if she kept up her work at it, Darmail had promised to pay for her to take an English fluency exam. Something, he said that would help her greatly in whatever job she decided to take.
He was strict in her tutoring and often pushed her hard. However, he also knew when to pull back and reassure her. He often told her he was hard on her because he could see how bright she was. Honestly, she didn't feel all that smart, but she would still give her best. She owed him that much after how much he had done for Shizuma and her.
"Now, now, you've come quite a long way from the nervous girl who could barely cut through a steak." Even the reassuring pat on the head couldn't help the rather embarrassing memories from resurfacing. There had been more than one instance where poor knife work had led to knocking over a glass or sending food off the plate. Now, however, she could even raise a glass in a proper toast… most of the time.
"I've already prepped everything, now all we have to do is wait for them to return." Seeing him look at the clock, she watched him nod before speaking again. "Why don't you join me on the terrace so we can have a talk?"
Those words made Nagisa's stomach knot up as she felt a wave of anxiety wash over her. When Darmail wanted to 'talk' it generally meant a reproach was coming. Still, having no way out, she dutifully followed him outside, taking a seat.
"Nagisa-chan, I've known you now for well over a year and in that time I've seen just how much you mean to Shizuma, and the power you wield over her, even if you don't realize it yourself." Noting the switch back to Japanese, Nagisa allowed herself to ponder the meaning of his words. Could she really hold any sway over such a strong woman?
"I've noticed a rather disturbing trend in your relationship. And, while I've spoken with Shizuma about it, it seems to have done little good which is why I'm now coming to you." Now more curious than worried, Nagisa looked up to see Darmail staring off into the distance, a solemn look on his face.
"Shizuma comes from a lifestyle where she is used to having nice things no matter the cost. High quality teas, fine wine, designer clothes, banquets and parties that could cost as much as your parent's annual income. They were readily available and easily obtained by her." It was true Shizuma had come from a wealthy family, but she had never flaunted that fact or wore flashy clothes. As if answering the unasked question lingering in her mind, he continued.
"While she's never been the kind of girl who had a closet full of shoes, or a new dress for every occasion, she still has her vices. Tea, for one. Try as I might, she refuses to buy anything but a particular blend that's rather expensive." Nagisa had actually wondered about that fact before. The tea in their home was so much more flavorful compared to even the tea that was served regularly at Miator. Shizuma was rather tight lipped about where she got it, merely saying she had connections when asked.
"Then, there's her makeup. Granted, I wholeheartedly understand the need to maintain one's appearance. Especially, in a sales position such as ours. As such, I help her cover the cost." That, Nagisa did know about, one look at the chest where Shizuma kept her cosmetics had stunned the young girl. There were brands and names she couldn't even come close to pronouncing. To be honest, it actually made her feel a bit plain, like she should be doing more for her own looks even though when she had asked, she predictably had been told she was fine just as she was.
"While she doesn't go clothes shopping often, when she does, she often buys from more upscale shops, regularly buying dresses than can cost 10,000 yen or more simply because she doesn't feel comfortable going into lower quality shops." Nagisa's mind reeled at the revelation of Shizuma's clothing budget. 10,000 yen could buy her panties, socks, and even a few outfits. To spend such an amount on one article of clothing was unheard of in her household save for a special occasion perhaps.
"However, Nagisa, Shizuma's biggest vice, where her most frivolous spending comes from, is you." The redhead shrunk down in her seat, lowering her head. She had a feeling a revelation like this was coming. So far, the things that were named were for the most part necessities, and while Shizuma did have some things she bought solely for herself, it wasn't very often she did, it seemed.
"The weekly dinners and dates add up my dear. Not to mention, whenever you two have a disagreement, Shizuma makes amends with a gift of some sort." She could hear a deep sigh come from the older man and a tiredness in his voice that was normally not present.
"Sadly, it's a habit she got from her father. I can't tell you how many times her father has bought jewelry from me as an apology for her mother, and I'm sure most of it lays in a drawer somewhere forgotten. Nagisa could feel her eyes watering as a familiar dark cloud descended over her heart and soul. She had doubts and worries over Shizuma's gifts, but caught up in the moment, she never protested or thought about it.
I'm so stupid… Why can't I ever see what's right in front of me…
"I never thought…" Unable to lift her head as the horrible realization of what she was doing to the person dearest to her dawned upon her, she felt a gentle hand on her shoulder. Once again, she never raised her voice or questioned things when something felt wrong, instead she buried her head in the clouds and pretended everything was fine, always assuming Shizuma would come to her if she needed help.
"Nagisa-chan, how can you be privy to a problem that never makes itself known? God only knows how many times I've urged Shizuma to allow you to help with the budget. She claims she doesn't want to burden you with it, but I know it's her pride that's keeping her from being open regarding the matter. She feels she should be able to provide for you on her own." Nagisa could hear the words and understood them, but she knew he was wrong. There were signs, just like the look Shizuma had given her after she bought that stupid cheesecake earlier, and what of the gifts? How much did the lingerie that Chiyo had seen her in cost? 10,000 yen like her dresses? Maybe more? She felt almost sick thinking about how much money had been wasted on her.
"Besides, as cliché as it sounds, I was young once. Until you actually earn money of your own and have responsibilities, you don't understand the true value of it." He was spot-on. Whenever Shizuma offered to buy her something or gave her a gift, she never even thought twice about the burden it must have put on her. And the most she'd contribute? A measly tip here and there or a small snack for them. The tears started to fall as more and more evidence of her selfishness came forward and the ultimate revelation hit her.
"I'm a horrible fiancée..."
"Now I'll have none of that, young lady. Self-pity never solved any problems." Darmail's voice was sharp, and his tone serious, but like a bolt of lightning illuminating the night, she felt her mind clear. He was right, this wasn't the time to beat herself up. Looking up, she could see that while his face was stern, the same kind and gentle eyes were looking back at her.
"Beating yourself up isn't going to help Shizuma or your relationship. If there's something you don't like, work to change it. Be it yourself, or something in your life." Nodding, Nagisa wiped her eyes and took a deep breath to calm herself. Darmail always knew how to pull her out of her catastrophizing something.
"What do I do though? I'm always afraid of saying the wrong thing and making her angry. I don't want her to leave me." Nagisa, sadly, was never one to speak her mind freely, preferring to shove her fears and insecurities deep inside until either she blew up, or had them dragged out of her by someone, usually Chiyo.
"Sometimes, Nagisa-chan, we have no choice but to risk that. Try as you might, there will be times where provoking an argument by confronting someone is the only option to get things out in the open. There is conflict in any marriage granddaughter, what matters is how you resolve it."
It was far from the answer she wanted, but he was right. If she wanted to talk with Shizuma about this, she'd have to press the issue. It was time to stop pretending things were ok and take action.
"I understand. I need to stop being so afraid of making a mistake and do something. I hurt Tamao-chan because of my indecisiveness and I could have lost Chiyo-chan as well. I can't let the same thing happen to Shizuma and me." She smiled at him, feeling her resolve return. Getting to her feet, she gave her adoptive grandfather a hug in genuine thanks.
"Thank you for putting up with me and my troubles." Hearing a soft chuckle and feeling a gentle pat on the back, Nagisa could easily tell he was far from bothered.
"One cannot always see what isn't shown to them. Now that you know what the problem is, you have the responsibility to address it. Though, I do have a question." Pulling away and standing before the wise man in front of her, she could see the puzzled look on his face. "You mentioned almost losing Chiyo-chan. What did you mean by that?"
Panic set in again, though this time for an entirely different reason. As understanding as Darmail was, he was still very old fashioned and Nagisa was sure news of inviting her Imouto into their bedroom, let alone their lives, would not go over well.
"Forgive me, but it's kind of a personal issue." She could see him study her for a moment, as she could only hope she wasn't blushing. After a moment though, he closed his eyes before nodding, signaling she was in the clear.
"I understand, though if you do want to talk about it later, you know I will always listen." Feeling relieved that he wasn't prying any further, Nagisa felt her heartbeat slow down and she was sure a sigh escaped her lips.
"We should head inside, they'll be back shortly I'm sure." Seeing him turn and head inside, she followed in his footsteps, determined to talk to Shizuma at the earliest chance before her courage faltered.
She didn't have to wait long though. As shortly thereafter, the familiar sound of Shizuma's voice rang up through the stairway to announce that she and Chiyo were back.
"Sorry for taking so long Onee-chan, we stopped for a quick can of coffee." Nagisa couldn't help but smile at Chiyo's apology. It was always like her to explain and take responsibility for such simple things. It was simply just another aspect of her thoughtfulness, she had to assume.
Turning to address Shizuma, she found herself under a questioning gaze. One, she returned with an unwavering stare of her own. She could already feel the tension building between the two of them. It wasn't often they challenged each other like this, but the difference this time was Nagisa was calm, and not about to explode into and angry, crying mess like she usually would before or during these confrontations.
"Chiyo-san, why don't we go downstairs for a moment, I have something I'd like to show you." Hearing Darmail's voice break the silence, Nagisa looked at her imouto who was giving her a concerned look.
She's probably never seen me this serious before, but I have to do this…
Giving a small smile and making a light waving motion with her hand, she watched her worried friend disappear downstairs with her grandfather, who shut the door of the apartment behind him. Looking back to her lover, she could actually sense some nervousness in the normally confident woman. The advantage seemed to be hers, for the moment.
"Nagisa, wh… "She quickly held up a hand to quiet Shizuma, knowing she had to take control of this conversation from the start if she was going to accomplish anything. Shizuma loved to be in control and there was little she hated more than a lack of dominance.
"First off, I want to apologize for being as thoughtless as I have been regarding our finances. I haven't been thinking about how much our dates and evenings out have been costing, just like with the cheesecake today." Even from across the room she could see Shizuma tense slightly despite her beloved's best efforts to remain stoic.
"Its fine Nagisa, It's not…" Seeing her girlfriend wave off her comment only caused the teenager to feel a twinge of anger.
"Secondly, "The sudden interruption had touched a nerve as she could see a flash of irritation cross Shizuma's face. The normally cool façade was cracking due to the fact she was openly defying her now.
I have to be careful unless I want this to turn into a shouting match
"I want to help you with budgeting our expenses so I better understand them." Shizuma's response was to merely turn on her heel to walk away, trying to regain control of the situation by ending it.
"It's not your problem Nagisa."
"You're right, it's ourproblem Shizuma." She could feel the irritation seeping into her own voice.
"You have your studies to worry about."
"My grades are fine, including French thank you, and you know it." She was trying to keep her anger in check, but it was getting harder and harder the more Shizuma made excuses. While the two had their minor disagreements and teasing like any couple, when the two really fought, it was like two fortresses bombarding each other, escalating until finally one crumbled and that was usually Nagisa.
Not this time, Darmail-ojiisan is right. We have to talk about this. Stay calm and in control.
"Why are you suddenly so interested in my finances? What did Darmail tell you?" There she went again, excluding her. Resisting the urge to snap as Shizuma turned back to face her, she locked her eyes with her lover's as she steeled herself and pressed her attack.
"Just the fact you apparently spend a ridiculous amount of money on clothes just to keep up appearances. And don't tell me it's for work, I already know Ojiisan buys your work clothes for you." She knew her words could have been chosen better, but the message got through as she could see Shizuma flinch and chew on her bottom lip slightly in annoyance.
"How much did you spend on the black lace lingerie that Chiyo saw me in?" Despite her best efforts to hide it, Nagisa could see the fear flash through Shizuma's eyes for a brief instant before it suddenly turned into an icy glare.
Not this time love.
Nagisa kept her eyes locked, continuing to challenge the silver-haired pillar before her. There was a time when she could have found herself lost in that stare, either enthralled or scared into submission. But, the now seventeen year old teenager had learned how to read those eyes. She knew when to give in and when to resist, and right now her heart was telling her to hold her ground.
Moments passed as the two stubbornly refused to budge. Finally though, she could see Shizuma's stare waver just slightly, as she nervously grasped the engagement ring on her finger.
"7,000"
"Shizuma!"
"Would you rather I buy you trash to wear?!" Nagisa recoiled at the ferocity of the yell. She hadn't meant to shout herself, but even being prepared for such an answer hadn't stopped the shock of actually hearing it. Darmail and Chiyo had definitely heard that. Lowering her head and resisting the urge to go over and comfort her lover, she took a breath to steady herself and calm her racing heart.
"Shizuma... it's not that I don't like the things you do for me but..." The teen paused, trying to choose her words carefully as she raised her head to see Shizuma looking to the side, one hand crossing her body to hold the other arm close to her side.
"I'm not going to be upset with you or think you don't love me if a gift isn't expensive or we can't go somewhere nice. And, I'm not going to fall apart from sharing responsibility in our household. I'm not a pane of glass." Biting her tongue, she held back from vocalizing the second half of that last statement.
I'm not Kaori-chan...
Nagisa had nothing at all against Shizuma's former lover and the girl who had indeed captured Astraea's hearts before she arrived there, but there were times Nagisa couldn't help but feel as if Shizuma treated her like she treated Kaori, protecting her from anything she deemed too harmful or stressful.
"Alright, we'll sit down tomorrow and look over everything." The response was quiet, but audible. It was always hard for Shizuma to admit defeat in anything, and Nagisa could clearly hear the words being forced out. The frustration in her voice was gone only to be replaced by trembling that easily told the redhead her love was close to breaking.
Knowing nothing more needed to be said, Nagisa started towards Shizuma ready to embrace her only to have the older girl turn away and shake her head. Speaking in the same shaky voice.
"Not now..." For a moment Nagisa felt her heart fall, though just as quickly, she put a gentle smile on her face and nodded.
"I understand, when you're ready then. I'll go start on dinner." She turned and walked into the kitchen glancing over her shoulder to see Shizuma walk out onto the terrace, quietly closing the door behind her.
As she started to unbag the groceries and prep the new ingredients, she couldn't help but reflect on Shizuma's current state. It wasn't the first time her attempts to comfort her after a fight were rebuffed, and she knew it wouldn't be the last.
Nagisa didn't take offense to it, but it did sadden her. When she was hurting, she wanted someone to hold her and tell her things would be okay. Shizuma, meanwhile, was the opposite. Whenever fissures started to develop in Shizuma's otherwise playful and confident demeanor and she could see a glimpse of the pained soul underneath, she would sequester herself away until she had collected herself and reaffirmed her defenses. It was certainly a lonely way to cope, but it fit Shizuma at the same time. Dumped into Miator since kindergarten and expected to be the best at everything, did she ever really have anyone to comfort her, or did she basically raise herself to just show no weakness?
Quietly, she busied herself with preparing the steaks that Shizuma and Chiyo had bought to be seared, not paying much mind to the passage of time until she felt two strong arms wrap around her form from behind and the feeling of someone's face burying itself into her hair.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you like that." She smiled and gently nuzzled back against Shizuma, unable to return the embrace due to her hands being covered in a mixture of oil, salt, and spices.
"I forgive you, and I'm sorry for being so pushy." A gentle kiss to her cheek was all she needed to know that all was well.
"I bet you could even make the trashiest of trash look amazing." Nagisa couldn't help but laugh at Shizuma's compliment as she felt her holding her a little closer. A smile crossed her lips as an image entered her mind.
"I guess that makes me the most womanly of women then." Hearing Shizuma giggle softly and kiss her, she felt her spirits raise. Though, the image of her trying to elegantly wear some skimpy outfit was still stuck in her head. She had to wonder what...
"Oh God! We forgot about Chiyo-chan and Darmail-ojiisan!" They were still downstairs waiting for them to finish talking. How long had they been waiting by now?
"Hmm... They can wait a little longer can't they?"
"Shizuma..." She only hoped they didn't think the two were doing anything perverted.
"Alright, alright. They're probably hungry anyway." After stealing one last kiss, she felt Shizuma slip away as she shook her head in amusement before going back to her prep work.
As Chiyo walked down the stairs into the jewelry shop, she couldn't help but feel worried. There was a fire in her Onee's eyes she rarely saw. While Nagisa was normally very cheery and avoided conflict, trying to always smooth things over, when she truly felt passionate about something little would stop her. She just hoped Nagisa didn't push too hard as Shizuma was a powerful force to provoke.
Reaching the bottom of the stairs, she stopped, feeling a little out of place as she waited for Darmail to show her whatever it was he was going to. She could easily tell it was a ploy to give her Onee and Shizuma a few moments alone, but for what still worried her mind.
Seeing the large man walk past her and behind the counter, she noticed a pair of heavy leather gloves in one of his hands. Curiosity getting the better of her, she watched him don the protective wear before pulling out a large cloth and lying it across the counter space.
"You seemed so interested in my sword earlier, I figured I'd let you take a look at it up close." Chiyo could hardly believe it. It was true she was fascinated by the blade, but she never thought she'd actually be able to see it up close. Watching him remove it from its mount, the imaginative young girl could already see the fantasies from earlier in the day come back to her.
"Here you are, she's quite a beauty isn't she?" Chiyo was sure she must have been glowing as her eyes studied the treasure laid out before her. Then came the icing on the cake. He was actually holding the gloves out to her!
"Is it really ok?" Getting a gentle nod and a smile as her response, she eagerly took the gloves and slipped them on. They were far too large for her small hands, but they would do. She knew from her father that handling a blade barehanded was horrible for the metal due to oil and sweat, and there was always the danger of accidently cutting oneself.
Slowly, she ran her fingers across the broadside of the blade carefully inspecting the craftsmanship and quality when she suddenly noticed something.
"This part, it's not sharp... a ri... ric..." Chiyo scoured her brain for the proper term as it was right on the tip of her tongue.
"A ricasso, that's very astute of you Chiyo-san." The older man's face showed he was honestly impressed with her observation as he walked down the counter a little ways to retrieve something. "Now can you tell me why this blade has a ricasso?"
Chiyo quietly furrowed her brow and thought about the question. What would the practical use of an unsharpened section of sword be? If it was close to the hilt she might think it was an aesthetic choice or to save time, but this was nearly a quarter up the blade. There was one thing she could think of and it had to do with the gloves on her hands.
"Leverage?" Darmail's smile widened as he came back holding an aluminum baseball bat which she assumed he must have kept for chasing off would be thieves and troublemakers.
"Very good! Indeed wielding such a large blade would be very tiring and difficult." She watched him grip the bat like a sword and slowly 'swing' to illustrate his point.
"However, if I can grip the blade safely with a gloved hand," She watched him grab near the middle of the bat and swing again this time moving his body into the blow as if pushing an opponent away. "I can put more control into my attack and thrust much easier."
Watching him move, Chiyo could tell Darmail knew how to fight. There was something odd about it though, his movements, while correct, lacked elegance. There was none of the usual grace of someone who had practiced the sword, instead it was full of ferocity, meant for combat rather than show, almost like her father.
"You seem to know quite a bit about swords Chiyo-san. Might I assume you practice Kendo?" That indeed would be the most common and logical explanation, but in this case not entirely correct.
"My family practices Kenjutsu, specifically Nitoujutsu." Chiyo saw the elder man's eyes widen in surprise, before nodding softly. Very few schools these days taught Kenjutsu, or The Method of the Sword. Chiyo's family had stubbornly held onto the old way though, despite their school just barely surviving year to year.
The particular style her family specialized in was a two-sword style using a katana and a wakizashi, much like the famed Miyamoto Musashi. Chiyo though, could barely hold her own with just a training sword. She was nowhere near her father or brother's skill.
"I hate it..." hanging her head, she let out a quiet sigh. "The way my father trains me makes me feel like I'm being taught how to kill someone."
"That would be an accurate assumption to a degree Chiyo-san." Looking up in surprise, she could see the aged man lightly stroking his beard in thought. "As loathe as some may be willing to admit, any marital discipline has the ability to injure or kill. I'd be willing to bet your father is trying to imbue that fact into you and I'd say he's succeeded."
That was probably true. However, Chiyo just didn't like the idea of harming someone else. That, combined with her inability to focus, often led to being on the receiving end of many a training bruise from sparring with her father.
"You do seem to know your swords though, any particular reason you're so enthusiastic about them?" Chiyo could feel her cheeks flush a little as she kept her head down.
"I've read about them before. I really like books." When Chiyo would find something new in one of the many books she read, she'd make a note about it and scour the library for information on the subject. As such, she'd become a wellspring of rather useless knowledge in her own opinion.
"There's nothing wrong with that my dear. If anything, it just means that whatever you end up doing with your life, you'll be suitably prepared." Before Chiyo could do more than let the words sink in, they could hear yelling from upstairs, with one voice coming through clearly.
"Would you rather I buy you trash to wear?!" Turning her head upwards, Chiyo fought the urge to run upstairs and intervene in whatever argument was going on. The firm hand on her shoulder only helped to keep her glued to the floor as the voices went quiet again.
"They're alright Chiyo-san. Sometimes an argument is the only way to clear the air and talk about things that need to be discussed." Hearing him give a small sigh, she saw him walk back behind the counter to retrieve some supplies.
"Looks like we'll be down here a little while longer. Might as well give this thing a good polishing. Would you mind helping me?" Chiyo forced a small smile and nodded, walking behind the counter to assist. At the very least, this would help pass time, though she could only pray things were indeed alright between her Onee and Shizuma.

Author's Notes
Happy New Year! …and it only took almost a year to get this out.
I honestly didn't expect getting this chapter out to take so long, nor for the chapter to be as massive as it is. However, I really wanted to set up the premise for Chiyo's story as well as introduce Darmail and explain a little of what happened in the year since Shizuma had left Astraea. As such, this ran a little long, but I hope it was entertaining.
To be honest though, the chapter was written in about three months. It's been the editing and inputting the corrections from the beta versions of this chapter that's taken so long. I had hoped to get this done and edited by the start of fall semester but that sadly fell through and then my studies, namely Japanese 1, ate up quite a bit of my time.
Still, there is no excuse for the delay and I am deeply sorry. At the same time, I'm very grateful for everyone who patiently waited for this chapter. Speaking of which, let me close this out with a few notes:
I'm not really sure if Shizuma addressing Chiyo with no honorific during the café scene can even work as I mentioned. But hopefully you got the idea that Shizuma was indeed trying to dispel the illusion that she is the great woman that needs to be respected, and really just talk with Chiyo on a more intimate and heart-to-heart level. Similarly Darmail's lack of honorific while speaking with Nagisa alone is more so she can get used to the idea of foreigners not always using an honorific. Instead he reserves the "chan" suffix for more affectionate moments when they are alone. Think of it as a verbal hug if you will.
I decided to go with metric units of measurement as that's what Chiyo and the others would be thinking in. Granted, it does mean I'll need to provide notes on what each measurement is. Additionally, my original plan was to refrain from using too much Japanese as I really didn't have a good understanding of the language and just thought I would be trying to sound fancy. However now that I've taken Japanese 1… I'm still going to stick by this rule. The reason being, while I may know the actual meaning of words, that doesn't mean they translate directly to English, plus this is my native language. However, there will be a few phrases that will pop up here and there and when they are introduced I'll make sure to explain them in the notes section as thoroughly as I can.
Also, there was quite a bit of research that went into this chapter from how a table setting is actually supposed to be, to even the type of sword Darmail has and Chiyo's family's martial arts background. I've tried to be as accurate as I can, but if I'm off on something feel free to let me know.
Shizuma's nickname The Succubus of Miator comes from the fact that when I was first watching the anime, I kept getting the feel that Shizuma's stare was otherworldly, and often joked with a friend she was either a Succubus or had Geass powers. I decided to draw from that as well as the fact that Shizuma certainly has fooled around quite a bit from what the novels and the anime implies, being described as a serial heart breaker a few times. I can see her detractors giving her such a name because of her actions. Also, Nagisa's comment about not being sure if she believes in God is a reference to the novels.
The title and Shizuma's "Trashiest of Trash" comments are actually both references to Kamen Rider. The title references Kamen Rider OOO (pronounced O's or Oozu) as its episodes titles always had three things in them. The second, is in reference to the first episode of Kamen Rider Fourze, in which the main character, Gentaro, is called Trashiest of Trash by another character. And, not knowing what the English word Trash, means guesses that it means he's the manliest of men.
I pray the next update comes a bit quicker. But, with spring semester starting in just a few weeks, it may take a month or two. However, once the next chapter is written, I'll be taking a little break to write the next arc of the story so that I can have some regular updates and give myself a buffer. Next time however, our trio of girls head home to Shizuma's cottage so Chiyo can finally get some sleep.
Lastly, special thanks of course to DrYuriMom, nananutbread86, and makemesmile98 for the kind words and feedback and of course my beta reader "Steve". I hope this chapter is to your liking and that you'll continue to enjoy this little tale I'm crafting.
Until next time!
