The Lorelais' First Day at Chilton

Lorelai, Luke and Rory were all stood outside the Gilmore Mansion staring at the door.

"So anyone going to ring the doorbell?" Rory asked.

"Not yet." Lorelai said. She felt Luke take her hand and give it a squeeze. She looked at him and he smiled encouragingly. She sighed and leant forward to ring the doorbell.

Emily opened. "You're here!" She said.

"I said we would be." Lorelai forced a smile.

"Yes well...I never know with you." She said. She then smiled at Rory. "It's so good to see you Rory. Your grandfather is in the living room. We can't wait to hear about Chilton." She gushed, putting her arm round her and leading her away, not even acknowledging Luke.

"Take a breath." Luke said quietly.

Lorelai let out a big breath. "I knew she'd be like this. She only wants Rory here."

"Come on. We should go through." He said. "Rory will want us there."

Lorelai nodded and followed Luke to the living room.

"Lorelai your daughter's tall!" Richard said as she came in.

"Yeh it's freakish." Lorelai joked.

"I was starting to wonder if you'd gone home you took so long to get in here." Emily smiled sweetly.

"Yeh well you left us in there." Lorelai said sarcastically.

"Us?" Richard questioned. He then noticed Luke. "Oh Luke, I didn't notice you there." He said.

"Yeh because Luke's so unnoticeable." Lorelai said sarcastically.

"Mr Gilmore, it's nice to see you again." Luke said holding out his hand.

"Yes." Richard said shaking his hand. "And it's Richard. You are family now, after all." He said.

Luke glanced at Emily who was hiding her emotions well. He took a breath and held out her hand. "It's good to see you again, Mrs Gilmore."

"Yes of course. Hello Luke." She said politely.

They all sat awkwardly in the living room for a moment, Richard sharing his paper with Rory. The maid then came in and announced that dinner was ready so they went through to the dining room. Luke and Lorelai sat on one side while Rory sat on the other.

"So are you excited about Chilton?" Emily asked Rory.

"Yeh. I'm going to miss my old school though." She said.

"Really? But Chilton is a great respected school." Emily said.

"Yeh but Lane goes to my old school. I'll miss hanging with her." Rory said.

"Speaking of which, I spoke to Christopher earlier this week." Richard said.

Lorelai's head shot up. "How is that a speaking of which?"

"He's started a business and it's doing very well. Talented man, your father." Richard said.

"She knows." Lorelai said.

"You must take after him." Richard said.

"Speaking of which, I'm going to get a fork. Or a knife." Lorelai said getting up and disappearing into the kitchen.

Rory glanced at Luke, unsure what to do. Luke gave her a small smile and got up to follow her but Emily stopped him. "I'll go." She said.

Emily went into the kitchen. "Lorelai come back and finish your food." She said.

"So I can get ignored like Luke?" Lorelai exclaimed. "No thanks!"

"You're being dramatic as usual!" Emily said.

"No I'm not being dramatic. I'm being me! You said you wanted weekly family dinners but you're ignoring two thirds of the family!" Lorelai exclaimed.

"You've hardly been an active part of the conversation either!" Emily said.

"And why did dad have to bring up Christopher?" She exclaimed.

"Your dad likes Christopher. He's a good man and he's Rory's father. She should know what he's up to." Emily said. "Why you had to marry that diner man and not Christopher, I'll never know!" She said.

"I can't believe you!" Lorelai exclaimed angrily.

"Rory needs her father. She doesn't need that man in there. Really Lorelai, I swear you just married the first man you met just to get at us!"

From the kitchen, the whole argument could be heard. Rory glanced up at Luke and saw the hurt in his eyes.

"No mom! I married Luke because I love him! Can't you get that? I love him!" Lorelai shouted.

"Yes well you loved Christopher once." Emily said. "But when you got pregnant that went out the window. You were determined to everything on your own. You took that girl and cut us out of your lives! You're too proud to accept help from anyone."

"Well I wasn't too proud to come here and beg for money for my kid's school was I?" She exclaimed.

Rory's head shot up at that and looked at Luke questioningly. He sighed but nodded, indicating to her that it was true.

"Yes well now you get your money and I get my dinners." Emily said. "We both win."

The drive back was quiet, no one wanting to say anything. When they got home, they stood in the hallway for a moment.

"I'm just going to get a glass of water and I'll be right up." Luke said heading to the kitchen.

Lorelai sighed knowing he had heard the whole argument at dinner.

"Yeh I'm going to head to bed. Night mom." Rory said giving her a kiss on the cheek.

"Night hon." Lorelai gave her a small smile.

She slowly headed upstairs to her bedroom when she heard Rory's voice.

"I think it was really brave of you to go to them for money." She said.

Lorelai gave her a smile. Yeh, brave or stupid maybe." She joked weakly.

"Brave definitely. Night mom." Rory smiled.

"Night sweets." She smiled.

Rory walked down the hallway to go to her room. She saw Luke leaning against the counter drinking some water. "Luke?" She said.

"Oh hey.." He said. "You off to bed?"

"Yeh in a minute." Rory said. She was quiet for a moment and then she spoke again. "You're coming with us on Monday right?" She asked.

Luke looked confused.

"To Chilton." Rory said.

"Oh well only if you want me to." He said.

"I want you to." She smiled. "I need you as well as mom." She said pointedly.

Luke gave her a small smile. "I'll be there."

"Good." Rory smiled. She walked towards her room but turned around again. "I want you to know. I do need you. Whatever Grandma says, I do need you." She said.

"Come here." Luke smiled holding out her arms.

Rory went towards him and hugged him. "I love you Luke." She said quietly.

"Love you too kid." He said kissing the top of her head.

Rory smiled and pulled away. "Night." She said.

"Night Rory." He smiled.

"Oh you might want to pick up her suit from the dry cleaners. Knowing mom, she'll forget and have to wear like shorts or something on Monday." Rory joked.

Luke chuckled. "I'll get them."

"Night." Rory smiled disappearing into her room."

"Night." He said. He let out a breath and then took his glass of water and headed upstairs to bed.

Monday soon came and it was officially Rory's first day at Chilton. She got up and smiled when she could smell food coming from the kitchen. She went out to find Luke finishing off cooking some pancakes.

"You made pancakes!" Rory grinned.

"Thought I'd treat you on your first day." Luke smiled.

Lorelai walked in at that moment wearing the suit Luke had picked up for her. Rory grinned at her. "Mom, can we keep him?" She joked.

"I think it's a possibility." Lorelai grinned.

"You're both crazy." Luke muttered. "I'm going to go get changed. Be ready to go in 20 minutes." He said walking out of the kitchen.

"So how are you feeling?" Lorelai asked her daughter.

"Nervous but also a bit excited." Rory admitted. "I'll miss Lane though."

"You'll still see her loads here though." Lorelai said.

"Yeh I know." Rory smiled.

"You'll do great. I'm so proud of you." Lorelai smiled.

"Thanks mom." Rory smiled.

20 minutes later, Luke had come back down in a smart suit and they were all set to go. Luke drove them in his truck. He pulled up infront of a big building.

"Whoa..." Lorelai and Rory said at the same time looking up at it.

"You two get out and I'll go find somewhere to park. Find out where we have to go." Luke said.

Lorelai and Rory jumped out as Luke drove off. They looked around looking a bit lost.

"Do I have to know my way round this place?" Rory asked worried.

"I'm sure you'll get used to it." Lorelai assured her. "Now where do we have to be?"

"The Ambrose building." Rory said.

"And that is...?"

"No idea." Rory said looking around.

"You lost?" A man's voice said from behind them.

They spun round to find a middle ages man smiling at them.

"Yeh, we need to find the Ambrose building." Lorelai said.

"Oh that's right in here." He smiled gesturing to the building infront of them. "Are you new here?"

"Yeh my daughter's starting today." Lorelai said gesturing to Rory.

"I'm Ian Jack. My daughter, Julia, goes here too." He smiled. "So is it just the two of you here?" He asked fishing for information.

"What?" Lorelai asked confused.

"Is your dad not coming?" He asked Rory.

"Um no..." Rory said. She saw his face light up a bit and realised he was hitting on her mom. She stifled a smile. "But my step father should be here any moment. He's just parking."

"Oh..um..well have a good first day. I'll leave you to it." He said.

Rory then spotted Luke walking towards them and they all went in together. They headed to the Headmaster's room and waited to be escorted in.

"Ah Rory Gilmore!" Headmaster Charleston smiled as they came in. "Your grandmother has told me a lot about you!"

"Her grandmother?" Lorelai asked. It was then that she noticed her mother sat in a chair against the wall. "Mom!" She said surprised. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to wish my granddaughter luck on her first day at school." She said condescendingly. "Rory, you look darling in that uniform."

"Hi Grandma." She gave her a small smile.

"Well I won't hold you up. I just wanted to wish you luck." She smiled sweetly. "Lorelai, let's go."

Lorelai rolled her eyes. She then smiled at her daughter. "Good luck, hon. You'll be great." She smiled giving her a hug and a kiss.

"Thanks mom." Rory smiled.

She then turned to Luke but Emily interrupted them. "I'm sure Headmaster Charleston would like to speak to Rory. Let's not hold him up." She said.

Rory ignored her and hugged Luke. "I need all the good luck hugs I can get."

"I'll make you whatever you want for dinner tonight. Have a good day." He smiled.

"Thanks." She smiled. She then watched them all disappear out of the office.

Rory was having the worst first day ever and it wasn't even lunch yet. She had wrecked Paris' project and had obviously got on the wrong side of her for whatever reason and then all the boys were calling her Mary. On top of that, she had been given so many notes to catch up on that her bag felt like it was filled with bricks. She sighed as she walked into the canteen for lunch. She opted to sit at the end of one of the long tables by herself. She hadn't exactly made any friends yet. As she was eating, she felt someone sit opposite her. She looked up and saw Tristan, the blonde haired cocky boy who had instigated the Mary calling.

"Having a bad day, Mary?" He smirked.

"I was but now it's just got worse." She retorted.

"Ouch!" He smirked. "I'm just being nice here. I saw you sat by yourself and I thought I would talk to you to not make you feel lonely."

"Oh how gentlemanly of you." Rory said sarcastically.

"Well I aim to please, Mary." He nodded.

Rory rolled her eyes. "And you wonder why I don't want to talk to you." She said.

Tristan smirked. "You really are going for me today."

"Well if you actually learn my name and stop being a cocky jerk, then maybe I would be nicer." She retorted. She saw a group of girls watching them from another table. "Your fan club's waiting." She said. "Don't let me stop you."

Tristan gave her a cheeky grin. "They'll wait."

"Oh yeh I forgot. You're obviously like the king here. My mistake!" She said sarcastically. "If you don't mind, I'd like to get back to my reading."

Tristan held his hands up in mock surrender. "Ok I get the hint! But don't tell me that wasn't fun." He smirked.

Rory shot him a look but she smirked slightly when he got up and left. She shook her head and went back to her book.

Rory was grateful when it got to 3:30 and she was able to leave. She smiled when she found her mom waiting by her jeep outside. She went over, dropping her bag on the way and hugging her tightly. "Plaid skirt, my idea?" She asked.

"Aw hon, it'll get better." Lorelai assured her, returning the hug. She then went to pick up her bag and nearly fell with the weight of it. "Whoa! They expecting you to be the smartest all on the first day?" She joked.

"Chilton expect a lot." Rory said.

Lorelai threw the bag in the bag and before they got into the car, they heard a voice call across the courtyard.

"See you tomorrow Mary!" Tristan called with a smirk.

"Hopefully not!" Rory called.

"You wound me, Mary! You wound me!" He said with a cheeky grin.

Rory rolled her eyes and got into the car. Lorelai got in too and turned to her. "What was that all about?"

"Nothing. Just Tristan being Tristan." She said.

"He's cute." Lorelai grinned.

"He's also annoying, cocky, egotistical, need I go on?" Rory said.

Lorelai grinned. "You didn't deny he was cute."

Rory rolled her eyes. "Can we just go home please?"

"Ok! Oh Luke's made lasagne for dinner!" She smiled.

"He is the perfect man." Rory joked.

"He is at that." Lorelai smiled. She put the jeep in gear and started driving back home.
