Chapter 2 - Interrogations
The next morning the First Lady strode into her office only to find Olivia Pope standing inside.
"Excuse me, do I know you?"
"No. I'm Olivia Pope. I believe Cyrus mentioned me." She offered her hand.
The President started to enter but when he heard voices, he paused to listen.
The First Lady knows immediately why she is here and reluctantly shook hands with her.
"I know this is uncomfortable, but I'm not here to judge you. I want to help you, but that requires that you are forthcoming, answering all of my questions fully and truthfully. If I haven't asked you a question and you feel there is information that I need to know, then you need to tell me," Olivia instructed.
Under different circumstances, Mellie would probably have liked this woman, but currently, she doesn't like her tone at all. It is time to get some things straight.
"I don't know who you think you are—"
"I am a fixer. I help people out of bad situations and I make bad decisions go away. I am not here to be your friend or coddle you. I mean no disrespect but my time is precious and I don't have any to sit here and argue with you. However, if you prefer, I will gladly leave and you can clean up this mess yourself. Now tell me everything."
Before Mellie could answer, the President strode inside.
"Mellie, sit down and answer her."
She spun around and glared at him before finally acknowledging defeat and sauntering over to the couch where she slowly sat. Her jaw is trembling due to the anger that is festering inside of her, but she did all she could to squelch it so Fitz would get no satisfaction in rattling her.
Olivia's gaze shifted between her and the President before she sat. Fitz, taking the cue, joined his wife on the couch.
"How long have you been having an affair with Billy?"
Mellie inhaled sharply and fixed her stare on Olivia. "Seven months."
"Did anyone else know?"
"Not that I'm aware of," Mellie said before averting her gaze.
"Is it possible that Billy could have made the video?"
"I guess anything is possible in Washington but in my opinion, I don't believe that he did that. I can't imagine what motive he would have in doing so."
"Let me worry about the motives."
Mellie shifted her legs to stop herself from getting up and snatching the attitude right out of Olivia.
"Where did most of your meetings take place?"
"At his residence or in our offices."
"Is it possible a neighbor could have seen you?"
Mellie thought back but nothing came to mind. "I don't ever remember seeing any of his neighbors."
"Is he in love with you?" Olivia asked digging a little further.
"Good lord, I hope not."
"I need more than hope, First Lady," Olivia said watching the First Lady's eyes narrow.
"I do believe that he wanted more from the relationship."
"How much more?"
The First Lady is starting to get impatient with the line of questioning.
"I'm not a mind reader, Ms. Pope."
"Answer the question."
The President observed their exchange carefully. Olivia is a force to be reckoned with and Mellie is about due for an epic meltdown.
"You're a vile little creature aren't you?"
No one said a word, but Olivia smirked for a second and then said, "Answer the question."
The First Lady leaned forward and said, "I've already answered it. We didn't talk that much."
"Did you use protection?"
Mellie's eyes threw daggers at her. Who the hell does this woman think she is asking her such a personal question?
When Mellie refused to respond, Olivia backed down. "Fine, is there anything else that I should know about?"
The First Lady shook her head.
Olivia studied her for a moment and realizes that the interview was over. If looks could kill, she would have been dead ten minutes ago. "Should you remember anything else, please don't hesitate to call me. I left my card on your desk."
Mellie rolled her eyes and walked out of the room. She needed to get some air.
"Welcome to my hell," the President said sarcastically.
Olivia ignored the comment. "Do you think she was telling me the whole truth?"
"No," Fitz answered quickly.
Olivia let out a deep breath. "That's what I thought."
Before he could respond, Billy bursts through the doorway.
"Mr. President," he said in shock.
Olivia smiled at her good luck. "Mr. Chambers, please come in."
Billy was a bit dazed but he sat in a chair and perused her. "I don't believe I know you."
"I'm Olivia Pope. I've been hired to deal with your situation."
He kind of chuckled. "So, I've now become a situation?"
"Yes. Would you mind answering a few questions?"
Billy nervously glanced at the President, then to Olivia and back again.
Olivia stared at the President for a moment trying to silently communicate.
"Oh," he said suddenly as he got the hint, "I have something to do. Why don't you two talk?"
He put out his hand towards Olivia and she shook it.
"Nice seeing you again Ms. Pope," he said staring into her eyes a hair longer than he should.
He ignored Billy and strode out of the room.
"Awkward," Billy said nervously.
"Very. So Billy, how long have you been seeing the First Lady?'
He shifted in his chair. "You just go right for the jugular, don't you?"
Olivia smiled. "Why mince words? I've seen the sex tape."
Billy blushed and then stood. She is a little too close to him and is making him nervous as hell.
"I don't know, maybe eight months or so."
"Do you have feelings for her?"
Olivia watched his behavior carefully.
"Well, I do care for her," he said stuttering.
She continued to stare at him and mentally note his reactions.
"I mean, I don't want to come off like an ass. We enjoyed each other's company, so to speak."
Olivia still said nothing as he fidgeted.
"Are you thirsty?" Billy asked before moving to the water cooler.
"Mr. Chambers," she said firmly.
"Billy. People call my father Mr. Chambers. I prefer, Billy," he rattled off.
She nodded. "Do you plan on breaking things off with the First Lady?"
He made a face as his eyes grew wide. "I suppose that would be the right thing to do."
"You come off as being so much more confident on T.V.," she quipped.
He is quiet for a moment and then gulped down some water. "You're kind of freaking me out right now."
"As long as you're telling me the truth, there is nothing to be afraid of, but if you're lying…" She stood and then moved in front of him, "I will know and I won't stop until every stone is unturned; stones that you thought you buried years ago. Stones you thought were buried so deep that no one could possibly find them. Those are just the kind of stones I like and I will find them, Mr. Chambers, and I will bury you with them," she said almost menacingly.
Billy almost choked on his water as her words shook him.
"If you have anything relevant to add to this conversation, here's my number," she said before handing him a card.
Before she made it to the doorway, she turned around. "And for now, please keep it your pants."
He blushed again as she walked into the hallway.
