I meant to do a rewrite to this back when I first wrote it, in my Junior year of High School when the prequels were coming out. But life goes on and gets in the way of plans, I sort of gave up on fanfiction. As of late I've been trying to write more original fiction and I hope to one day turn professional. This is a longer more explained version of the story with some punctuation and spelling corrections. I decided to post it as a seperate chapter to show myself how I've grown as writer. So Enjoy.
"What are you waiting for? Do It". Rorschach asked, almost pleadingly, with tears beginning to trail down his cheeks in grief and fear. He saw the glowing deity standing there, not ending his life. He ground his teeth and felt his muscles clench in anger. "DO IT!" He roared. Finally he saw the superman raise his arm and felt himself run through with a massive bust of energy and his vision was clouded by bright blue light. And then he knew nothing but darkness.
As he fell through Oblivion he felt his mind slowly alter to a younger self, a less damaged self before he encountered that animal Grice. He felt his rage quell and a level of serenity, He felt Rorschach slip back into the shadows and Walter Joseph Kovacks come to the forefront of himself. He felt his personality shift to someone who felt care for other and was not just a being of pure rage.
"Rorschach, Wake up".The man who was once Rorschach awoke with a start. He looked up to see Jon Osterman, Dr. Manhattan, standing above him smiling. "Dr. Manhattan? Why aren't I dead?"he asked as he pushed himself slightly away from the Atomic Super Human. The neon blue man looked above them at a starry sky. "I have just regained my fondness for life. I couldn't kill you." Jon reached out a hand to Walter and helped him to his feet. As he stood up he saw a blue hairless creature behind Jon, after a moment he jumped back. It was Veidt's lynx, Bubastis, having apparently been reconfigured like Dr. Manhattan himself had been. "Don't worry she means you no harm." As if to prove Jon right the cat rubbed against Walter's legs. Deciding to leave the Cat be, Walter returned his attention to Jon. "Do the others know I'm still alive?" he inquired. "No, I transfigured some of the snow into an identical genetic match for your blood. The other three will believe I killed you, especially when the see the footage of Adrian's security camera." Jon Replied.
"So now what will happen to the others?" Jon waved his hand and a screen appeared before them showing pictures of various people. Daniel and Laurie's wedding. Sally Jupiter welcoming Byron Lewis to her home after he was released from the asylum. Dan and Laurie playing with their children in the park. A monument dedicated to the Minutemen and the Crimebusters being built with stone statues of each member. A memorial to all the victims of Veidt's attack being Walter saw two muscular old gay men at the monument of the Minutemen. He frowned, Why was Manhattan showing him this? He peered at this image more closely and then his jaw dropped. He recognized that the first was Captain Metropolis and, if he was right, the other must be Hooded Justice, {he recalled Daniel telling him Hollis' stories of the Minutemen and of the two's relationship, it appeared that the first Nite Owl had been wrong about killing the hooded warrior.} both alive and having survived the destruction of New York.
Then he looked over at a scene of Veidt weeping alone in his Antartica base alone, miserable, and hating himself. Despite Veidt's evil plot. Walter couldn't help but feel sorry for him. While he was disgusted with the carnage Veidt had caused, he still felt an affection for his old teammate. The Crimebusters had gone through together things that most people could not even comprehend. They were in essence the closet things to family each other had and despite their fights and disagreements there was a bond, perhaps even love, that few others could understand.
"So what do we do now?" he asked turning to his old teammate. "Well unless you have something you wish to do. I was hoping you would come with Bubastis and I as we travel the cosmos." Walter thought for a moment. "What are you planning to do out in the universe?" Jon smiled "I hope to create some life on another planet, to continue to explore the beauty of life." Walter looked at a picture of the surviving Crimebusters and Minutemen at what seemed to be a family get together. It looked about ten years later, judging from from how their old comrades looked. To his surpise and perhaps even joy he saw Ozymandias was among the group. The earth seemed to truly be at peace and he did admit perhaps it would be best if he went with Jon and the lynx, if only so that the clarity his mind held would continue to stay and his single minded madness would not return. For the first time in a very long time he felt an emotion he no longer knew he could feel. Hope. Knowing his answer he turned to the blue man."Alright but first I think we should pay our respects to our dead and I have to see Vei..." Walter paused "... I mean Adrian." Jon smiled "Alright Walter". He felt his eyebrows raise, It felt strange to hear a fellow crimefighter call him by his birth name, but at the same time he though it felt nice. and in a flash the three were gone.
The Trio walked into a cemetary it smelled of rain and the earth. The Moon shown high in the heavens like a spotlight on a stage. The two men in the trio placed roses on two graves The first was of Ursula Zandt, The Silhoutte and the marker next to it of her Gretchen. The Other four were quickly found William Benjamin Brady, Dollar Bill, then to most recent casualty of their small brotherhood Hollis T. Mason, The Original Nite Owl, and Even Moloch; Edgar William Jacobi, Walter had to admit he had felt a bit of fondness and sympathy for the former crime boss in their few encounters and horror and later grief at his murder. and finally, The Comedian himself; Edward Morgan Blake. The group paused longest at this before vanishing in a flash.
Adrian Veidt sat crying in his office in New York, disgusted at the things he had done. Yes he had saved the world, but at what price? Not only the lives of millions but the cost of the only people who he had ever been close to, after his parents and lover died. He felt exhausted but could not allow himself to sleep for fear of the nightmare that haunted him each time he closed his eyes. "Adrian"a voice spoke, Veidt's head shot up in shock, he could not believe what he was beholding. There standing before him was Rorschach; clean and healthy looking, in the middle of his office. He realized one of two things had finally occurred: either he had finally gone insane from guilt or Rorschach's indomitable will had allowed him to return from death. He jumped away from the phantom of Rorschach in fear, surely he had come to drag him to hell. The figure approached him. "Stay Back, Please,I'm sorry!" he shouted at Rorschach's spirit with tears flooding down his face. Suddenly he felt arms around his torso. Rorschach was hugging him, and patting him on the back. He looked at Rorscha- no Walter's face and realized this was not a ghost. Walter smiled and whispered in his ear. "It's alright Adrian I forgive you. Goodbye." and then he stood back "Reach out to Laurie and Daniel, Adrian, in the end we are the closest thing to family each other have." and with that Walter Kovacks vanished. "Wait, Rorschach, Please, Come Back!" Adrian Shouted. But, once again he was alone.
Ten Years Later
In the decade since Eddie Blake's death much had happened for Dan Dreiberg. He had discovered Hooded Justice and Captain Metropolis were both still alive and had reunited them with their teammates. And speaking of the Minutemen, he had used his wealth to secure the release of Mothman permanently from the Asylum and he had since taken up Residence with Sally who was overjoyed to have her old friends back. As for the younger Silk Spectre, She and Dan were Celebrating eight years of Marriage and seven years of Parenthood, Two girls; Ursula Jane and Sally Elizabeth and Two Boys; Mason Benjamin and Edward Joseph.
Dan and Laurie Dreiberg sat with their family as they watched their children run around their grandmother's Lawn. Suddenly they watched as their daughter Ursula stopped and stared at something "Look!" she shouted while pointing at something none in the group had ever thought they would see. Standing about five yards away from the children on top of a small hill, were two men. One was a man about fifty-five who had graying red hair, The other was bright blue and bald and with them was what appeared to be a blue hairless lynx. As the children and the seven adults all stood staring, The two men smiled and waved before the three vanished in a flash of bright light. The children ran back to their Parent's and grandparents and stood with them amazed at the strange sight.
Eddie, Dan and Laurie's youngest son looked at the faces of parents, his siblings, His Mother and Father, Grandma Sally and Great Uncle's Nelly, Bryon and Jacob and Uncle Adrian, his godfather and saw him smiling, yet tears rolled down his face. "Who were those people Uncle Adrian?" he asked. The others all looked at him as well. He saw Dan and Laurie both had watery eyes also. He took a moment to find his voice but, as he spoke, his smile grew. "Some old friends of your parent's and me. Some very dear friends."
