That night Clorine lay in bed, she couldn't sleep the "dare" was on her mind
"Find out what happened?' she whispered to herself while staring at the ceiling "how I'm I supposed to do that?"
She tried to think about everything she knew of what happened that day in history a day that everyone knew about but never spoke about. She had heard a rumor here and there, but it was never much all she had to go one was bits and pieces.
She sat up and look out the window at the stars "How is one poor girl supposed to figure out a lost mystery?"
The next morning She was dressed and down stairs before breakfast was done
"Well, if this isn't unusual" her mother commented when she saw her daughter fully dressed and ready to go.
Clorine put on her best smile, "I thought I save you the trouble of climbing the stairs." she said sweetly
Her mother raised an eyebrow while a suspicious look came on her face
"So I was wondering" Clorine begin. Leaning against the counter "what did happen to the king?"
Her mother sent her a questioning look, "I don't know I don't hear any castle gossip nowadays."
"Not King Philippe" Clorine replied "What happened to King Louie?"
Clorine's mother gasped and dropped the spatula she was holding "Shush don't say that name out loud! What in the world would cause you to ask such a question?"
Taken aback slightly, she stammered a little before answering, "I.. was just wondering why no one ever mentions the old king plus the anniversary of his disappearance is coming up I just got curious."
Her mother shook her head, "You do best to keep your curiosity in your head, it's a shame to even think about what happened one that tragic day."
Well, that didn't help my curiosity any. Clornie thought. She remained silent all through breakfast as did her mother
Clornie was about to walk out the door when her mother spoke up
"Mind yourself and don't go asking questions that no business being asked"
She nodded "yes ma'am" quickly, leaving the house I thought popped into her head, I know someone that will talk and I don't even have to say a thing.
quickly makeing her way to the General store the owner had a bigger mouth than half of Paris put together. Pulling her dark blue hood over her head, she walked in and started "browsing" the shelf's near the counter
"Such a sad day" someone checking out murmured
"Aye, it is" The owner said, nodding his head "such a shame."
"No one ever saw it coming" The customer replied
The Owner sighs "who thought such a hero could become filled with such greed."
Clorine cocked her head
The other person agreed before leaving
Slightly stomping her foot Clorine huffed No Help! Know I'm even more confused. She wished she could ask, but her mother told her not to and she didn't feel like totally disobeying she felt bad enough going behind her mothers back as it was.
Looking around a smirk slowly formed on her face "Thomas!" she whispered loudly
He looked around confused before he spotted her, motioning for him to come
"What?" he asked, "you give up?"
"As if! You know me, I never give up a dare, " she said "I just need a little help"
His eyebrows raised "on what?"
She looked around "I need you to approach the subject with Mr. Cornel"
"Why?"
"Because I'm in need of something to go on! Your dare didn't have enough to be a reasonable, dare" she said slightly annoyed
Thomas rolled his eyes "you know nothing about it?"
"All I know is that the king went missing and that the we blame the queen"
"Fine I'll ask" he grumbled
She smiled triumphantly as he walked away.
"Hey Mr. Cornel" Thomas said, walking up to the counter "lots of story's flying around today."
"Really?" the store owner said "what about?"
"Yes" Clorine said to herself. He was taking the bait
Thomas continued "oh you know about what happened 18 years ago tomorrow"
"Ah yes." Mr. Cornel said, nodding "so what have you heard?"
"Oh, you know the usual" he said "just that's it's the anniversary of the disappearance and we should all mourn the lost of the king and Queen"
Clorine held her breath, no one ever mentioned the queen, other than it being rumored that she was somehow linked to whatever happened, maybe she finally find out what that was.
Mr. Cornel shook his head furiously "No! Not the Queen just the King."
Thomas faked shock "but wasn't there a queen?"
"Yes, but she's the reason for this!" The owner almost yelled
"She is? I haven't heard! What happened?" he said
The owner hung his head "such a sad ending. She was loved by many. But eventually she went crazy lost sight of what she stood for she wanted the throne all to herself. But her plan failed and she disappeared along with the king."
"How tragic" Thomas exclaimed dramatically
Clorine couldn't help but roll her eyes Thomas could be such a drama king.
After a couple minutes of Silents. She went outside and waited for Thomas.
"Happy!?" he said, walking out the door "now you know exactly what happened! There practically isn't a dare anymore!"
"That's what everyone believes happened" Clorine replied "I like to hear the story from someone that was actually there."
"What difference does it make?" he asked
She sighed "I want to know why the Queen went crazy if there was a cause! For all we know it could have been the king who lost it and She was just trying to do France a favor."
Thomas burst out laughing, "I highly doubt it! But if you're sure there's more to this then by all means the dare is still on."
"We shall see who has the last laugh" she replied
"I have a question for you though, " he said
She sighed "What is it?"
"Why do you always defend the queen? You yourself said we know nothing other than what people have said" he said crossing his arms
She shrugged "I don't know call it instantiation if you want. I just feel like there's more to it than what everyone assumes"
"Whatever, " he said before walking away
Clorine looked around trying to spot a musketeer "Why is it there's hardly any left?" she asked herself. Finally, she spotted one
"Monsieur!" she called walking over to where he was standing
He looked at her "Yes, can I help you?"
"Yes, well I was wondering if I could speak to someone that's been on the force for at least nineteen years" she asked
"I'm sorry miss, but any that were on the force that long ago have either retired to places unknown, died or disappeared." He answered
"Disappeared?" she questioned
A strange look crossed his face "I need to go, " he said before quickly walking away
"Ugh!" Clorine clenched her fists "another dead end"
A carriage went by heading towards the castle
"Of course, " she whispered, looking at the palace "what better way to get answers, then from where it began."
