Chapter 2

June 14th, 2007
Vancouver, 12:14 am

Despite the lack of answers to his many questions, the Doctor found himself quite content with his surroundings. 416 kilometres, 31 minutes, a large, dangerous creature and 7 other people managed to keep the Doctor entertained. So entertained, that he never discovered the brunette's name. There was just something about her.

They had just landed at what looked like a private air strip, where the Doctor could see the beast being loaded in to a van, as he himself descended from the plane. They were rushed through security, and picked up in a stretch town car. The two men from the clearing, were sitting up the front with the driver, while the two women sat with the Doctor and his companions. The blonde leant back, folding her arms across her chest.

"So... Why's such a big and scary ghoulie after three harmless looking people?"

The brunette shot the girl beside her an exasperated look. The Doctor, however, just laughed.

"I think you'll you find that we're hardly harmless at all." Looking at his two companions, he shrugged. "Well, at least i'm not."

The blonde narrowed her eyes, her hand stayed to her gun in her right holster. The brunette put her hand over hers, halting the young woman's draw.

"I believe what my daughter had intended to say, was why was that creature attacking you?"

Amy leant forward, resting her folded arms on her knees.

"I fail to see how it's any of your business?"

Rory placed a hand on her shoulder, sending an apologetic look to the two women. The blonde rolled her eyes, glaring at Amy, while the brunette fixed her attention on the Doctor.

With narrowed eyes, she asked him his favorite question.

"Who are you?"

With a grin and a quirk of an eyebrow, he answered.

"Why my dear... I'm the Doctor."

The look of utter amusement emoted by the blonde almost surpassed the surprised recognition of the brunette. Almost.

Tilting his head, he looked at the brunette in confusion.

"And... You would be?" He questioned.

The woman simply smiled at him, pushing the door open and stepping outside.

"Come along."

He narrowed his eyes, blinking in annoyance at the complete brush off he'd just received. The blonde followed her mother, winking at a still glaring Amy as she stepped out of the car.

The Doctor and his two companions looked at each. Rory's mouth was ajar, staring at the door the two women had just exited. Amy slapped his arm, pouting inn annoyance.

The brunette's head reappeared in the doorway, an eyebrow raised.

"Well? Hop to it. Will you be coming or not?"

The three shared another glance, then the Doctor made a shoo-ing sign to Rory. Sighing, Rory climbed out of the car first, followed by Amy, and then the Doctor.

Staring up at the huge, imposing building before them, the Doctor noticed a creature in one of the windows. Furrowing his brow in yet more confusion, he noticed the brunette standing at the entrance door. Gesturing at Amy and Rory to follow, he approached the woman smirking at him. Turning on her heel, she walked in, the Doctor, Amy and Rory following behind her.

They'd entered a large entrance hall. A high ceiling held an ornate chandelier, and the windows were tall, stained glass. The woman led them to an elevator, where they proceeded down several levels. Once the doors opened, the Doctor's eyes did also.

Never had he seen so many different creatures all living in the same area, together, before. It was an incredible sight. A sight that even amazed the great Doctor,

The woman stood in the middle of the room, her back to the three people behind her, standing in awe.

"The blonde you met earlier is my daughter Ashley. The two men, Henry and Will." Turning to face them, she smiled coyly, straight into the Doctor's eyes. "My name, is Doctor Helen Magnus. And this, is the Sanctuary."

~.~

Helen watched as the three before her took in their surroundings. The strange one, the Doctor, snapped to look at her with disbelief.

"Doctor? You can't be the doctor. I'm the Doctor. There can't be two doctors. It's insane. Crazy. Bonkers. Absolutely unacceptable. No, you'll just have to change your name." He begun to pace, shaking his head back an forth. Helen watched in amusement as he rambled out titles he approved for her. He stopped still, clapped his hands, then clicked his fingers toward her. "I've got it! How about... Vice Doctor. Yes. It's perfect. Then you're still a doctor, but i'll be The Doctor. Yes. What do you think?"

Helen blinked in shock. The Doctor standing there, his look of pure seriousness rattling her slightly.

"But then again." He continued, pacing again. "From what little i've seen at this very moment, i must admit i find myself impressed by this structure. Which, in itself, grants you a modicum chance with the title, the Doctor. But. I'm the Doctor. So that just won't work. Vice Doctor it is then."

Helen narrowed her eyes, a small smile gracing her lips.

"I'm glad you approve Mr Doctor."

He stopped pacing, shook his head, and stepped toward her.

"The Doctor. THE Doctor. Not Mr Doctor. The Doctor. Actually, just call me Doctor."

He pushed forward, extending his hand for her to shake. He flicked his head back to his two companions.

"That's Amy and Rory. Amy's the red head, Rory's the awkward looking guy. Just in case you got the two confused."

Helen gripped his hand, nodding at the two glaring at his back.

"Pleasure. Please, follow me. We have much to discuss." Gesturing to the corridor to her office, Helen led the three newcomers away.

~.~

Entering behind Helen, the Doctor took great interest in visibly examining her office. Ones space reflected ones person after all. The large uncovered windows and the fact the door had not originally been closed suggests an openness about the room. The comfortable looking furniture and the personal items decorating the room projected an approachable feeling. The many books occupying her shelves, desk and tables implied intelligence. While the antique object assured wisdom and acknowledgement of the past.

Speaking of the past, was that a photo of Einsteen he saw. Walking past her, he picked up the photo on the shelf behind Helen's desk.

"My, my, my. You've met Einsteen as well have you?" He exclaimed, lifting the photo with both the man, and the woman standing before him. "Well, was he as nice a chap to you as he was to me? Oh no matter. Tell me. Have you met Jeff too?"

Before Helen could reply, Ashley and Will stalked in to the room.

"I don't care Will. That ghoul almost took my head off. You should have let me shoot it."

"Shoot it! It's scared and confused, And you pointing the business end of a gun at it's face isn't going to help it relax.'

Helen rubbed her temples, shooting an apologetic look at the Doctor, before placing her hands on the two arguing in front of her.

"Enough! Now what's going on?"

Ashley and Will glared at each other, then both trying to talk over each other. The Doctor noticed Helen close her eyes momentarily. Then, they opened.

"Stop this at once!"

They quietened quickly, causing the Doctor to wish Amy and Rory listened to him like those two listened to Helen.

"Now, from what little i understood of that uncomprehendible gibberish, is that the creature attacked Ashley."

"It's not his fault. It's in it's instincts."

Will argued with Helen, all three of them temporarily forgetting the other occupants in the room.

"I can't risk it Will. The creature is too dangerous.:

Will closed his eyes, placing his hands together against his forehead. Opening his eyes, he sighed.

"Just... Give me some time. Please I'll, talk to it, i'm sure he'll understand me. Just... Give me some time."

Helen stared at him, her jaw clanched,

"One week... I'll give you one week and that is it. Do you understand me Will? One week."

Will nodded, his hands returning from his head to his pockets.

"Crystal Magnus. I'm going to go try and talk to it. He's sedated now so i should be fine."

He left the room, Ashley following after a look from her mother. Helen turned to the Doctor, sighing.

"I apologize for that display. The creature that attacked you today. It seems to be rather distressed."

The Doctor started shaking his head, holding his hands up and waving them.

"No, no, no, with Prisoner 13 is not a good idea. Not a good idea at all. A terrible one actually."

A look of confusion crossed Helens features, causing a coy smile to play at the Doctors lips.

"Prisoner 13?" She inquired turning her head back to where Will had just left, then back to him. But before his witty retort was able to pass his lips, another voice chimmed in. Rory's.

"You don't mean like Prisoner Zero, right Doctor?" he asked nervously, pressing on when no reply came. "Doctor?"

Again before he could reply, he was cut off. This time, by Amy.

"Like Prisoner Zero who escaped through the crack in my wall?" Her voice was anxious as she wapped her arms around herself as if to hide the discomfort at the memory of it. Jumping in before anyone else had the chance to again, he finally spoke.

"Yes Amy, Rory. Now hush- I'm trying to talk to Helen here." He scolded his friends playfully before turning and flashing the woman a dazzling smile. To which he recieved no reaction and his smile wavered. She certainly was something... different. Though he couldn't quite figure out what it was. Nonetheless, he clapped his hands together, continuing on.

"well then yes, Prosoner 13. Well, maybe. I'm not quite certain, didn't get a proper look. Speaking of which, your friend just went down to you new house guest." The Doctor ramblen on before finally taking a breath.

"Yes?" Helen asked, ever passive. Her calm behaviour contrasting starkly with the loud, flamboyant nature of the Doctor.

"Mind if we sit in?"

~.~

"One last time, im here to help you. We don't want to hurt you here. Okay?" Will paused, waiting for a response that diidn't come.

Up in the viewing room, Will saw Helen enter followed by two of the people who arrived with the strange tall man. The woman with the red hair stood close to the man, leaning into him and whispering something. Will expected the last of their party, the man in the tweed suit to follow them in, but when he didn't, Will just nodded to Helen and turned his attention back to the new paitent.

The tall creature was bound to the brick wall on the side of the room, for safety of course. Even though it was still heavily sedated it still managed a meancing growl as it attempted to stand. When it fell back to the floor, Will held up h hands, stepping forwards.

"Hey just take it easy okay?" He said softly, trying to appear as harmless as possible.

The door swung open and the last stranger from the clearing made his entrance, looking back and forth from the abnormal to Will. He rushed into the room and ushered Will behind him, brandishing some sort of device at the drowsy creature. The thing was long and metallic, emitting both a green light from its tip and a strange humming, whirring sound.

"Best to keep your distance." He said to Will, still holding the strange thing out at him. As the sound reached the creature it roared, lashing forward at where they stood with its sharp claws.

It was in pain.

Will yanked the man away and pulled the device from his hand, the sound cut off and the abnormal slumped against the wall.

"What are you doing?" He asked the man angrily "That is now how we do things here."

The man regarded him cautiously, he walked around him and held out his hand.

"My screwdriver?" He asked plainly.

It took Will a second to realise that he was reffering to the long metal contraption in his hand. Looking down at it with narrowed eyes, it looked nothing like a screwdriver. Still, he handed it over.

Will watched in curosity as the man twisted the little metal thing and leaned around him, pointing it at the patient once more. He almost reached out to snatch it away again, but this time when it was activated, it made no sound, and the creature barely stirred. With a flourish of his hand, the top of the device sprung upwards and opened. The man examined it and closed it with a frown.

"Oh not good. Not good at all, no." he muttered to himself. Finally, Will could stand it no longer.

"I'm sorry. Who are you and why are you down here?" He asked, his patience running dangerously thin.

"I'm the Doctor, you must be Will." He said, extending his hand. Will gave him a curt nod, and he dropped his hand awkwardly, busying himself with slipping his... 'screwdriver' into his jacket pocket.

"Right then." The Doctor started, glancing at the patient slumped on the ground. It was being strangely quiet, passive even. "I think we should keep back from our new friend here. Mustn't get too close" He said slowly.

Will folded his arms and looked at him in disbelief.

"He's not going anywhere. He's still sedated. Besides, i was hardly closer than i am now." Will replied, the man gave him a strange look, dark eyebrows furrowing over deep set green eyes.

"Right." He said in a low voice, pulling the screwdriver thing from his pocket once more. To Will's surprise the device was pointed at him, a softer hum sounded - one that didn't distress the patient - and the Doctor stepped closer and waved his 'screwdriver' in front of Will's face. He batted it away, an incredulous look on his face, though the man didn't back down. He simply waved his hand around, the thing whirring in the air around him. When he examined the device the frown on his face deepened for a moment, then he looked back up to Will, the look vanishing altogether.

"Right." He repeated, louder this time. With a smile and a nod, Will watched on in silence as the absurd change of tone took place, unable to get a word in even if he'd wanted to. "Right, well I'd best be getting off to my friends. They like to wander those two, can't trust 'em in a big old place like this, we'll be sending out search parties for them soon enough." He managed a small chuckle at his own joke then stole a cautious glance at the patient. "It was lovely meeting you and your…er, yes. Well then." He finished, exiting the room.

Will felt angry, some strange, absurd man comes barging into the room, waving around what could have very well been a weapon and probably ruining all the progress he'd struggled to make with the difficult creature. Then, just as quickly as he'd come, he'd made his excuses to leave. Was this some kind of sick joke Ashley was trying to pull? Because he wouldn't let her have her way and put a bullet in the creature's head? Surely it had to be, she was always so trigger happy, most of time she was probably laughing behind his back for attempting to even talk or reason with the abnormals they took in.

Who else was in on it?

~.~

Looking down as the Doctor assessed who he believed was Prisoner 13, Amy hugged herself. She looked around the room, her eyes landing on Doctor Magnus. She stood at the glass panel, an electronic pad in her hands. She turned her body toward her, shrugging her shoulders.

"So, what is it you do here exactly?"

Magnus looked up at her, smiling warmly. Amy, didn't return it.

"It's not called the Sanctuary for nothing. This is a...safe haven, i suppose. We protect and treat abnormals. There are many Sanctuary buildings around the world, this is just one of them. I'm the head of the network."

Amy nodded slowly, raising her eyebrow.

"Right." She drawled out, still not liking Helen, despite she'd been nothing but hospitible to them.

Turning back to watch the Doctor, she winced as the man, (Will she thought his name was), snatched The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver out of his hand. That, was not a good idea at all. She jumped slightly when the dorr behind her flew open. The other man who was with them before, (Henry?), entered, carrying his own electonic pad. Walking in with his head down, he started mumbling at Helen.

"Something's wrong. As in mucho grande wrong. But... I don't know what." He was still staring at his pad, even as Helen looked over his shoulder.

Amy glanced at Rory, raising her eyebrow. He shrugged, gesturing to The Doctor below.

"Reckon he'd be able to tell what's going on?"

Amy shrugged, looking back at Helen and Henry. They were speaking in hushed voices, and she could barely make out what they were saying.

"...interference... malfunction... can't find..."

She rolled her eyes, returning to look back below. The Doctor had just pulled out his screwdriver again, waving it over the creature.

"Whoa... I so want one of those."

She turned to look at Henry, narrowing her eyes.

"Well, you're not going to get one. So don't even bother."

Henry blinked at her, gulping.

"Okay... It was just a statement."

Amy rolled her eyes again, shaking her head.

"Whatever."

She saw Rory smile at Henry apologetically. So in turn, she glared at him. Rory shrugged his shoulders at her. She shook her head again, watching as The Doctor left the room. Will stood for a few moments, glaring at the door The Doctor had just disappeared through. He shook his head, took one glance at the monster, then followed. She sighed, turning her back to the window. Helen and Henry were still looking at the pad, but every now and then Henry would glance at her, before snapping back down. Sure, she probably shouldn't have snapped at him, but he was annoying her. The door once again flew open, with Will quicklly following.

"Magnus! Is there a reason "The Doctor"," He said, air quoting, "barged in? I mean, how am i supposed to get anything out of the abnormal if i have him" He pointed at The Doctor, as he storlled casually through the door " interrupting?"

Helen raised her eyebrow, pursing her lips.

"Calm yourself Will. There's no need to get upset."

Will huffed, staring at Helen, before turning on his heel and stalking out. The Doctor turned his head, watching as he pushed past him. He turned back to Helen, smiling cheekily.

"Well... He certainly is a friendly guy. Very, very friendly indeed."

Helen sighed, shaking her head.

"He normally is. I'm terribly sorry for the Doctor."

The Doctor shrugged, cocking his head to the side.

"Hello" He said, sticking his hand out to Henry. Henry grasped his hand, juggling the pad in his other.

"Hey, Henry." He said, introducing himself.

"Ah, Doctor. Well, The Doctor, but let's not go back in to that hmm." He said with a grin. He looked to Helen, who seemed to be watching him intently. Amy, for one, did not like that at all. She didn't care if it was simply curiousness, but regardless, The Doctor, was taken.

Helen furrowed her eyebrow, smiling in amusement and, yes, curiousness.

"Do you really not remember me?" She asked, raising her eyebrow to The Doctor. The Doctor, once again, cocked his head to the side.

"Hmmmm... No, no, not that i know of. It's possible, but then, wait... Wiat i've got it!" He exclaimed with a shout, and a point to the ceiling. "You're the girl. The girl from the alley. Oh, that sounded bad. But oh well. Yes, that's what was familiar about you." He said, grinning at Helen.

Helen shook her head, sighing. The Doctor pouted at her.

"Well i'm so sorry that i didn't recognise you, but then, you were younger, and blonde. You were definitely blonde. But i like the brunette. Very... Brunette-y."

Helen blinked, shaking her head in amusement. Amy however, shook hers in annoyance. This, was not looking good.
