Historical background:
The Ottoman Empire conquered a part of Hungary in the Middle Ages and Hungary couldn't get it back, the Austrians, the Habsburgs did. Howver, after they defeated the Ottoman Empire they didn't give the land back to Hungary. They kept it and made Hungary part of their own empire. On 15th March 1848 a revolution broke out in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary and it seemed to be effective. However, it soon turned into a war, it turned into a war, which was won by the Habsburgs in 1849. This story takes place after Hungary was defeated. It's AU, in which Harry was asked by the Hungarians to be a commander and on 6th October 1849 he is to be executed with twelve others at Arad, in Hungary by the Austrians as an example.
Martyrs
Five hours.
He spots a woman with a hood on, he is sure that he is already hallucinating, because he sees the flash of a wand. However, the woman is still approaching as if the thousands of guards cannot see her.
Yes, he must be seeing things. Though, in five hours he is going to be killed, surely, seeing young woman is not the worst way to spend the last few hours.
He closes his eyes and tries to fall asleep once again, without success.
"Harry!" Now he is hearing voices too. His mind is truly playing games with him. Sick games, as he is hearing the one voice he would do anything to come across with once again before he dies. He doesn't open his eyes, not until he is shaken by someone.
It can't be five o'clock in the morning so soon.
"Harry Potter!" He opens his eyes only to close it again, because he is broken, he has lost his mind. Ginny was there, with her fierce brown eyes and flaming red hair.
"Go away!" he says angrily, clearly not believing his own eyes.
"Do what you want, and I do what I want – I am trying to rescue you," she says in the same tone, crossing her arms. She is just like in his mind, so beautiful and powerful at the same time.
"How?" he murmurs and she rolls her eyes. She takes out something from her pocket and he once again cannot believe what he sees. A wand is in her hand and she rolls her eyes at his surprise.
"I thought that you were some sort of strategist genius, but you are slow, that is indisputable," she states and with a wave of her wand his chains fall down.
"But... how?" he asks again and she laughs.
"There are magical people all around the world – why would Hungary be any different?" she questions him slowly and he nods. She helps him up and he slowly puts his arms around her, still not quite accepting the fact that she is there.
"We need to save the others, Ginny," he says, inhaling her scent as he is not ready to let her go. She does not reply and he takes a step back, watching her.
"I am not sure that it is possible, Harry," her accent is a lot stronger than he remembers, while her voice is full of emotions. He looks at her questioningly and he sees that traitorous tears have escaped her eyes.
"Think of it, Harry. There are thirteen of you, if one gets away the Austrians will be furious, but you are no Hungarian, they will still have the others to get revenge on. However, what happens if all of them escape? Every Austrian soldier will be in Hungary in no time killing civilians, little children. These twelve will die as heroes, they will be known as the Martyrs of Arad, every Hungarian people will know their names," she says tearfully and a small smile appears on his face as he wipes of her tears.
"Then maybe, those future Hungarian children will know the name of Harry Potter as a martyr too, because I cannot survive as coward. It's not a decision I have to make," he answers her and she starts crying even more. "Shh, it's okay, Gin."
"I just wish, that Austria has never conquered Hungary, I just wish this whole revolution and war has never happened," she mutters and he strokes her back softly.
"But then I wouldn't have met you, Gin, the most beautiful Hungarian, no, the most beautiful woman on the whole World."
"Why did you have to become a general?" she asks again softly, not even hearing the compliment. He plays with her red locks and smiles at her weakly.
"You know that I was asked – and I thought, I thought that with my magical ability I might be able to help the Hungarians getting back what is theirs, what is yours, Ginny. After I have met you, it was just about you. You have lost everything; your whole family has lost everything just because another country thought that their own land is not big enough. You should have lived in luxury and not poverty," he tells her and she nods hesitantly.
"You thought that I was a Muggle, and you still wanted me."
"I would want you in every reality, in every World, Gin," he agrees and she chuckles.
"I can save you, Harry. We can leave Hungary, we can go anywhere, back to England where you are from or... or even America. We can be together; we can get married and live a normal magical life. Our children could even go to Hogwarts as you did," she suggests and he just shakes his head, not even questioning her how she knows where he learnt.
"I cannot be a coward, Ginny. I was in Gryffindor, in the house of the brave ones. I will want to die as a true one," he tells her and she starts crying again.
"I... I will not let them kill you – it is... not possible," she says. "Enough blood was already shed."
"Hungary will be free one day, but until then more blood will be shed – mine has to be too."
"What is freedom, if it means losing love?" she questions him. "You death won't help freeing Hungary, your life might. The Austrians have conquered Hungary, now it is part of the Empire, we have lost the war, but it is not the end. It's not the end for us, Harry. I have just got you."
"It is okay, Gin. Everything is going to be alright," Harry says.
"Yes it is going to be alright," she says suddenly and firmly, surprising him. She looks in his mesmerizing green eyes and with a skilful movement she points her wand at him.
"Stupefy," she mutters and Harry is hit by the spell.
He might not want to be saved, but she will not let him be killed either.
Not now, not ever.
