Chapter two: Do I really want to do this?
Author's note: It's been…. Years since I've worked on fanfiction. Sorry! I got carried away with college life! I wonder if anybody is still reading this… ^^; The first chapter has been reedited so… read that first. Oh I forgot to mention, this all takes place before the Varia arc.
The first thing that popped into Mioh's mind when he woke up was that he had the WEIRDEST dream. Men in black show up at his house looking for him, and his mom casually telling Mioh that his dad was part of a mafia. But once he opened his eyes and let himself adjust to the suddenly bright lights of his living room, looking around Mioh found that the weird dream wasn't a dream at all. He saw himself staring back at the faces of the men and his mom. Mioh shot up as fast as humanly possible his mind working at 100 miles per hour, going through what just happened moments prior to his faint spell. Once his mind caught up with this information, a lump formed in Mioh's throat. For the first time in Mioh's life, he felt absolutely… un-normal.
"Dad's a WHAT?!" He all but screamed, momentarily hating himself as his vision blacked out, most likely from getting up too fast, but he ignored it. "Please tell me you're joking." He looked at the men in suits sitting on the couch across from him before turning back to his mother, uneasily. His mother sensed his unease and politely spoke to the intimidating group.
"Could you please excuse us for a moment? It seems my son has a lot of questions needed to be answered!" she all but giggled. Who Mioh thought of as the leader of the men, nodded.
"Of course, Ura-sama! We'll be guarding the front and back entrance!" Mioh sweat dropped. They'll most likely scare the neighbors into calling the police… Mioh watched them leave and once the front and back doors were closed, Mioh looked at his mom.
"Mom… PLEASE tell me this is a gimmick and those guys who were here moments before are your friends, and you all decided to pull a prank on me." He might be in denial right now, but normally when your mom tells you last minute information like THIS, it had to be a joke. NORMALLY. But apparently that wasn't the case his mom smiled and responded.
"Do I look like the type who usually jokes around, Mioh?" 'Yes.' Mioh thought to himself. But seeing the serious glint in his mom's eyes, he realized this wasn't a well thought out prank.
"But… sending me to Italy…?! That has to be a joke!"
"This is no joke, dearie! You're going to Italy and living with your father! Isn't that exciting?" She squealed as she clasped her hands together. "Oh I bet it's just what you always wanted to! I mean, you always tell me that you had wanted to meet your father and now you get to have some father to son bonding with him!" Mioh sighed exasperated and pinched the space between his eyes.
"I know I did… but not under these circumstances! I mean... Or course I want to meet my father! I never saw him once in my life and would like to get to know him. I really do." Mioh replied honestly. "But flying half way across the world, giving up my life and education, and dropping out of my friends lives is just a little too extreme for me!" He tried to reason. Okay maybe halfway around the world was an over-exaggeration on his part.
"Italy is only a few hours away, sweetie!" His mother reasoned. Mioh looked away. "I-I know that! I was exaggerating a bit! But what about my life here? My education here? My friends here? I can't drop all of that just to fly to some foreign land that I don't even know how to speak the language of and spend who knows how many years there!" His mom smiled as if she had all the answers. She probably cooked up all the answers to each dilemma last night or something to eradicate any issues Mioh had with this "foolproof" plan, knowing how difficult Mioh was when you wanted to change his mind on something.
"You're not dropping your life though! You're advancing it even more! Think of this as an adventure! An opportunity! Opportunities like this are very rare, and you should take them when you can! Take them for a wild ride!" She pumped her fist up energetically. Man… she's still such a child sometimes, talking about life as an adventure.
She continued with her reasoning. "And you don't have to worry about education! Your father is placing you in a school over in Italy! He and I made sure it was best suited for you when we discussed it over the phone!" She smiled at her son when he made no objections so far. "Plus, he said he'd do something about your zero knowledge of Italian ASAP and also give you a tutor for Italian!" Okay that could work... Mioh was always interested in learning another language. He completely aced English after all. It couldnt hurt to be trilingual, he figured. As much as he wanted to object, this was starting to sound like a sweeter deal to him. But…
"What about my friends? I'll have a hard time making friends over there because I don't speak Italian. And I don't want to drop things with my friends over here… I only have so many…" Probably just three. But they were still tight-knit; mostly because he tutored them when they were younger.
His mom blinked. "You and your friends can still keep contact, can't you!" Mioh sighed.
"Yea… I guess, that could work." How about writing letters to each other? Your dad can also provide you with airplane tickets for any holiday or vacation you want to come home by to hang out with your friends and visit your sweet mommy and your darling brother!" Mioh raised an eyebrow.
"So you're not going... Are you sure you're not kicking me out?" It kind of feels like it. His mom waved her hands, gasping at the accusation. "Oh don't be silly! I would never try to get rid of such a good son like you! But, I think it's high time you and your father spend some time together. I've had you for 17 years of your life, and your poor father hasn't seen you since you're birth and is far too busy to come back on a timely basis!" Mioh frowned.
"Why don't you and Hiro want to go as well?" he asked. His mother smiled sadly and shook her head. "Your dad doesnt want to risk me or your little brother since the mafia is dangerous obviously! But you're old enough to take care of yourself and taking care of one person is easier than taking care of three!" Mioh slouched over in defeat. "A-Are you serious? Why send me someplace dangerous!?" His mom just smiled. "I know you can take care of yourself!"
"This seems so suicidal." Mioh mumbled to himself, but his mother didn't hear him. She smiled at him.
"So what do you think? The benefits certainly outweigh the risk! Just think! Being fluent in Italian, English, Japanese… studying oversees, opportunity to be with your father. And a more interesting life!" Mioh had to admit it sounded tempting. Mioh sighed in defeat.
"I'll… Can I think about it?" he asked. His mom smiled.
"Go ahead! You have as long as you want to think about it! After all, the plane in which they'll take you back in is owned by the mafia anyway! They'll give you a few days to work things out!" Mioh really wished she didn't say mafia. It made him uneasy. Mioh got up. "I'm… going to go rest in my room."
As he went upstairs, he heard his mom calling the men back in for tea and a discussion, and something about them staying at the nearest hotel for a few days as Mioh made his decision.
