When Chakotay arrived on the bridge for his morning shift he greeted Janeway Kim, and Baytart. "Where's Tuvok? Where's Paris?" he asked Janeway as he sat down.
"Tuvok will be here shortly," Janeway replied. "I ask him to collate the away mission reports."
"And Paris?"
"Does he have a shift this morning?" The Captain asked. "I thought he was on the away team that got back last night?"
"The Captain is right, Commander." Harry Kim confirmed. "Tom and I were both on the away mission. Don't worry, I still got a decent 5 hours sleep. I was out as soon as my head hit the pillow."
"I wonder how much sleep Tom got!" Janeway said, "He was still working on the supplies inventories in the mess hall at two hundred hours.
"Paris was on the most recent away mission? I was sure he was on the one before that." Chakotay was confused.
"There were three trips to the planet," Harry reminded him. "Maybe he was on the first and the third?"
"Maybe." The Commander acknowledged. "I thought I only rostered him on for the second one."
"The last I saw of Tom," Janeway continued, "he finally stopped working long enough to take a bite of pie - it must have been cold by that time – only to realise it was made of Leola Root. He didn't look happy, I can tell you!"
"Leola Root Pie?" Chakotay asked in surprise.
Janeway was amused. "Don't get too excited Commander. This latest variation of Neelix's still tastes just as bad. I needed the same amount of coffee to wash it down."
"Really?" Harry Kim asked. "That pie was made from Leola Root? I thought it was delicious! Who'd have thought that was possible, huh?"
"Woah!" Chakotay turned to Harry, as though he'd seen a ghost. "What did you say Ensign?"
"I said the Leola Root pie was delicious!"
"It's hard to believe, I know," Janeway agreed, interrupting Kim. "But aren't you overreacting a little, Commander?"
Chakotay turned back to the Captain.
"Is something wrong?" Janeway asked him.
"Déjà vu," Chakotay explained. "Haven't we had this exact same conversation before?"
Janeway and Harry Kim shook their heads. "I think I'd remember liking Leola Root," Harry said.
"Are you feeling all right?" Janeway asked Chakotay with concern. "Do you want to go to sickbay?"
"No, no, I feel fine, it's nothing like that." Chakotay shook his head. He had a bad feeling, like a dark cloud hovering, but he couldn't place it. Just then, he heard the turbolift open. Maybe this was Paris arriving. He turned.
Tuvok stepped onto the bridge. "Here are the reports from the three away missions. We now have sufficient supplies to last several months."
"Excellent work Tuvok!" Janeway congratulated him.
"There is one thing I must chase up after this shift, however."
"Yes?" the Captain asked.
"One of the phasers is missing."
"Missing?" Janeway looked up. "What do you mean?"
"It seems that a crewmember from one of the recent away missions has not returned their phaser upon returning to Voyager. It may have been accidental. I shall chase the matter up as soon as this bridge shift finishes."
"I'm sure it's fine. Everything else seems to be in order. Thank you Tuvok."
"You are welcome Captain."
Chakotay had been listening to their conversation with a growing feeling of dread. "What's the stardate?" he asked.
"Today is Star Date 48959," Tuvok told him. It was the stardate Tom had commited suicide in the alternate universe.
"Are you alright, Chakotay?" Janeway asked. "You look as though you've seen a ghost."
"I have to go," Chakotay said before he sped to the turbolift and left the bridge.
