Disclaimer: I do not own any part of Rizzoli & Isles. The characters belong to Tess Gerritsen, Jan Nash, Janet Tamaro, and TNT. I am in no way profiting from this. It's just for fun.
Thank you so much to those who read, reviewed, followed and favorited. Glad you're enjoying it so far! I know some stuff may seem confusing, but as promised in the first chapter I will clear things up as the story goes along. So stick with me. :)
And for those that have seen the Terminator movies, you may have some predictions. I did say there was some similarities, and some differences. You'll just have to stick around too, if you wanna know what happens. ;)
Time Between Us Ch. 2
Boston Cambridge University, 2015
The sun shined brightly on 23 year old college student Maura Isles as she walked through campus. Her fellow classmate and good friend, Emily, walked with her. Teasing her about how many books she's carrying.
Maura just laughed it off, knowing she wasn't being mean. "It's all going to pay off someday. I would really like to do something meaningful with my life."
"Yeah, me too..." Emily agreed as a light breeze just picked up, her hair flying into her face. "So what career do you think you want?"
"I'm not sure..." Maura shrugged, then gestured to her medical books. "Obviously something in the medicine. I've always been interested in that and science ever since I was little. I've been fond of computers, as well."
"Hey, at least you have an idea of what you wanna do. I have no idea. I haven't even majored in anything yet."
"Well, you've got some time to figure that out. You're still a sophomore."
Emily sighed at this. "Yeah... But I'm gonna miss you in a few months when you graduate. BCU won't be the same without ya."
Another student rushed by, almost making Maura drop her stack of books.
"Watch it, asshole!" Emily shouted, then motioned for Maura to continue what she was saying.
"Thanks, Em. I promise I'll visit every chance I get."
Her friend bumped shoulders with the young blonde. "I'll hold you to that. See ya later, Maura."
"Bye, Emily." She smiled before parting ways, the two friends going to their classes across campus from one another.
As Maura reached the door, she struggled to open it, but managed to get it without dropping anything.
'Maybe I shouldn't have left my school bag in my dorm room...' She laughed to herself as she hurried down the hall before she was late to class. 'Not on my permanent record.'
Later that night...
A small stray cat was drinking from a muddy puddle when its hair suddenly shot right up, sensing fear. He looked ahead of him and saw wind picking up, sending bits of trash flying around. The temperature dropped, and a spark of electricity appeared, followed by several more until it caused a trash can to fall over. Small bits of fire flew in every direction, which sent the poor stray running in the opposite direction, screaming as he did.
"Son of a bitch!" Jane yelled as she lied flat on the wet ground beneath her. She feels as though body is on fire, cuts and scrapes littered her body. The time traveling soldier gritted her teeth, waiting for the unbearable pain to pass. Cold rain hit her body, stinging it. The small bits of fire from the electricity was put out by the water, but it did nothing to ease Jane's burning.
After catching her breath when the pain finally subsided, Jane opened her eyes to take in her surroundings. She's in a dark alley filled with trash and other disgusting things she doesn't want to take the time to identify. The horrid smell entered her nose without permission, nearly making her vomit.
Jane tried to stand, but stumbled, luckily catching herself on the side of a building.
"Ugh... I don't feel so good." She then threw up what was left of her dinner and the little bit of scotch she shared with Cavanaugh. Jane wiped the side of her mouth and saw a shadowy figure approaching from a dimly lit street.
A man's voice, full of concern, asked "Whoa, are you ok there Vanilla? Need me to call for help?"
The Resistance fighter instinctively covered her chest, hiding the rest behind a rusty old trash can. Neither knew it was partially melted from the extinguished fire.
"Um, yeah... Must've had too much to drink I guess." Jane's nausea finally passed, giving her a chance to get her bearings. "Can you tell me the date?"
The man took a cautious step closer. "Maybe you should lay off the liquor..."
"I'm serious. What's the date?"
"March 6th."
Jane, still reeling from the burning sensation the covered her body, asked "What year?"
He gave her a confused look. "Um... 2015. Wow, you must've been loaded last night." When the stranger saw Jane shivering from the rain, he took off his coat. "Here, take this. My place is just around the corner, I can get you some pants too."
She was wary to trust him, and it showed.
"Oh, my bad Vanilla. Where are my manners?" He shook his head in embarrassment. "My name is Rondo, at your service."
Jane chuckled when Rondo bowed, and went to introduce herself as well.
"I'm Jane... I'm actually in a hurry, I need to get out of here."
"Yeah, of course you should. Before you get sick from staying out in the rain so long like this." He approached her, and she stiffened before taking a defensive step back. Rondo put his hands up. "I ain't gonna hurt you, just wanna give you my coat, ok? Here, I'll just hand it to you from here. Alright?"
She nodded and reached her hand out to accept the thick coat, and found warm relief the moment she slipped it on. It was worn and smelled of cigarettes, but she didn't care. She was just grateful to be warm, and that it was long enough to cover most of her bottom.
"Thanks."
"No problem."
Jane zipped it up. "Pretty warm."
Rondo grinned at her. "Yup..." He gestured to the end of the alley. "Right this way. You can wait outside of my apartment if you want. Make you feel safer."
The grateful young woman nodded her head, then began to follow the kind stranger.
'Holy shit! It actually worked! Then that means... Fuck. I gotta find her fast...'
Maura was a hundred or so pages into a textbook when her roommate, Riley, bursted in loudly. The blonde looked up and greeted her friend, who plopped ungracefully onto the bed.
"You're still studying?!" Riley asked in total disbelief. Well not total, she half expected this kind of thing from Maura. "You need to take a break. When's the last time you went out for a drink?"
Maura thought for a moment. "I can't remember."
"Come with me to the Robber, we'll toss a few back." She could tell Maura was about to decline, but Riley was insistent. "It's Friday, loosen up. We deserve it after that huge test anyway."
"I suppose you're right." Riley smiled brightly when Maura shut her book, who then placed it neatly on her shelf above her bed.
"Yes!" She jumped up and grabbed her jacket and waited for her friend to do the same. After getting their wallets, the two left for the bar.
"I so need to get laid tonight. Think there'll be any cute guys there?"
"Never know." Maura laughed, but it died off when she felt someone following her. She turned her head to glance behind them, but saw nothing.
"What?" Riley asked, looking where Maura was.
"Um... Nothing. I just thought I heard something." Maura shrugged it off and kept walking. The bar was now in sight so she felt better.
When they finally entered, Maura and Riley saw that the Dirty Robber was packed.
"Looks like every college student in town thought it be good to come here..." Riley huffed in annoyance. "I'll find us a seat. I dragged you out, so first round is on me."
"No, let me get the first round. You invited me."
"Exactly, I want you to have a good time for once so I'm buying... Oh, there's two spots at the bar. Come on."
The pair took the spots, and the bartender made his way over.
"What can I get you two ladies?"
"Two shots of tequila, please." Riley offered a devious smile.
Maura inwardly rolled her eyes, she knew that was just beginning of the flirting. It's not like she had to try though, Riley was a very beautiful woman. Men, and even a few woman on occasion, threw themselves at her.
"Coming right up." He reached underneath the counter and placed two small glasses in front of the young women, then filled it with the requested liquor.
They downed the shots and turned around to survey the crowded bar.
"Wanna shoot some pool?" Riley cocked her head towards the table, leaning on the counter with both elbows, fully relaxed. "Bet those guys would love it."
Maura shrugged her shoulders and followed Riley to the pool table, and introduced themselves.
"Hey, boys... I'm Riley, this is Maura." The beautiful dark skinned woman pointed at her friend with a thumb. "Mind if we join?"
The men looked at one another and grinned. "We'd love it."
"I'm Chad, and that's Marcus."
Riley walked over to Chad and put her hand on his chest, her index finger danced across his tight shirt, one that showed off his muscles.
"I'm afraid I don't know how to play very well... Think you could show me? Help me hold the stick right?" Riley winked, and Maura could barely contain her laughter. It was shameless flirtation, but whatever worked for her. It obviously did, because Chad looked as if he wanted to tear her clothes off right then and there.
Maura went to stand by Marcus, who seemed to be the more quiet and reserved one than his friend.
"$10 says they're gonna try and do it in the bathroom." The tall black haired man half joked, smiling at his buddy, who had his hands all over Riley.
"You're on." Maura eagerly accepted the bet.
Riley leant down over the table, Chad's arms over hers, helping her aim the stick.
"Just so you know, I'm not gonna be all flirty like that with you. I'm a more respectable person than that."
"Thanks, Marcus. You're a true gentleman."
Marcus just laughed and explained "Well, that and I'm gay. You're beautiful, just not my type."
Chad and Riley's turn was over, and Maura took her place. When she leant down to hit the striped balls, she saw a man staring at her from across the room. He winked at Maura, who smirked in response.
Focusing back on the game, Maura managed to pocket 4 balls. The game moved rather quickly, each of them getting drunker, since between turns they took a couple shots of whiskey.
In the end, Chad pocketed the 8 ball, winning the game. Maura didn't want to play again, so she let Riley rack the balls up again with the man she assumed she'd be sleeping with that night.
Maura sat back down at the bar, ordering a glass of wine, having enough of the hard liquor for one night. The handsome man who winked at her earlier sat next to her and told the bartender his order. "Gin and tonic for me."
"Hello." Maura smiled at the stranger.
"Hey, I'm Dennis."
"Maura." She introduced as she shook his hand, silently taking notice of his strong grip. "Nice to meet you."
"I couldn't help noticing you play earlier, you're pretty good."
"Thank you, but I think it was just beginner's luck. Do you play?"
"Not really. I'm into more vigorous activities..." He winked again, causing Maura to blush.
"So what do you do in your spare time besides hitting on women at bars?"
Dennis laughed, knowing it wasn't a serious jab at him. "I like hunting for sport, it's a big hobby of mine."
"You like going after things, getting what you want..." Maura didn't know what came over her, maybe it had something to do with all of the alcohol swimming around her brain.
"You could say that, yeah." Dennis answered cryptically. "So, are you in college?"
"Yes, I attend BCU. I'm a senior."
"No kidding... What a coincidence, me too! What do you study?" He leaned in closer, seemingly intrigued with the beauty before him.
"Science and medicine." She took a sip of her drink, then asked "How about you?"
"Biomechanics... I really appreciate the human anatomy, and may I say you've got quite a body."
"Thank you." Maura blushed once again at the flirtatious yet polite comment.
"So..." Dennis' dark eyes raked over Maura's body. "Wanna get out of here, take this fun elsewhere?"
Just then, Riley walked over from her game and drunkenly whispered in Maura's ear. "You should totally hook up with him, he's hot. I'm definitely going back to Chad's, so I'll see you in the morning! Text me later."
Dennis looked at her with hopeful eyes and a charming smile, and Maura caved. She wasn't the type of person to have random bar hook ups or one night stands especially with someone she just met, but didn't care tonight.
"Oh, what the hell?" Maura got off the bar stool and linked arms with Dennis, who seemed to be very happy. "Your dorm or mine?"
Jane had been walking around BCU's large campus for an hour looking for Maura.
"Damn it, where the hell is she?" Jane wondered aloud as she bumped into a student. "Sorry... Do you happen to know a Maura Isles? I need to find her."
"Who are you?"
"I'm her cousin, Jane. I've been in the Army for years and finally got leave. I wanted to surprise her."
"Oh, that sounds so nice!" The girl gushed. "She might be in her dorm, it's on the third floor on the east side. Last one down the hall, room 334."
"Thanks." Jane said, taking off without waiting for a response. She went to the dorm, but Maura isn't there.
"Fuck!"
She stormed out of the room, brushing past several students before finally stopping to ask one of them where Maura is.
The student she happened to stop was Emily, Maura's good friend.
"She might be at the Dirty Robber still, her and Riley wanted to have some fun after studying all day." Emily happily informed, after Jane gave her the fake Army story. It wasn't entirely a lie, Jane is technically a soldier.
After getting directions to the bar, Jane took off once again, at a much faster pace. She got there within a half an hour, too long in her opinion. Jane just hoped she wasn't too late.
As she turned around the corner, Jane spotted the familiar honey blonde hair. Maura isn't alone, there's a man walking beside her.
A woman walked by them, who had a small dog in her arms. The furry animal took one look at Dennis and started to bark furiously, trying to wiggle itself out of its owner's grasp.
"Shit!" Jane cursed, then pulled a gun out from her jacket. She took it from Rondo's house after requesting to use the bathroom, part of her felt bad for stealing from a kind stranger but she had a mission to complete. Chances are he would be a casualty from the war anyway, a thought that made her feel even more guilty.
She aimed the weapon at the man, or machine rather, knowing full well it's a terminator, and shoots it in the back several times.
Maura screamed in horror when Dennis fell to the ground, blood seeping out of his leather jacket. She turned around and saw the shooter running straight towards her, then back at Dennis.
"Oh my god!" She remained frozen on the spot, too scared to move.
Jane reached them, and proceeded to empty the rest of the bullets into Dennis' head and back. She looked at the pale and sickened future doctor and demanded "Come with me if you want to live."
"Pl-please ddd-don't hurt me, ple-please." Maura stuttered out in fear.
Jane just grabbed her hand and started running, practically dragging Maura along with her.
"Come on, let's go."
"No!" Maura finally got a hold of her senses, and tried to free herself from Jane's strong grip. But the woman refused to let go. "Get off of me, you monster!"
"I'm not the monster." Jane replied as they got to the corner, several yards away from Dennis' prone body. "He is, just look."
Confused, and still utterly terrified, Maura did as she was told.
Dennis slowly got up, scaring away the few bar patrons that heard the shots and rushed outside to see what happened.
"We have to move. Now."
Maura is so horrified by seeing a man get shot that many times and still be alive, so she listened to Jane and ran with her as fast as she could.
Oh crap, Dennis Rockmond is the terminator?! I wonder what's gonna happen next. Follow me on Twitter, XBgamer94, for updates about when the next chapter will be. Thanks for reading. :)
