CHAPTER TWO: SMUDGE
Rusty stepped out the door. He had been waiting for what seemed like ages for his Twolegs to open the door, so that he could escape to the wild. Now that the door was finally open, he took the chance to escape.
As soon as he was out the door, Rusty looked around for Smudge, his friend, because he didn't want Smudge to worry about him mysteriously disappearing. For a few moments, Rusty couldn't find him. He looked at the line of trees marking the border between Twolegplace and the forest. Could Smudge have also decided to go into the wild?
Just then a familiar voice made Rusty jump. He turned around, welcomed Smudge and told Smudge what he was going to do.
Smudge purred and bumped his head against Rusty's shoulder. "Rusty, why do you want to go out into the wild. It's scary out there. There are wild cats out there and they're very dangerous." Smudge's black tail trembled, the white tip appearing almost to vibrate like a Twoleg's monster. "I've heard stories about them guarding their territories and attacking anyone who strays in the wrong place. I don't want that to happen to you."
Rusty laughed. "Smudge, you know I can take care of myself. Remember the kittypet that showed up here looking for a fight? I sent him packing, didn't I?"
Smudge dipped his head. "Yeah, you beat a kittypet. But these wild cats different. I've heard of them really hurting kittypets."
Rusty swished his orange tail. "I'm not weak."
Smudge backed up. "No, you're not. But – well, I'd miss you if you left. It would be terribly dull here. Who would hang out with? The only other friend I've ever had visited the cutter and now he's gone crazy. He lays around, talking to himself."
Rusty watched Smudge for a moment. "It's all the more reason to go. My Twoleg might take me to the cutter. I don't want that to happen to me."
Smudge eyed him. "You think your Twoleg has cutter plans? Yikes." He stared back at Rusty's bright yellow house, light spilling cheerily from the room with the food. "Well, alright, Rusty. Just come back by sunset. Don't wander too far. I need to know that you're okay."
Rusty didn't need Smudge's approval, but it was encouraging. He gave a shoulder bump to his friend. "Bye, Smudge. See you at sunset."
Rusty walked away toward the trees, sniffing the evergreen air and thinking about what sort of creatures he might find in the forest and what sort of danger he might encounter there.
