I felt something cool against my face, cool like tile. As I opened my eyes and lifted my head too look around, my body throbbed in immense pain. I must have landed pretty hard. I stood up slowly; the first thing I noticed was that my ballet flats were missing. I looked around, but they weren't anywhere to be found. I decided to shake it off and pay attention to where I was. The pink tile was cool against the bottoms of my feet, but the thing that really got my attention was the walls; they weren't really walls. They were chalk boards; enormous chalk boards. Pink chalk traced pictures of tulips, red chalked traced pictures of red robins with yellow beaks. The blue chalk, however, traced ongoing arrows.
I followed them for a few steps, and then stopped. Something seemed so familiar about this place, but I wasn't remembering anything. I didn't want to keep walking forward, but I felt like something was calling me; needing me. So I continued to walk down the hall, following the arrows. Forward.
Left.
Left.
Right.
Left.
Right.
I stopped walking, feeling a second sensation of déjà vu. Were these the same pink tulips; same birds? I felt like I was just going in circles, and I wasn't even sure where I was or who I was even looking for! Gritting my teeth and balling my fists, I stomped the tile, hard. All of a sudden, the piece of tile I stomped on gave way and my foot fell right through it. I bent down on my knees and looked into the square shaped hole. There was nothing down there; just an empty black hole. I seemed to be running into a lot of those today.
I looked closer and deeper into the abyss, my eyes straining to see a bottom. I leaned my head further down, my hair falling in front of my face. There was air coming from this hole, wind even because it felt so strong. It brought forth a scent of something familiar, almost resembling a musty attic mixed with freshly washed clothes. As I was about to pull back another tile to see more, I felt someone's hands on my back, pushing me forward and into the floor. I let out a short scream as I began to fall fast, but then relaxed. My speed slowed, and for a moment, I began to think I was actually floating.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw blue lights all around. I turned my head to look at them; no they weren't lights, they were rose petals. They were bright blue rose petals. Instead of panicking, I was so relaxed. I felt safe in the presence of these rose petals, but I also felt a sense of loss; of my memory, of someone truly important. Looking around, I noticed that the darkness beginning to fade. Suddenly, I landed on my feet and I started noticing other things around me. The sky was visible, dark rain clouds ahead, and I was in the middle of an empty road that ran straight. The rose petals fell in front of me; forming a path.
I began to walk forward again, following the path laid before me. I felt like I had been walking for hours when I finally came upon a large brick building. The petals stopped at the red velvet rope that hung low across the door. I approached it quietly, feeling the wind cool on my face and blowing my hair behind me. The scent filled my nostrils again making me feel calm. I reached for the door and pushed it open, stepping under the velvet rope. I took a few steps inside before the door slammed shut behind me.
