Penny continued to stare down at her phone. She couldn't believe that Leonard had actually called her back.
She recalled his number, and to her surprise, the call went through and didn't ask for her to leave a message.
"Leonard, you have no idea how happy I am that you called, I've been scared out of my mind." She said down the phone, only to have a silence after. "Hello?"
"Who is this?" A man's voice came through and Penny realized it wasn't Leonard.
"I'm Penny. Who the hell are you, and how do you have my husband's phone?" She angrily asked, crushed that it wasn't Leonard.
"Hi, Penny. My name's Josh, and I've been doing volunteer work after the earthquake. I found this phone in the rubble of a building that collapsed."
"Do you know if my husband's okay?" She asked.
"I'm sorry, ma'am. There weren't any live bodies in the wreckage. All living victims are at any hospital." He replied.
"Were there any dead bodies-" She began.
"Many ma'am." Josh rudely interrupted.
"You didn't let me finish." She gritted, agitated with the guy on the other end.
"Sorry, please continue."
Penny then gave a description of Leonard to Josh, who denied seeing anyone like that.
"So, you didn't see any dead people who fit that description?" She asked, her voice perked up.
"No. Is that a good thing?" Josh wondered.
"Yes! It really is!" She squealed, before remembering that it was the middle of the night and that there were her parents asleep in a room upstairs. "I've got to go, Josh, but please keep me updated if anything changes."
"I sure will, ma'am."
Just as Penny was going to hang up and go back up to bed, she spoke again to the guy on the other end, "And if anything changes and you need to call me, don't call me 'ma'am'." She mentioned, disliking the word, before hanging up.
Penny stood, smiling, in the middle of the living room. Although there was a chance of her husband being in the hospital due to injuries, she was more relaxed knowing that Leonard didn't die during the collapsing of the building.
Penny got herself back upstairs, and back into bed, still smiling. She knew that now she couldn't try and call Leonard because another person had his phone. But all she could think about right now was the fact that her husband wasn't dead, and that she might be able to see him when she could get a flight back home.
But without trying, Penny immediately fell asleep again, having woken up from the nightmare not that long before.
Penny was sitting next to her dad, them both watching the news. Twelve hours after the earthquake, the death toll was at five-hundred-and-seventeen.
"I'm guessing the end result will be surprising." Her father said, looking straight ahead.
She agreed, before looking down at the phone she had wanted to throw out the windows multiple times in the past hour.
"Everything okay, Slugger?" He asked, looking strangely at her.
"Yeah, it just I can't seem to find any places that could get me a flight home." She sighed.
All morning, Penny had been trying desperately to get a flight back to California, but everywhere she looked, all the flights were canceled or delayed.
"That's cause there isn't going to be flights one day after. They probably won't do any flights until the damage is cleared up." Randal pointed out, whilst eating an early morning snack.
"Shut up, Randal. I didn't tell you." Penny snapped, only because her brother hadn't been a great help since she first heard of the earthquake.
"Aye, Penny. Your brother's right, surprisingly." Her father said, which caused Penny to giggle and Randal to feel insulted. "There won't be any flights for a while. Not while there are still aftershocks going on."
Although she hated to admit it, her brother was right.
Twelve hours later, the aftershocks were still coming strong, reaching a 4 or higher in magnitude. There would be rare occasions where they would get below a 2, but they'd always climb back up again. And there wouldn't be any flights back to California like that.
"Sorry, Randal. I guess I'm a little nervous." She apologized.
"I get that. Your husband was in a life killing earthquake and now you can't get hold of him."
"And you're not helping!" Her father butted in, gritting over at him.
Penny knew he wasn't being a jerk, and that he was just trying to cheer her up by getting into trouble. As that was one way Randal would cheer her up when they were both younger.
Her phone buzzed, and much to her father's surprise, she didn't look at it straight away.
"Aren't you going to get that?" It could be Leonard."
"It's not possible," Penny said, not moving her eyes away from the TV. "A guy had Leonard's phone. He seems like a nice guy, but definitely interrupts a lot!" She added.
"Wait... A guy has Leonard's phone? How?" Her father wondered, worried about his son-in-law.
"Oh, he's a volunteer, looking around the wrecked buildings. He found his phone in the rubble of one." She answered. "We had a conversation last night. His name's Josh, but as I said, he talks way too much." She blabbered.
Her dad shut her up before she could continue. He pointed to the TV as they began showing pictures of the collapsed buildings. About the third one in showed the grocery store that Leonard was in at the time. There wasn't anything left of it. The whole thing was just a pile of rubble.
"Leonard was in there." She blurted.
"Oh, then he's either in hospital, or he's seriously dead," Randal mentioned.
"Okay, why don't you leave? You're really not helping." Her father gritted again.
Penny was silent. Her father asked if she was okay. She picked up her phone and saw a text from Bernadette.
Have you seen the pictures of some of the places here? I'm amazed the house didn't collapse. :O Penny slightly laughed, before replying.
Yeah, so am I :D How's everyone else? She then waited, as it dawned on her that Bernadette didn't know either.
The reply came through two minutes later,
Raj is on watch at a hospital, Amy is doing okay and is by the side of Sheldon, who hasn't woken up (He isn't dead)
Oh God! What's wrong with Sheldon?
According to Amy, he's in a medically induced coma, but should be out of it any day now.
Wow! Why was he put like that?
To shut him up. :D
Really?
No! I don't actually know why.
Penny put her phone down, before looking strangely at her dad, only because he was doing it with her,
"What's wrong?" She asked, wondering why he looked so odd.
"Why did you go all quiet? Did you see anything?" He questioned.
"No... Why, do you think I did?"
"No. It's just the pictures came up, and Randal said something stupid, about either being in a hospital or dead, and you went all quiet."
"Oh! Thanks, dad!" Penny smirked, still not explaining what was going on.
Penny jumped up off the couch, grabbing her phone before leaving her brother and father hanging on what was going on.
She ran out of the living room, before looking through her contacts. Remembering her conversation with Josh the night before, she had been told that no dead people fitting the description of Leonard had been found in the rubble of any of the buildings. The remembering her brothers comment about being in a hospital or dead, she ruled off the option of him being dead. She had then decided to call every hospital in the surrounding area of where he was when the earthquake had struck.
First was their usual hospital in Pasadena.
"Hello, Huntington hospital, how may I assist you today?"
"Hi. I'm looking for my husband. He was in the earthquake yesterday, and I'm just worried to know if he's okay."
"Well, I'm happy to help you find him. Can I get a description?"
"Sure." She replied, before hesitating. "He's got short, dark hair that can sometimes get curly, especially at the back. He's got black frame glasses and he's about five-foot-five, even though he says he's five-foot-eight." She explained.
"What clothes was he wearing?"
Penny stopped. Having been in Nebraska, she had no idea. "I'm sorry, I don't know. I didn't see him on the day." She sighed.
"Okay," The person on the other end said, before taking a deep breath in. "What's your husband's name?" They asked.
"Leonard. Leonard Hofstadter." She replied, before spelling it out for them.
The person on the other end was quiet for only a moment, but for Penny, it felt like too long. She could hear muffled tapping against a keyboard in the background.
"I'm sorry." The voice said again, breaking the slight silence. "Using the name that you gave me, the last time anybody came in with that name was a month ago. They haven't arrived or been here since,"
"Oh, okay. Thank you for your help." Penny sighed, before hanging up the phone.
She knew he had to be somewhere, and she knew that she wasn't one to give up. Not until she found him.
For the next two hours, she stayed on the line with another thirteen hospitals, using the same description. Each time had failed, and Penny was getting tired of getting the answer she wasn't looking for.
She called through to the last hospital that she had on her list. They asked the same questions in exactly the same order, and by then Penny knew exactly what to say off by heart.
"Hofstadter. How is that spelled?" They asked as Penny was slowly getting absolutely exhausted.
"H-o-f-s-t-a-d-t-e-r" She slowly replied.
"And Leonard is L-e-o-n-a-r-d, correct?
"Yes." She sighed, holding herself back from yelling. 'How many different ways are there of spelling Leonard?' She thought.
Silence hit the phone line again as the sound of typing and clicking of the keyboard and mouse could be heard in the background.
"Okay Misses Hofstadter. Do you want the good or bad news first?"
Dun Dun Dun! :D
*Please don't hate me...*
