Five Senses

Smell

Rating: K

The scent of burning food reaches Katara just before the shouts do.

"Mom? Moooom!"

Exchanging a panicked look, both Aang and Katara dash from their bedroom to the kitchen. Muscles tense, the waterbender kicks the door open, believing herself prepared for anything.

Aang nearly crashes into her when she freezes.

Cups, plates, and bowls- all of which are Katara's finest Earth Kingdom china- are stacked haphazardly on the dining table. A baby Tenzin squirms in what appears to be a puddle of mango juice on the floor, and a three year old Bumi stands wide-eyed and dusted with flour by the stove with an overflowing bowl of lumpy pancake batter in his hands. And in the middle of everything, on a chair next to the stove, is a seven year old Kya with a half-melted spatula in her grip. A pan of indistinct blackened lumps smokes faintly behind her.

Kya grins weakly. "Happy Mother's Day?"
