They say freedom comes at a price. I never believed them until today.

The tree was twice my height and had vibrant orange and red leaves. The branches, made of dry, brittle bark, were twisted and perfect for climbing. As I ascended the knotted branches, I felt free. It was as if the top of the tree was the top of the world. I made the mistake of staying up too long, though, because I found myself unable to get down. As Father came outside, I attempted to hide, but his hawk-sharp eyes found me instantly.

"Alice!" he shouted. "Get down from that tree at once!" I tried and tried, but failed miserably. After 15 minutes, Father had to help me down. "Alice, this goes without saying, but you are no longer allowed outside without supervision."

"Yes, Father," I replied as he led me back inside the mansion.
