ABIGAIL
"And that concludes my presentation," Britney said, letting out a breath.
I snapped out of my dream. Breathing hard and sweat dripping down my forehead, I looked around. Everything was normal. No explosions, and Britney was just finishing her presentation.
Just a dream, just a dream. How did I fall asleep anyway? I've never done that before.
Mikey raised his hand.
"Yes Mikey?" Mrs. Phase asked, looking up from her notes.
"It's hot in here."
Everyone nodded.
Mrs. Phase turned on the fan and the air conditioner. I stared, thinking it might have been a coincidence. Dreams don't come true. Well, dreams about explosions in school at least.
I mentally slapped myself. Get ahold of yourself, Abigail. Mikey is always complaining about the temperature. This happens twice a week!
My pen ran out of ink, and I unzipped my pencil case. Or tried to. I yanked too hard, and the case's contents scattered all over the floor.
Britney and Deana snickered.
As I reached down to pick them up, I froze. I sat back in my seat. The same thing had happened in my dream! I started shaking again, just like before class started. I began having trouble breathing correctly.
"You okay?" Courtney was giving me a weird look as she handed me some of my pens.
I looked around.
Mikey was blowing bubbles into his smoothie. Deana threw an eraser at his face.
"Oh my god."
I saw Josh kicking my pens away.
"Oh no," I said as Courtney picked up my eraser.
Mrs. Phase was drawing the next name.
"Daniel, your turn. After Daniel-" Mrs. Phase started.
"Jonah." I shot up in my seat.
Mrs. Phase looked at the name, "Oh my, you have mind reading powers!"
My breath came out as hiccups, I was totally panicking, "The school's going to explode! It's going to explode! The classroom is going to collapse and we're all going to die!"
"What are you talking about?" Josh stared at me with disgust. "Explode?"
"Yes!" if I was right, it would only be a minute until the school goes up in flames.
"We have to get out of here!" I shrieked.
"What? What's wrong Abigail?" Carolyn asked.
"Dude, what's going on?" Mikey questioned.
"Yeah, what explosion?" Daniel looked concerned.
Mrs. Phase stared at me, "Do you need to see the nurse?"
"No! I saw it! I saw what's going to happen! The school's going to go down in a few seconds!"
No time to go down the stairs. I tried remembering the part of the school that hadn't caved in, or at least hadn't collapsed yet in my dream.
The end of the hallway, I realized. Near the bathrooms. I ran out the classroom, hoping enough people would follow me.
Sure enough, nearly the entire class had followed.
"Come on!" I yelled desperately.
"Abigail!" Jonah yelled. "You okay?"
"I'm fine now! But we're not going to be later!"
"Where are you going weirdo?" Britney yelled. She was holding her phone.
"Yeah!" Josh shouted.
"Abigail! What's wrong? Get back to class!" Mrs. Phase called.
"You rule Abigail!" Mikey yelled. "Skippin' class!"
Then the first explosion rocked the school.
Everyone froze.
"See?!" I yelled. "I told you!"
Mrs. Phase ran back to the classroom, probably to save the other students. "STAY PUT!"
"NO! Come back!" I yelled.
She ran into the classroom.
I led the rest of us to the end of the hallway. "In my dream, this part didn't collapse," I explained.
"YOU DID THIS!" Britney screeched. "Deana's in there! It's all your FAULT!"
Before anyone could retort, a girl turned the corner in front of us. She was wiping her hands on her shirt. She had probably been in the bathroom, "What the f*ck's going on?" she yelled to nobody in particular.
I yanked her back another explosion launched a large chunk of rock at her head.
Cassandra stared at the rock on the floor, "Terrorist attack?"
"Don't know," I replied shakily. "I had a dream, this part of the school didn't cave in. Or at least it was the last part to fall." I wiped my eyes as I stared at the fire raging on the second floor.
"This is insane!" Jacob looked around.
"How come I didn't have a dream of this?" Josh asked.
"Does it matter?" Courtney snapped.
Josh shrugged.
"Okay," Daniel said. "Okay," he muttered.
The floor shook, but didn't fall. The rest of the school did fall though. I saw many students and teachers out in the field, safe.
But then the basketball and volleyball court exploded as well, killing everyone there.
We were standing on the second floor, with the rest of the school covered in dust.
But we were alive.
As we waited for help to arrive, everyone asked me questions.
"How'd you know?"
"I don't know!" I answered for the hundreth time, "I saw it. I saw it happen. Then everything repeated. I-I think it was a dream. I saw everyone die..."
"How'd I die?" Jacob asked. "The ceiling?"
"You really want to know?"
"Uh huh," he looked enthusiastic.
"You got stabbed in the eye with a chair."
"Oh," his hand went to his eye.
"How did I die?" Jonah asked.
"Please, I don't want to talk about this anymore."
"Okay, sorry Abigail."
"It's okay."
Carolyn hugged me and patted my back.
The firefighters had finally arrived.
Four of them took two ladders and propped them up next to us. The rest of them put out the fire with large hoses.
I was closest to the first ladder, so I climbed down first and reached the bottom safely.
Britney reached the bottom with me.
Jacob and Mikey went down next.
As Daniel and Cassandra made their way down, a bird suddenly flew up to Carolyn, who was standing on the barrier of the second floor.
"Ah!" Carolyn waved her hand at it. It flew at her face indignantly, and she turned in a circle and covered her face. "Get it away! Get it AWAY!"
She backed towards the edge, swatting at the air with one hand and the other covering her face. The bird had already left, but she didn't know that.
"Stop!" Daniel shouted up to her. "You'll fall!"
Carolyn was too focused on getting rid of the bird that wasn't there to think about which direction she was heading. She thought the edge was in front of her, so she backed away even more.
Jonah lunged to her the moment she stepped off the edge.
She kept screaming all the way until she landed stomach-first onto a fire hydrant.
"Carolyn!" I sobbed.
"NO!" Jonah roared from the second floor. "CAROLYN!"
A paramedic from an ambulance rushed over to her and felt for a pulse. She looked at us with a grim face and shook her head.
Daniel turned me away from Carolyn and patted my back.
I hugged him fiercely, not noticing his cheeks getting really hot.
Jonah and Mikey came over and we did a group hug.
