I arrived to class late. Shoot. Forget about good first day impressions. I plopped into any seat and immediately regretted it. Gemma was sitting next to me, suddenly absorbed by her math textbook. I fished out a piece of paper and scribbled a note.

Hey, sorry about earlier today. I was being a jerk. Wanna hang out later, after school? Please, Gemma?

I slipped the note into her open hand and faced forward. I slanted a look at Gemma and almost laughed at her expression. She looked stunned. She scrawled something on the page and put the paper on my desk. YES! SHE SAID YES! I grinned at her and she smiled.

"Class, today we will be pairing you off with another person to be your math partner for the semester. One group will have three people in it, though," Mrs. Owens- out math teacher- explained.

"Ty, you will be paired with Gemma and Lindy," Uh no. I'm not spending a semester with Lindy. I caught Lindy's eye and saw she was staring at Gemma with disgust. I felt my hands clench into fists.

"Get with your partners, class,"

I walked over to Gemma and grabbed her hand. To my surprise she squeezed it. Lindy saw and scurried over.

"Ty! What are you doing?"

"Holding Gemma's hand,"

"Why, exactly?"

"Because I like her,"

My so-called confession rang through the room. Gemma's mouth dropped open, and Lindy screamed. Literally, screamed. Everyone started to whisper. I'm screwed
