Chapter II: The Reason
"I need princess Zelda inside this mirror. Make her slowly gain your trust and bring her to me, and you can be free from this mirror and the light won't hurt you ever again. You'll be free, forever." "I can truly be free, forever..?" Shadow Link lifted his head from his kneeling position, to meet with Vaati's eyes. "Yes, you have seven nights to win her trust and bring her to me. Conquer her; even make her fall for you if it's possible. But don't use force on her until she walks through the mirror. Got it?" Shadow Link stood up, and a wide grin formed on his face. "Yes lord Vaati. I'll bring her to you in the 8th night." An evil smile appeared on Vaati's face, and turned around. "Don't fail me Shadow, or there will be consequences." With just those words, he disappeared into a gust of wind. The shadow of Link was still grinning, he could not believe this. He was going to be free from this pitch black world, and he will no longer depend on the mirror for his safety and life. If the mirror breaks, he dies a long with it, just like that. He chuckled to himself, now surrounded by pure darkness. "Heh, how hard can it be to bring a single princess through the mirror? This will be piece of cake."
"Piece of cake, huh…?" he thought to himself. "…Damn, I think I was wrong…" said as he was sitting down, on a throne in the pitch black room. "How did I fall so low, having t-those 'feelings' for her? That's absurd!" he stopped talking for a minute, remembering Zelda's sweet scent, her soft skin, her blue orbs that reminded him of Lake Hyla, and those soft lips of hers… SMACK! "What is wrong with me..?" he said after he had smacked his face, leaving a bit of a red mark due to his hand. "I have no such feelings, I'm the shadow of a foolish hero!" he frowned once he remembered the hero of time. "…Link…" he said with disgust. He felt mad at him for being so blind and foolish to reject such beauty like Zelda. But at the same time he didn't have competition to win her heart; he can use Link's rejection to his advantage. His eyes started to shine at this brilliant idea, and a wide smirk formed on his face. "Why didn't I think of this before…?" He started chuckling to himself in his room of emptiness.
The princess of Hyrule was outside, practicing her aim with her bow and arrows. You may never know when the dark forces will strike Hyrule again. She needed to practice in order to stay sharp. But something was troubling her. "Will he really come back tonight…?" Zelda thought to herself, after missing the target. She had lost focus and decided to take a break and just drink some tea. She couldn't take her mind off of him. She thought it was all just a dream, but when she found that black rose with the note, laying on her night stand, she knew it was real, and there was no turning back.
She was on her way to get some tea, but a guard stopped her. "Princess Zelda." The guard bows down at her before he continued speaking. "We got news that Midna will be paying a visit." Zelda didn't expect the princess from the Twilight Realm to come and pay Hyrule a visit. She hasn't seen her since the incident that happened years ago, that Zant was trying to take over Hyrule by spreading the darkness. She has been in contact with her since then, but she never notified Zelda of her arrival. The princess nodded. "Thank you, you may go now. I'll be waiting for her at my throne." The guard bowed once more before leaving. 'Why would Midna come here without telling me anything? Maybe it's about business, or something happened in her realm?" she thought to herself while making way to her throne.
It was already dawn, soon to be night and as the doors were beginning to open, Zelda stood up from her throne. A beautiful woman with black clothing and ginger hair, made her way through the hall, stopping in front of princess of Hyrule. They both smiled at each other, and nodded. "It's been years since we last saw each other Midna." "Indeed it has, Zelda. Although being here brings back memories." Said Midna as she looked around, remembering the adventure she had with her "pet", Link. It was difficult, dangerous, but she did have fun. It was a journey she will never forget. It was nice being back and finally be able to just chat with the princess of Hyrule face to face, with no worries that Zant will take over. "Well, would you like a cup of tea?" Zelda invited Midna in. "I'll be glad to."
They both made their way to a room where it had a little table with for chairs, and were some shelves with books. The two princesses were sitting down, chatting and drinking their tea. "Oh and Zelda, may I ask something?" said the Twilight princess while setting her cup down gently. Zelda looked at her with a bit of confusion. "Yes Midna, anything." "How are things with Link, eh?" Midna grinned a bit at Zelda, which made her flush and her heart skip a beat. "W-what about him?" "Don't play dumb with me princess, I know you have feelings for him." She winked at the blushing princess of Hyrule. "T-true, you are correct Midna, but…" Zelda looked down at her cup of tea with sad eyes. "But his heart belongs to someone else, he sees me as a sister…" Midna couldn't believe what she was hearing. She thought the Hero of Time had the same feelings, but she was wrong sadly. She looked at Zelda with a concerned look. "When did he tell you that you are a sister to him…?" Zelda looked at Midna's eyes and since she was the only one she trusted, she decided to tell her when and how it went the day she had confessed her feelings.
Meanwhile in Zelda's room, Shadow Link couldn't wait any longer. He stepped foot out of the mirror. He looked around him and noticed the room was already dark, and the princess was nowhere to be seen. "Maybe I stepped out a bit early, hmm…" He started to think if he should wait for the princess in her room or to go out and look for her. He couldn't go out just like that, he was technically an intruder. He walked to the door and slowly opened it to see. He saw a guard pass by but he didn't notice the door was a tiny bit open. Shadow Link took this chance to transform himself into a guard of the castle (which the armor they have covered their face, so it's easier for him.), since he is a shadow, he can transform into whoever he wants. He walked out of the room as a guard, and started walking down the big halls, searching for the blue eyed beauty, Zelda. Until he suddenly stopped at the sound of two women talking, which both sounded familiar to him. He decided to peek at the room where the princesses were talking and got surprised that the princess from the Twilight realm was paying Zelda a visit. 'What is princess Midna doing here…?' But his ears caught something. They were talking how Link had rejected Zelda's feelings. This topic made Shadow Link frown, almost growl at the mention of his name. But he stayed put in order to hear them.
"After we took the walk, I told him how I felt… Well… He said he didn't feel the same, he just saw me as a sister, that's it. He's heart belongs to someone else, that he is just the Hero of Time, so of course he has to come and save Hyrule… Or save me if I ever get into trouble… He then apologized, and since then, he hasn't been around here since there hasn't been any trouble, he hasn't even visited..." as the princess of Hyrule said these words, she could feel tears strolling down her cheeks. Midna went to the sobbing princess and hugged her. "And this happened two months ago, huh…?" Midna sighed and looked at Zelda in the eyes. "Zelda, maybe he is not the one, clearly we can see he cares for you, but just as a sister. I'm sure you'll find the one who will love you, even if that person doesn't seem like a good person to others…" as she said these last words, she looked at the entrance of the room, where a guard was standing.
When the eyes of Midna looked at Shadow Link, who was disguised as a guard from the castle, he felt that the last thing she said to princess Zelda was also meant for him. He decided to walk back to Zelda's room. 'D-did she notice my true presence…? Of course, she is the Twilight princess! I was so stupid to be close to them… Now she probably knows about the Dark Mirror… Damn it…!' He looked at the dark mirror and sighed. He felt rage because he now knew how the Hero of Time had rejected princess Zelda, and because Midna knew of his decided to calm down and to just keep on going with his task. It was just the second night and he wasn't going to screw up now.
"Midna… W-what do you mean by that…?" said Zelda as she felt her cheeks flush a bit. Midna gave Zelda a gentle smile. "I know you let in something you shouldn't have…" Zelda's face went pale and she could feel her heart racing. 'S-she isn't talking about the Dark Mirror, can she...?' "M-Midna, what are you-" "Don't play dumb with me princess. You know I'm talking about the dark mirror." said Midna with a serious expression. Zelda felt scared. Was it bad she had that in her room? Was she going to take it away? "I won't take the mirror away, but I can't guarantee that something bad may happen. I'm pretty sure the one who came out of that mirror, will give you all the comfort you need. But you need to keep your guard up Zelda…"
She kept remembering what Midna told her a while ago before she made her leave, even though it was dangerous outside, she still decided to leave. 'She can't be serious… Link's shadow, fall for me? Hah! He could be an enemy for all I know! But she did say to be careful… Thank goodness she won't tell anyone that I have the Dark Mirror…' the princess thought while opening her door to her bedroom. It was already late. When she entered her room, she noticed a guard standing close to the window. "Excuse me, but you know quite clear that my room is off limits. Only when it's an emergency, guards are allowed to enter." Zelda said calmly at the "guard". A chuckled was heard from him and this made Zelda feel unsafe. When she was about to react, before her eyes the guard transformed back to the guy that looked just like the Hero of Time. Zelda's eyes went wide in surprise. "H-how did you-" "I'm just a shadow, remember? I can transform into whatever I want." chuckled Shadow Link while he went to the queen sized bed and sat on it. "W-why would you do that?!" yelled a furious Zelda. But then she remembered the guard standing close to the entrance of where she and Midna were having their talk. "Don't tell me it was you!" "Hm?" replied the shadow while staring at the princess from her bed. "You were listening to what Midna and I were talking about, huh?"
Shadow Link's ears perked up and stood up, making his way towards the princess. "Whoa, whoa, whoa princess. First of all, I didn't hear much from your 'girl talk' with Midna, alright? Second, can't I roam free whenever I want?" Zelda stared at him serious. "You're not supposed to come out from a mirror! Maybe you can disguise yourself, yes that's great, but you can't go around my castle, listening to my personal conversations with people! If you step foot out of that mirror, either you stay locked in here or don't get out of the mirror at all!" she could feel her cheeks burning, not just from anger but from embarrassment. Why should she feel like that? She had the right to yell at him, he was in her territory; he can't just go out and do whatever he wants. Shadow Link was at awe. He never thought he would ever see Zelda this pissed at him. 'She looks kinda hot and cute when she's mad, damn…~' thought the shadow before chuckling a bit and staring at Zelda. "Well excuse me princess, but I didn't know you were my owner, or wife or whatever." "W-wife?!" her cheeks flushed a crimson shade. "Alright, I don't know what the hell is on your mind, but if you please excuse me, it is getting late and I have to rest." Zelda walked pass the Hero of Time's shadow and made her way to her closet, which had some drawers inside. She took out her night gown, some underwear with her towel and stormed her way to the bathroom that was located next to a portrait, and opened the door. "When I get out from taking a shower, I hope you are nowhere to be seen." Said before closing the door behind her.
The shadow just blinked. Maybe he did finally did get into her nerves, but it was the opposite of what he had to do. He had to make her trust him, or fall for him, anything that would let him take her to Vaati without any fights, or having the Hero of Time in the situation. Then he remembered, why not play with her feelings? Or in other words, comfort her? A grin slowly showed on his face, and made his way towards the bathroom and started speaking. "Alright princess. You wanna be alone? Fine by me then, I'll never come back even if the mirror is here." He could hear the water stop running, and he of course, smiled at the little trick he just did. He quickly started making his way to the mirror, until he heard the female's voice. "W-wait…" he felt himself so successful right now, he couldn't help grin a bit, and then turned around to face the princess, who now had a dark blue nightgown and her hair still a bit wet, but her lovely face was a bit sad and looking down a bit. Shadow Link couldn't help but stare at her from top to bottom. 'She looks beautiful even when she looks sad… Agh! Focus! You got her right where you want her, so don't screw up now.' Shadow Link thought to himself.
Zelda slowly lifted her gaze from the floor and connected her blue eyes with the red ones of the shadow. She felt her heart now racing, she still asked herself why though. Finally, she decided to speak. "Look… I-I'm… I'm sorry at yelled at you… I just really didn't like the fact that you were just roaming around my castle, and hear part of my conversation that I was having with princess Midna…" she felt her cheeks burn a bit. ""I-if you want… I-I can make it up to you…" "Hm? What do you mean, princess?" Shadow Link raised an eyebrow in curiosity. "Well… If you want, tomorrow, you can come with me to Lake Hyla, s-since you can transform yourself into whomever you want, y-you can come with me disguised as one of my guards…" Link's shadow didn't expect it to go so well, but this was a bonus for tricking her that he was going to "leave" and "never come back." But he still gave it some thought, he didn't like being exposed to the light too much, but if they went at night, it was going to be too dangerous for princess Zelda, since the place always crawls with creatures at night, he didn't want to risk Zelda's life. "Well… I really dislike daylight but I guess I can go if I'm disguised as one of you guards." He crossed his, still looking at the princess. She smiled, happy that he had accepted her invite to go to Lake Hyla the next day. Wait, happy? 'W-why is my heart racing so much? It's not like it's a date or anything. It's just a stroll Zelda, so calm down!' She thought as her cheeks flushed when she noticed that Shadow Link was staring at her and chuckling to himself. "W-what so funny?" she pouted a bit, and made her way to her bed, still blushing. "Well, to be honest your face looked really adorable, I couldn't help but laugh."
"J-just go rest in your mirror, just come tomorrow like in lunch time or something, but stay inside the room." Said the princess as she lay on her bed. 'Guess I have to make her trust me and maybe make her fall for me tomorrow. We'll technically spend more time together, that's for sure.' He thought as he made his way towards the Dark Mirror. "Alright then." Said as he casually put his arms behind his back. "Sleep well princess, I'll see you tomorrow." He flashed a grin and a quick wink at Zelda's reflection on the way and entered the mirror.
Zelda looked at the mirror and flushed as she covered herself completely with her covers. "Why do I feel like this with him?" then, she shook her head a bit. 'No! I can't be falling for him. He is rude, a pervert and thinks he can do whatever he wants. But yet… I still can't help but feel a bit happy that I have his company in the night, and now tomorrow we'll take a stroll in Lake Hyla… Oh! Zelda, snap out of it! Just because he is Link's shadow doesn't mean you have to fall for him!' She mentally kept battling with herself before she finally fell asleep.
Meanwhile, Shadow Link was sitting once again on his throne in his pitch black room. He couldn't stop thinking about the princess, and feel happy that she had invited him out of the castle. "Damn it… " He frowned a bit as he felt his cheeks start to feel hot. "I'm just doing my job, and yet Ifeel like the one who is getting attached to her…" He kept remembering the tiny bit of information he heard from Zelda and Midna, about how the idiot Hero of Time had rejected such beauty. "Hmph… I am way better than him…" 'Wait, what? Did I just seriously say that?!' He could now feel his face burning, and his heart race a bit, was he really falling this hard for the princess of Hyrule. "No!" he stood up from his throne. "I am just a fool's shadow, ad my mission is to bring her to Vaati so I can be free from this damn place! I won't go low as to fall for a princess." He felt a bit of anger, but also a bit of confusion, yet he was still refusing to have feelings towards Zelda. He sat back down, as he sighed. "Tomorrow will be the third night, but I'll be out all day… But it seems I am, indeed making progress if she asked me to go to Lake Hyla as an 'apology' for yelling at me…" He started to chuckle to himself in the darkness. "Oh, this is gonna fun."
