"Maybe I could play him something..." The boy paused over the idea. Ren contemplated the latest point before releasing an annoyed growl and attacking the paper with his pencil again. "We'd never be alone enough!" he said as he sent the pencil in his hand clattering against the desk. "Isn't there anything I could do just for him that he could keep?" he sighed, hunching forward into his hand. Blue eyes wandered over the paper, eventually being drawn sideways to the tall man standing in the corner. "Are you going to give me any help?"
George chuckled softly, raising his eyes to meet Ren's. "Only if you'd like me to, Bocchan."
Ren let his arm drop to the desk and released a larger sigh than before. "Yes, yes I would. Now will you please come and help me?"
The butler ran his eyes over the slumped boy's furrowed face and tired, yet pleading eyes. I think this constitutes desperate, he reasoned.
"Of course, Bocchan." George leisurely approached the desk, holding his hand out for Ren's abused piece of paper. The boy pushed himself up and shoved it into his waiting hand. "Here..."
"Give him a present, jewellery maybe. Write and or sing a song. Play a song for him..." George muttered as he scanned over the few legible ideas. "Why not any of those?" he asked, looking up from the paper.
Ren slumped back onto the desk, picking his pencil back up so he could fiddle with it. "Masa doesn't really like jewellery and I can't think of anything else I could give him to keep..." he said, eyes staying focused on his pencil.
"What about the song?"
Blue eyes glanced up at the tall man, "I wouldn't be able to write a whole song by Saturday." Ren refocused on the pencil as he twilled it around his fingers. "I don't even know a place on their estate where I could play and we wouldn't be noticed and interrupted anyway," he admitted.
A soft sigh fell from the butler's lips as he rubbed the back of his head. I have to admit this isn't an easy one to figure out... he thought, trying to come up with a solution for the boy. As he contemplated the situation, Ren felt himself being pushed down by the silence, only broken by the occasional clattering of the pencil. Eventually both pairs of eyes followed it as an idea began to form in the butler's mind.
"Bocchan, haven't you been taking painting classes recently?"
"Yeah. The school decided to make it compulsory to take an arts subject other than drama for at least a term." Ren shifted his weight to face the man, raising an eyebrow at him in speculation. "Why is that important?"
"Perhaps you could give Hijirikawa a painting. A small one, of course. But it's not jewellery and he should be able to keep it."
"That might work," Ren said, nodding his head slowly. "But would it be enough..."
George paused to rethink his idea, his eyes wandering from place to place as the previous silence crept through the room.
"A poem," he said suddenly, eyes finally locking with Ren's. "What about a poem? Writing a poem is similar to writing a song, isn't it?"
"I suppose so." Ren looked down thoughtfully at the pencil in his hand. "But what..." His eyes widened in realisation, cutting his words short as he spotted the small star on the side of the pencil. The boy pushed himself up, leaving the chair swaying slightly from his hasty movements, and headed for the door. Ren's eyes flicked back to the butler as an afterthought, "Thanks George! You're brilliant!"
"You're welcome," the man answered, smiling as Ren speed down the hallway. "I hope you both remember this."
AN: Hello everyone~! It's been quite awhile since I first published this fic as it's a project on the back burner.
Originally I was going to have this chapter a bit like the first, showing what happened with both of the boys, unfortunately I've had a lot of trouble with writing Masa's part. It was the opposite when I started writing the chapter and I had trouble with Ren. And since I focused on him, I forgot the characterisation of young!Masa. Thus it is a lot shorter than I wanted it to be. So, because I still haven't been able to write it, I decided to upload just Ren's part for now. Once I have I might update this chapter or upload a separate one, depending on how long it turns out to be.
Also I couldn't remember what George calls Ren, so I just went with "Bocchan" which, in anime at least, is a common nickname for servants to call their "young masters."
Thank you for reading! I'd love to hear what you think (even if you come months after I update), so please leave a review~
Until next time~
