Chapter Two
"There was an incident. You have to come with me, Immy," Porter states as he grabs my hand and begins pulling me to an exit. I see the huge jeep waiting outside as soon as he pulls me through the trauma room doors. He opens the door and slips into the back with me.
As soon as the vehicle starts to move I open my mouth, "tell me Gale is okay."
"Gale is waiting for you," Porter said without further explanation.
"Tell me what is going on?" I shout into the compartment. It makes my voice seem louder but I'm truly just trying to get answers at any cost. I was surviving by myself before Gale stepped into the picture and I've made myself believe that I can handle whatever life throws at me.
"Commander Hawthorne is in a secure location, he is waiting for you to arrive at this bunker. Don't worry Immy, we will protect you. Gale made it clear that you were to be protected at all cost," Porter explained as he reached over and grabbed my hand. I quickly moved it back not wanting the other soldiers in the car to see.
"Soldier Aldjoy, I need to know why I'm to be protected at all cost," I try to explain. I know Commander Hawthorne didn't send his best troops out to guard his wife to safety. Gale would never put me first in a matter of national security. He was Head of Defense first and fore most. No, I had probably been made a priority by Plutarch Heavensbee. After all the face of rebel success needed his wife.
Gale Hawthorne was not only the Commander of the New Panem Army but he was the new face of hope. Plutarch's message was clear, "if the cousin of our beloved Mockingjay can move on after warfare and great loss then so can the citizens of our new nation."
"Commander's orders," he finally grunts. I sigh and look out the windshield. There are no windows for the passengers in the back and you could shut the windows in the front and the windshield with steel if an enemy was firing you upon. I remember how I first found out about the technology.
"Gale, what are we doing in here?" I asked as he guided through what appeared to be a garage. There were army vehicles surrounding us.
"I just wanted to show you something," he explained as we stopped in front of the jeep in the back. I huffed and look over at him. I tilt my head up so I can study his jaw line. He is a whole foot taller then me.
"Gale," I whisper as he lets go of my hand he had used to drag me here. He turns and looks at me. I'd only known him for two months. This wasn't a magical love story were we just knew we couldn't live without the other. In fact I didn't think it was going to be a love story at all. It was just that I understood what he needed more than anyone right now. He needed silence. He needed to breathe and hear himself think. He was Commander Hawthorne, he didn't need anyone asking him how he was and nobody ever did. He did need someone who understood silence though and all the things that can be unsaid but still communicated.
"Do you want to see the inside?" he prompted before opening the back door and pulling me in after him.
"It's huge in here." I state as he shuts the door. I look out the windshield and see the other vehicles in front of us.
"Lot's of room to fit as many soldiers comfortably as possible," he chimed and I could tell from the look on his face he'd helped design it. He loved creating knew things as much as he loved figuring out new strategies.
He met my eyes before wrapping his hands around my waist. "There is also a feature that blocks bullets from coming in through the glass. If you hit a button the windows and wind shield disappear but the driver can continue driving by the camera on the dash."
"Gale, that is so amazing," I chimed and he shrugged causing his hands to move on my waist. I leaned up and kissed him. It was soft and inviting. All my kisses were inviting for Gale though. I wanted him to know there was an open invitation for only him. I felt his hand leave my waist as he reached up into the console and suddenly the jeep was swallowed in darkness.
"We're almost there, Immy," Porter reassured pulling me from my daydream about Gale. Everything with Gale had been simpler then. Before I was his wife I was just me. I was the girl who patched people up and lived in the barracks with my new friend. I went out with the other young nurses on our days off. We would flirt with the many off duty soldiers and we would never see them again. I felt Porter squeeze my hand. I hadn't realized he finally was holding it.
"I'm sure my husband will be very grateful," I bite at Porter to get him to take his hand back. He slowly let go and I sighed. The last thing I needed from Gale right now was an accusation. We already had too many people haunting our relationship.
"I know he will," Soldier Aldjoy replied meeting my eyes. He knew as well as I did that his friend probably wasn't thinking about me right now.
"Nurse Hawthorne, we've arrived," the soldier in the front stated as we pulled into an underground garage. I looked out and saw Commander Hawthorne with his hands behind his back. He stood tall and his face betrayed no emotion. He has a soldier flanking his right. When the jeep comes to a stop Commander Hawthorne doesn't move but the soldier besides him steps up and opens my door.
"Thank you soldier," I state before making the few steps to Gale. "What's going on?"
"Just a few capitol loyalist groups made a threat on the hospital today," he said like it was no big deal. I felt my mouth drop open. Threats on the hospital were not casual to me. There were defenseless people in that hospital. My only friends were in that hospital, my best friend was in the hospital.
Gale turned and starting walking, I followed him. He didn't give me time to process or respond. I knew that if I stayed here trying to get a hold of myself that he would be angry so I followed. I was always following him it felt like.
Soon we were in what seemed to be an office. Gale waved his hand and everyone cleared out. Porter was the last to go and gave me a knowing look before exiting.
"What is being done to protect the citizens at the hospital?" I asked to Gale's back.
"The hospital isn't the concern," he countered and I sighed. In the short months we had been married I had been threaten by capitol loyalist four times. They saw me as the weakness to the Commander of the army. If only they knew Gale's only weakness was in district 12 in love with someone else.
"Gale, you can't keep pulling me from the hospital when there is a threat on my life! I can handle myself." I told him. He spun around and crossed the short distance between us.
"I know you don't believe me when I say this but I don't want anything to happen to you. I take care of my people and you're my only person now!" He puts his hands on my shoulders and I inhaled deeply before looking into his gray eyes and exhaling.
"I can't quit the hospital and I can't keep running from idle threats. You are letting a small group of loyalist control me, control us, and I've had enough control for one lifetime," I explain using my eyes to plead my case. I can see that I struck just the right nerve when his face tenses and he drops his hands from my shoulders.
"Don't quit," he states ice coming off his every word, "I know you'll come if Porter ask."
I scoff and turn my back to him, "Porter is my friend too. Besides you're not the one competing with ghost."
We had been at this stale mate for a month. I knew he was damaged when I committed to him for the rest of our lives but I had misjudged the extent of the damage.
"I'll get Soldier Aldjoy back in here to show you to our bedroom here," Gale was back to being the commander. I felt the tears press into my lower eyelids but I refused to let them fall.
Porter entered the room shortly after Gale called for him. He could see the tears in my eyes and I could see the soft reassuring smile in his. Those were the same eyes he'd given me the first night I met him.
"Are you okay?" I heard the deep but soft voice say from behind me. I was pressed up to the side of building I had just exited from. It was too stuffy and the people were too noisy and too drunk.
"I'm fine. Why'd you follow me out here?" I asked not bothering to look at the person.
"Thought maybe you could use someone to talk too," the guy explained. I sighed and turned to face the friendliest pair of eyes I'd encounter. They were so deeply green that I thought for a second this guy had to have them enhanced by the Capitol.
"I don't need help," I told him with a newfound strength in my voice.
He smirked at me with a nod. "Of course you don't."
That was the main difference between Gale and Porter. Gale felt the need to carry the world on his shoulders and he took me on as more of a person to protect. Porter saw me as someone capable to stand on my own two feet. He never once waivered in his faith that I didn't need help or protecting, he somehow got that I needed support.
I had followed Soldier Aldjoy to my room for the night. Taking a step in I realized it was basic in here. There was no hominess to it. Everything was grey. I didn't know what I expected for a bunker room, it's not like there was a person who could come to the Commander's protective bunker and water planets in the rooms.
"Nice, digs, yours seem just a little less grey than ours," Porter said as he watched me take everything in. I snorted at his joke and I heard his return chuckle. I opened the chest drawers to find the basic essentials for a comfortable wardrobe; pants, underwear, shirts. There wasn't that many but enough for a few days.
"Did yours come stocked also or did you have to bring a bag?" I quipped and he smiled causing his eyes to crinkle at the sides.
"Didn't have time to pack the Commander was clear that you were our first priority," he responded. I sighed as I seat down on the bed looking at Porter. He was always trying to get me to see Gale's protectiveness as a good thing.
But that was part of the problem, Gale and 'his whole protector of all' complex. He had spent so long providing and protecting his family that he confused protectiveness and love. He saw me solely as something to protect and he thought that was close enough to love.
A/N: So I know it is a bit dark, Gale and Imogen don't really seem happy together but I promise you everything will clear up. People who have been through things and come together have to grow together also. They are both fragile and insecure in their love right now.
