First thing I noticed about waking up was my new heightened senses. I'm guessing this was coming from my enhanced physical attributes. The sound of the sea, crashing waves and the flying seagulls above. Next was the smell of the saltwater and how it annoying strong it was. I couldn't taste anything so I couldn't describe that. I also couldn't really explain touch as a normal human already has a high sense of touch and I don't have anything to prove it was better.
I didn't help that they were tied up in a bundle of rope. It seemed like my hands were stuck above my head.
There is a reason why I wasn't able to describe my sense of sight as I currently blindfolded in addition to the rope tying up my hands. I'm guessing this is what I was given after choosing 'Without a Map'.
You know enhanced senses are cool if you are used to them.
The few seconds I had with studying my enhanced senses were the calm before the storm. From every direction, sounds and smells assaulted my system. I tried to instinctively put my hands to my ears but that didn't work out too well.
Sounds of quiet sobbing and vigorous thumping were the most prevalent sounds I heard. I could feel sensations at the back of my head. Two different ones stood out from the rest. Is this something to do with my 'Mana Sense' or 'Empathy'? They sounded like children, very young ones in fact, with their dialect and high pitched voices. Already this seemed like a big red flag yet with sounds of footsteps coming down some sort of hall, it didn't seem like it was going to get better.
...
...Are they not here yet? I thought they were closer than that.
"ALRIGHT, YOU LITTLE BRATS…" A voice screamed out causing me to let out a quiet sound of pain for my ears. Did he really have to that loud? "...WE GONNA GET OFF THE BOAT." He paused for a second "SO GET THE FUCK UP."
Not again, please be quieter.
Hurried footsteps had run away as the man kept egging the kids to leave. Their heartbeats and sobs had become more prevalent, even as they rushed to who knows where.
"And you…" I assumed he turned to me. A new feeling, I didn't know what it was. I couldn't really move and clearly didn't want to. I mean you're the one shouting at my poor ears. "...We don't usually take mages but we've been needing a battery for quite some time now. The last one died of exhaustion."
Battery?
I kept a calm facade as I proceed what he said. Firstly, whoever this is, knows what mages are. That means that he is part of an organization or mages are something that is commonplace. I'm not sure until I get more information.
Secondly, There were definitely children around me and with his anger, he didn't seem to be one that should be looking after such kids. This all seems like a kidnapping scheme. Let's not forget that I've been tied up.
Finally, he talks about me being a battery. That sounds like some sort of mana extracting nonsense I've heard about in fantasy books and other media. This also shows that mages have been around for a while if they have made the tech to take the magic away from me.
Is this...Is this what it meant to have enhanced mental capabilities? I don't feel or seem smarter but it looks like I'm more aware of my surroundings and other people.
"Good…" The man continued "...You know your place, just keep quiet and you'll do fine". Yeah, because I'm being so complacent. "Do so and you'll be fine here." He laughed as he came and untied my hands before placing some sort of hand-cuffs on me. I grunted as he pulled me up onto my feet, a rope attached to the handcuffs.
We walked off the boat, if the wooden texture underneath my feet was something to go by. I could feel something from all the people around me, not all of them but most had this sensation.
This must be my 'Empathy' at work. My skill let me notice and categorize people's feelings. However, this doesn't mean I knew what those feelings were. It's like making a colour-blind man name colours after seeing it for the first time of his life. Though it wasn't as hard to associate colours with feelings as these people were wearing them on their sleeves.
The fact is that this amount of feelings coming from what seemed like kids made it seem like it was 'Empathy' at work and not 'Mana Sense'. He had singled me out, solidifying that fact.
I cursed slightly as I figure these people took my items and clothing. The blueprint and book especially. Anything could happen if these people learnt how to make mecha-shift weapons or if they learnt Alchemy.
I could not let that happen.
This was mainly out of pride and greed. Those were mine and I'll be damned if they figure it out.
In my thought, I noticed the man had stopped and had done so myself, almost hitting him in the process.
"Hurry up, I'm going to take you to your cell after this." That same feeling, He seemed annoyed? I think at least.
Why was I here though? Am I going to do become a battery already? How are they going to do that if I don't even know how to use magic? Actually, do I even have it unlocked? And if not, how do they know I have it?
I hate having questions without answers but I can't do anything about it. A small downside to this new mental prowess is that I question everything around me.
Sound of a metal door opening in front of caused me to turn my head to it. The pitter patter of the heartbeat of a large man appeared in front of me. He had the same feeling like the man before me but it soon changed into another one.
"Oi, cumstain. Why the hell is this brat here?" Yep, This is definitely annoyance kind of feeling, if the tone of his voice was anything to go by.
"Yeah, this kid has been giving off a bit of mana. He might last for a while but who knows?" A new feeling came from the man, it seemed like it was more of an indifference. That's what I got from the tone of his voice.
"SO YOU BROUGHT A MAGE HERE?!" The man screamed. I winced again at the volume.
"So what? here's a kid." The man who held my rope asked.
"So what… SO WHAT?! HE COULD BE HERE UNDER THE MAGIC COUNCIL!"
"AND IF HE IS?! I'M SICK AND TIRED OF EATING COLD ASS FOOD. WE NEED A MAGE TO POWER OUR BATTERIES!"
"EVER THOUGHT OF THE FACT OF THE COUNCIL FINDING OUT OUR LOCATION WITH HIS MAGIC?!"
"THE BRAT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE HIS MAGIC UNLOCKED!"
"...What?" The man that came out the door questioned. There was a new feeling overriding his anger.
"Yeah, there's no way this brat could be from the council if his magic isn't even unlocked." The annoyance came back to the rope man.
"How is he producing so much mana then?" Doorman stated.
"The hell if I know" A new feeling, I think this is indifference but can't be too sure. "All I know is that if we take him to the EEM, he would either unlock his magic and power our items or die in the process. It makes no difference to us." Yeah, this seems like indifference.
Also, I DON'T WANT TO DIE.
Whatever this EEM thing is, I'm going to have to go through it, it's inevitable. My magic, even when locked, is already causing me problems. I suspect my heightened bodily prowess is to blame. In many stories, magic comes from either the physical aspect or the mental aspect, maybe even a mix of both.
"Bring the boy in, we might as well use him." called out as he walked in.
I felt the rope tug me before we entered the room.
"You don't know how long I was waiting for this." stated before taking the rope off of the man and pulling me into the room. I flinched at the sound of the door closing. Sounds of low humming coming in front of me made me curious and slightly scared.
"Hurry the fuck up and stand there, kid, we haven't got all day." He said, annoyance creeping up again.
"I..." I spoke for the first time. Hesitating at the child-like voice I had. "I can't see where you want me to stand" I said, gesturing to my blindfold.
The man had grunted but had come over to me to take off the blindfold. The bright light of a pedestal shined in my face which had to lead me to hold up my bound hands to my face. Around me were men in robes that hid their bodies and faces. On their robes, there is a weird symbol.
Imagine someone had taken the wings off of a bat and stretched out the part of the wing where it would connect to the body and interlaced those two wings from the stretched body parts. I don't remember seeing it before so I still have no idea where I am. I was again urged to move, this time seeing where I was supposed to go. Surprise, Surprise, it was the large and ominous pedestal.
Standing upon the pedestal, two men had come up to me and attacked chains to my neck, arms and legs before stepping back. A large glass cylinder had come down to encase me, separating me and the cloaked men.
"Oi Brat…" The man from before shouted out. His was the only cloak down, the only thing that seemed to stand out on his face was the two scars on his left cheek and left the eye. "Don't move touch much and it won't hurt too badly." He had stated, the same indifference feeling crept up again. I guess he didn't care much if I got hurt, did he?
Before I could say anything, a large light crystal had appeared above me and my chains had tightened to keep me from moving too much.
(3rd Person POV)
"AAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH..." The kid screamed out in pain. The men outside of the glass had taken care to dampen the sounds that had come from the Ethernano Extraction Module (The EEM for short).
"Hmmmm…" The same man from before had mused aloud. He looked upon the console that had shown the brat's mana output. Mana seems to be extracted at the usual rate, if not a bit slower, but there was a lot of resistance. He had called upon one of the workers there to increase the amount of Lacrimas above the child.
As the worker had cranked a wheel on a nearby wall the blue light that had descended upon the child's body had increased twice-fold, causing his face to stay stuck in an expression of pain, no noise erupting from the child.
20 Minutes later, the console had shown to have stopped extracting mana, indication that he had no mana left to take. He had called the same worker to close of the lacrima and another to get the boy, body if he was still alive.
Yet he stopped when something mind-blowing happened.
The body of the still standing child started to twitch. First, it was the finger, then his arms, his legs until, eventually, his whole body started to spasm.
The man had stopped the two workers in favour to watch the boy.
It was then the lacrima had started up again but this time pulling more magic than it physically could do. The man scrambled out of his shock and forced the worker to increase the amount of lacrima in the EEM.
The man had lost track of time with how much this child has been building up their batteries. A normal child wouldn't have even lasted half this time.
One of the workers that had worked with the scar-faced man looked upon the child that he was dragging. He felt jealous of this child's power. Only a day and their bosses already had their eyes on him. If he had that kind of power, he would be running the place. They were lucky at least this child had his mana extracted with none of it left to be used until it regenerated. They didn't have to worry about a Mage in their ranks of slaves, especially one of this power.
When he finally came upon the cell, he had tugged the rope that was around the child's wrists hard enough to fall in front of his feet before kicking him in the cell. The children and old man that were already surrounding the child but he didn't care. He walked off right after, letting them deal with the child.
"What do you think, Mister Rob?" Asked a small blond haired boy.
"The boy will be fine, he's just exhausted. He may wake up soon but we don't know." The skinny elderly man smiled back.

A calming yet rough hand had placed on my shoulder and a sliver of light had entered my vision. Some old man had entered my vision. Silvery grey hair that reached his back with two strands that reached his long beard. Eyebrows almost as falling down to the bottom of the beard. He was shirtless, wearing only shorts.
"You are amongst friends, child. We will not hurt you." I nodded absentmindedly. I could still feel those people pulling out my magic. I don't know what happened but something clicked as it felt much smoother, what hurt more was the process of it getting to the point where it was smoother. After that, it didn't hurt as much.
"...Thank...Thank you." My voice trembled slightly as I tried to recover.
"Hey, Hey. What's your name?" A small child with brown bowl haircut came up to me. A new feeling, this was above the same sadness I felt from the other kids. Maybe this was some kind of happiness. Cheer?
"Akira...Just Akira." I replied, I honestly did not want to talk. Not right now.
"That cool. My name's Millianna." She pointed to herself. I guess I'm not getting any time to myself, am I? "That's Jallal, Rob, Erza, Sho, Simon, Wally".
Respectively; A small blue boy had given me a nod, the old man sent me a smile, the red-haired girl had also sent me a smile, the blond one sent me his own shakey one, a black-haired boy had sent me a side glance nod before putting his arms around his knees and another black boy had sent me a wave.
I nodded back but kept to myself. Internally, I was screaming when I found out where I was.
I'm in the Tower of Heaven with Jallal and the rest of the crew.
I looked around to the kids, they seemed to be sending me side glance but also kept to themselves. Another new feeling must be curiosity, I don't see what else it could be. The old man seemed to have this same feeling but another feeling stronger. With his old age and what I know about his character, probably concern.
Erza is going to have to start a revolution against the slavers. Jallal is going to get possessed. The other kids will be fine and live good lives except for Simon. Need to save him, and Rob too. Not having them die. Those are the priorities, Jallal will be fine after and with all the redemption he does, he does some good things for the world, especially taking down those dark guilds.
During this time, Jallal had come up to me with his hand stretched out "My name is Jallal Fernandes, Nice to meet you." He said, "We heard what happened and we understand."
"What do you mean 'you heard'?" There's no way that they could have heard what happened unless the guards like to gossip around the kids. Actually, I can see that happening.
I hated how cold I sounded.
"Y-Yeah, We've all been hurt from not listening to these people." He stuttered slightly, I guess I was too harsh. There was a new feeling, I couldn't tell if he was scared or nervous. Maybe a mix of two.
"I listened to them but that's what got me in this mess," I said to their all around the shock.
"B-But that shouldn't happen, you must have done something." Erza had said, causing the rest of us to look at her.
A new feeling and look came from Rob and, once Erza saw it, she was quiet again.
"Did you something happen?." Milliana had taken over for the others. The same feeling of concern was more prominent than before.
I just wanted to alone.
"Let's leave him for now." Rob asked the kids "I'll speak to him, go on. Shoo." The kids had taken to the other side of the cell, nearer to the bars whilst Rob had come and sat next to me.
"Why are you here?" I asked him, he was not bothered by how cold I was to him. He may be used to it with all these kids here.
"I understand what you're going through more than the others." After not hearing a reply, The man continued "I heard- We heard the screams from here." I flinched from the phantom pains that had popped up "They did the same thing to me when I first came here. They stopped after my old age slowed my magic down."
"How did you get through it? It hurts so much." I stared at him. I already wished I had not chosen 'Without A Map' I wouldn't have to deal with that.
"They forcibly unlocked your magic, didn't they?" He asked. I nodded back "It'll be much easier from now on."
From now on? From now on?!
I don't want to deal with that anymore. I can still hear my screams. My body started to light up in a cold sweat.
For a second time, Rob had grabbed my shoulder again "Focus on my voice and take a deep breath."
He had repeated this a few times until I started to listen. I didn't know when my breathing had sped up but I was able to get it back down.
"...Thank you" I said to him hesitantly "I needed that."
"It's no skin off my back, We've all been through a lot," he gestured to the kids that were trying to watch us silently and failing spectacularly.
"I guess we're stuck with each other for the foreseeable future aren't we?" I chuckled slightly.
The same happiness appeared again from Rob. I guess making a somewhat joke seemed to calm down his worries for the time being.
I looked back to the kids, who were whispering to each other. I guess I have to do this sooner or later.
"Nice to meet you, My name's Akira. If you didn't know." I said awkwardly. These kids were like they were looking through my soul. It was honestly nerve-wracking. I was mentally older than these kids so I felt like I was the one who had to come up and start the conversation.
The small bowl-haired one, Millianna If I'm not wrong, stood up and was already up in my space "Yeah, we know. You said so already." She said, shaking my hand.
"Is it just Akira? Or do you have a second name?" Asked the stoic Simon.
"No, it's just Akira... I think I already said this?" I said the last part to myself.
"Do you want to join us? We're trying to draw." Sho, the small blond mousey one said. "If you don't mind that is?" He added awkwardly after.
"...Sure...That seems fun."
It ended up being more fun than I thought, though we couldn't draw for our lives. I eventually showed the three of them some games such as 'Dots and Boxes' and 'Naughts and Crosses'.
"HOW ARE YOU DOING THIS? YOU'RE CHEATING, CHEATING I TELL YOU." Wally jumped up and screamed to my face.
I understood why he did that, even if it was annoying to my ears. I had been beating most of them in both games, only Jallal was able to stand a chance but with my sure fire way of winning, My victory was assured.
Muahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh, I think I was chuckling out loud.
"SEE HE'S CHEATING AND HE KNOWS IT." Wally continued.
"WOULD YOU SHUT THE FUCK UP?" One of those cloaked men came to our cell. "It's time for your shift." He said as the gate opened up.
Shift? What is going to do?
The rest of the kids became downtrodden when they heard this. I don't know what we have to do specifically but I know it won't be all hugs and rainbows. Rob again had put his hand on my head and urged me to stand up. I obeyed since he hasn't lead me astray so far.
We all walked out one by one, lead by Rob. Our heads were down as we tried not to stay as quiet as possible. I hated this but I knew it would cause more trouble for the rest of us if I start to rebel.
As we headed to our (Unknown) destination, more slavers and slaves had joined us. The slavers had a show of power by releasing magic at certain intervals. This had caused the more outgoing people to become complacent. My teeth were getting at the sight.
A hand had entered mine, calming me down. Looking to my side, I see Erza with eyes that had urged me to not do anything. I nodded back, getting her to let go of my hand and walk back in line.
"You aren't old enough to do anything much nor do they trust us enough to work on the higher levels. Our tasks are simple, we have to take the debris away from the ground and put them within those trolleys. Its hard work but gets easier after some time." Rob had explained to me as the other kids went to work.
He was beside me, directing me on what needed to be done. He was already too fragile to do the heavy lifting so I was there to help. It was easier with the 'Charles Atlas Superpowers', though it quickly got tiresome. I had the peak of human strength but it was restricted as I was in the body of a child.
I helped out a few unfortunate newbies that had arrived with me, they not prepared for this. I didn't help them much though. If I did, They wouldn't be able to strengthen themselves up to do it themselves later on.
"I wished that it hadn't come to this, these kids should be living with their families." Rob said to me as I stood next to him.
"Life's like that sometimes. We don't get what we want. " He didn't say anything to retort "But good things come to people who wait." I said.
Rob chuckled "Is that so?" He turned to me fully "What do you want to should you ever get out of here?" He asked me.
"I don't have any plans, to be honest" I said absent-mindedly, I guess I could join Fairy Tail, maybe with Erza.
"You don't have anyone to go back to?" The concern was back again.
I shook my head "Nah, never did. I just live life to the fullest and see where it takes me."
"Keep yourself safe at least, that same mentality got you here didn't it?" Rob asked me.
I guess it did in some sense.
"...Living your life to the fullest?" I turned to see Jallal there, sweat was stuck to his shirt but he still looked somewhat fine. "That must be fun." Despair again.
"Hey, if we ever get out here. I show you what I mean." I said to him, I really didn't like that feeling. But it was all good as another new feeling cropped up.
"HEY, THE FUCK ARE YOU TWO DOING?" A voice cut of whatever Jallal was about to say. One of the cloaked men had come up to the two of us. "Who said the two of you could stop working?"
"B-But.." Jallal started yet the bastard didn't care as he grabbed him by the hair.
"Hey, the hell are you doing?" I called out instinctively as I ran to him. My fist was already out but the man had just thrown Jallal onto me.
This had caused us to sprawl out on the floor. The man came up kicked Jallal off of me with his foot, getting a grunt of pain from him.
"You must be one of the newer ones" He started "You clearly didn't know who you were talking to so I'll let you two off this time. Though, you're still gonna take another shift." The man finished as he laughed.
If being merciful was only another shift, what the hell was he going to do to us instead?
I growled as I accepted Jallal's hand to help me up. Jallal was mirroring me in glaring at the man but we couldn't do anything, not yet at least.
"Let's just get this done with already." Jallal stated as he walked off from me. I wasn't in the mood to talk either.
I didn't know how long we were taking since I didn't have any sort of way to see the time but we went until most of the kids had started to slow down. Some of the slavers had come and given some 'incentives' so the kids could work harder.
I couldn't wait till we rebelled. Nobody is leaving here alive. Even if I don't do it, Jallal most likely will.
"ALRIGHT SHITSTAINS, GET OVER HERE." One of the cloaked men called out.
Whilst the other kids had rushed over to the men, the same man from before had stood in front of Jallal and I. He looked down at us with barely hidden disgust.
"You two are going to continue working with the next shift, I don't care if you are tired. Your food will be in your cells." He smirked down at us "That's if your cellmates don't eat it first."
As the man walked off, Jallal turned to me. "I'm sorry we got in this mess but let's just this over and done."
I guessing this was a matter of pride to him as it didn't feel as sincere as it would have if it came from someone else. Still, I know this is the best I'm going to get out of him.
"Thank you, and don't worry. We're in this together." I said to him.
He was about to say something but his eyes had widened as something loomed over me. I looked back to see a different man than the one that had told us to stay.
"Why the fuck are you two here? Hiding something are you, hmm?" He asked, with a big grin showing off his deformed teeth.
"We were told that we had to work overtime." I told him, I wished I could punch him. It would be so easy but the consequences would be disastrous.
"I don't think so~" He said in a sing-song voice.
Great, I'm dealing with one of the insane ones.
"But we did. You can ask him, he's right…" Jallal trailed off as he couldn't see where the previous man was.
As a matter of fact, there wasn't anyone else with us here. Where the hell did he go?
"I don't have time to play with the two of you so I guess I'm just going to choose one. The other can go back to his cell." He stated, making me shiver at the thought of playing. "Eine meine -You" He pointed at me, finger right on my nose.
"...What?" I was slightly confused and scared.
"Come along boys, we're gonna find someone to take you to your cell." He said the last part to Jallal.
The man walked off with me following him from behind. I didn't hear any footprints so I looked back to see Jallal frozen. Jallal was shivering as he watched wide-eyed, What the hell got him so shook?
It took him a moment to notice that I was waiting before he caught to me.
"We've been stitched up." He said with clenched fists. "The man must have left us as we were working."
"Does that happen often?" I asked but I already knew the answer. The bastards are just playing with us. He must of know this crazy one was gonna come down and left us with him.
"OI, YOU." The man we were following called out. Another cloaked person was there. "Take this blue haired one back to his cell, I'm taking this one."
"Yeah, Yeah. Whatever, It's not like I have better things to do." He pushed Jallal away from me as they walked off.
I felt myself falling as my head the ground, "Oops.." the man said as he walked with a slight skip in his step.
I growled again as I got up to catch up with him.
"You know. The chief has his eye on you and a lot of people don't like that." He started as we walked down some damp stairs. Each echo making me more and more nervous as time went on. "
We continued until we had hit a large door. This one had dried blood that was pooling at the bottom.
"So I'm here to make sure that it gets paid back…" He opened the door making me nauseous and pale as I saw the various tools and machines. "...In full."
The door slammed behind us.
Dun...Dun...Dun.
What the hell could be happening to Akira?
I think we all know.
I think Akira is going to escape in the next chapter but who knows?
I just don't have anything new I can write about being in the Tower of Heaven.
I hope you guys enjoyed the second chapter.
Until Next Time,
Ja Ne.
