Foxpaw raced out of his new den, ready to finally have some fun. After finally being slowed down by his mentor, Cederflight, he wondered what he was going to do.
"Are we going hunting? Practicing battle moves? Please tell me we're fighting!"
"Not yet." Cederflight shook her head. "To practice battle moves, we'd need to have Shadowclaw and Petalpaw with us, but they're already gathering moss, so for today we will learn to hunt." Foxpaw nodded his head excitedly and they wandered to an area they'd seen during the tour, not a very exciting first day. But today things would be different. Foxpaw would have fun and be able to kill his own prey. Once they reached the deeper forest, Cederflight demonstrated how to kill prey.
"...and remember to always thank Starclan for the prey that it has provided for you. Do you wanna try?"
"I'm ready." Foxpaw spoke in a soft whisper. Suddenly he had a large scent flood into his nose. Rabbit? Ne guessed it was because they were near the field. He stalked towards the rabbit, and pounced. The rabbit ran away, but it was too fat to be very fast. Foxpaw tried to gain speed by climbing a tree, but since he didn't know how to climb, he clumsily fell down...right onto the rabbit! He gave it the killing bite and started to walk toward the clan.
"Did you thank Starclan for the rabbit's life?" Cederflight asked with worry. He knew Foxpaw was a rebel, but he didn't want him to be disrespectful to Starclan as well.
"Of course not!" Foxpaw replied with confidence.
"I told you to thank Starclan for the prey! They provided it for you!"
"But I did all the work of hunting! If Starclan really cared, they would've just given us pre-killed prey."
"I don't care what you think about it, Starclan DID provide that rabbit for you, do thank them!"
"Fine. Thank you Starclan (for forcing me to do all the work). There. Happy?"
"Actually yes." The cats both walked back to the clan, cats staring at the monumental catch. Later on, Foxpaw saw Oakstar eating the prey! He almost went to brag about it, but Petalpaw kept him from doing so with her famous gentle bat. The only problem was, this didn't feel complete. Why did he work so hard just for another cat to eat his catch, especially if Starclan could've given the clans countless dead rabbits without them having to hunt? He wanted to question it more, but he needed to get some rest. Tomorrow would be the day that Cederflight and Shadowclaw, and nothing would stop him from hearing the wail of defeat from his sister's jaws.
