A/N: I did initially plan on having this chapter be their first date, but I had this idea which ended up too long to not split this and the date into multiple chapters. I'm happy with how it turned out though so I hope you will be too!
"Hey Ohta, what are you doing?"
"I'll tell you later Tanaka, for now, it's a secret."
"Really? Why can't you just tell me? I thought you weren't supposed to keep secrets from someone you're dating."
"If you really need to know, I'm planning our first date. I want to make it perfect though, so can you please just forget about it for now so you don't ruin the surprise?" …Was how the conversation between the two had gone. Tanaka reluctantly giving up, with a slightly irritated pout lining his face, and Ohta continuing to jot down notes in his notebook, looking over his shoulder every now and then to make sure Tanaka wasn't trying to spy on him. The listless boy was happy that Ohta was going to all this effort for him, but it had meant that he had been walking home alone the last 2 days, as his now boyfriend had been secretly heading off to all sorts of places after school, for what Tanaka could only assume was to scout out date spots. Ohta had told him that he'd take him out for their first proper date on the weekend, which left either 3 or 4 days before the big day, and despite how lazy Tanaka was, he couldn't sate his curiosity on what they would be doing. He felt like he had been denied the information, and the fact that he wasn't supposed to know it, made him all the more motivated to find out.
"Sorry Tanaka, but I've got some errands to run again this afternoon. I promise I'll be done with all this in just a couple days so bear with it for now, ok?" The blonde apologized to his friend, and as much as Tanaka didn't like it, he let his friend go without complaint, knowing that for all Ohta did for him, sometimes he had to let him do his own thing as well. Although, what Ohta didn't know, was that while he left Tanaka to get home by himself, he also left the boy free to come up with plenty of schemes to get a look at the blondes precious note book before the weekend.
The next day
"Ok Miyano, you understand the plan right?" Tanaka asked the hyper-energetic girl, having texted her his idea last night. He was really hoping that their plan would work, because while he had thought of a few other ideas, and had also contacted a few other friends about some of them too, the ideal situation for him would be the one where he put in the least amount of work possible in order to spy a look at the notebook.
"Yes, master! I'll distract Ohta and you get the notebook from his desk while he's gone! It's such a great plan, I wouldn't expect anything less from you!" She answered with a huge grin, excitedly bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet as he did so, unable to stop herself from moving and fidgeting in at least some way.
"Here he comes!" She continued, pulling her head back from the open door, causing Tanaka to lift a finger to his closed mouth to shush her before slowly heading across the classroom to his desk, pretending to sleep. He didn't have the energy for it in real life, but in his head, he was saluting Miyano, congratulating her on the effort she was about the expend so that Tanaka could take the easy job. Miyano wanted to get up and get the plan going right away, but she had been given strict instructions to act like she was talking with other friends for a few minutes before heading over to Ohta, so that he had enough time to put his things away.
"Good morning Tanaka, oh, and you're already asleep I guess. Hmm, it would be mean to wake him, and we'll still got 15 minutes before class starts, I can let him sleep for a little bit longer." The blonde mumbled to himself before sitting down and organising his things for the day. As Miyano sneaked a peak over, she really couldn't tell if Tanaka was still pretending, or if he had actually gone to sleep. Either way though, she was determined to do her part, and she was sure that even if he had fallen asleep, her listless master wouldn't fail the mission.
"Ohta!" She practically yelled out, jumping out of her chair with vigour and running over to the boys desk.
"Good morning, Miyano. You look like you have something you want to say."
"Yes, I do! I want to show you the new cookies I made for Ecchan! They're really cool, and I made her promise not to eat them until you had a look!" She exclaimed, proud of the well-thought out lie she had come up with. She figured there was no way he wouldn't believe her, and she was right.
"Really? Do you think Echizen will let me have some?" Ohta replied in a hopeful tone, and within seconds, he was standing up and letting the small girl lead him to the next classroom over.
"Good job." Tanaka whispered under his breath as soon as he heard the sound of the rooms door closing behind the pair. For any other high school aged boy, when planning out the scene, it would have probably been like a spy movie, with them creeping around the classroom, avoiding imaginary lasers and pretending to hang down from the ceiling, all that sort of stuff. But for Tanaka, his ideal plan was to simply reach across the minimal space between the twos desks and manage to get the book out without even leaving his own seat. And while he was able to reach into his friends desk before he had time to get back from Miyano's ruse, inside it, he found nothing but normal textbooks and worksheets.
"Looking for this?" A familiar voice shocked Tanaka for a second, until he turned around the see his boyfriend at the door to the room, holding the notebook in his hand.
"I'm sorry master, he got suspicious when Ecchan wasn't in her classroom, and I saw the notebook in his jacket pocket before he came back in, but he held it above his head and I jumped and I jumped but I couldn't reach it!" The tiny girl apologized, feeling ashamed that she had failed the mission her master of listlessness had given to her.
"No, it's ok Miyano. It just means that Ohta is a more difficult target than I expected." Tanaka reassured, even going so far as to get up out of his seat and walk over to the pair.
"Ohta, can't you just let me look? Making up plans to sneak a peek is so tiring!" He begged, looking up to his boyfriend with pleading eyes. Ohta knew he needed to act tough, because if he let himself stare into Tanaka's eyes for a second too long, he knew he wouldn't be able to resist whatever request he was making of him.
"I'm not giving in Tanaka, you can keep trying to steal it from me but I promise I'll always be a step ahead." Ohta flashed a devilish grin as he spoke. He really did want to keep his plans a secret until their date, and give Tanaka a great surprise. Although, he also found himself hoping that the listless boy still had a few tricks up his sleeve. Watching the usually entirely unmotivated boy working somewhat hard towards a goal was pretty fun.
"Fine, if you won't let me see I'll have to make you! But just remember that you're the one I'll come complaining to when I'm too tired to walk home this afternoon!" And with that, Tanaka made his way back to his desk to look through the memos he had left on his phone the night before to find his next scheme.
…
"Will you give me a piggy back ride this time?" He asked as the bell for the next class rung, and although Ohta was suspicious about the sudden request, he still lifted Tanaka up and onto his back.
"Make sure to hold on ok? Wrap your arms around my chest. Oh, and no funny business trying to get my notebook." Ohta advised, and while Tanaka did make sure to hold on tight to his boyfriend; quite enjoying the warm and comfortable feeling, he would make no promises about not trying anything funny. As Tanaka spied his two friends with their distinctive red and blue hair- Shimura and Katou- he knew it was time to put Plan B into action.
"Mission: start." He whispered to himself, as he motioned a small signal with one of his hands for his friends to move into position. A second later, he let go of his boyfriends chest and brought his hands up to his face, using them to cover his eyes and temporarily blind him. In the moment, he was actually quite proud of himself for doing something so athletic.
"Huh, Tanaka? What're you doing?" Ohta fumbled in feigned confusion. He really was surprised when he suddenly couldn't see anything, but it had really been so obvious that something was about to happen when he heard his boyfriend not so subtlety say something about a mission starting.
"Attack!" Katou yelled enthusiastically as he ran in, with the less energetic red haired Shimura lagging slightly behind. Even while robbed of his sight though, Ohta easily dodged their advance, and before they had a chance to try again, he had pried Tanaka's fingers off his eyes and held them in his large hands. Tanaka was dumbfounded that his plan had gone so terribly wrong, but it didn't take long for Ohta to speak up and make him understand just what mistake he had made.
"Next time keep the cheesy lines to yourself Tanaka, you do realise that your head is resting just next to mine when I piggy back you, right?" The blonde chuckled as he spoke, finding it kind of cute that the listless boy had spoiled his own plan by tipping off the enemy. With a pout, Tanaka simply thanked his two friends for their efforts, and rested his head down on his boyfriends shoulder until they reached the classroom, promising to not cause anymore trouble at least until they got there.
…
'This time it's got to work. Plus, this time Shiraishi is the one doing everything, so I can just sit back and wait for my prize!' The listless boy thought to himself as he sat beside Ohta at lunchtime, revelling in his own soon to come glory. As if on cue, Shiraishi walked up to the pair mere seconds later, with a container wrapped up in cute cloth under her arm.
"Hey Ohta kun, Tanaka kun, do you mind if I sit with you?" She asked, starting off with a normal request to avoid suspicion.
"Sure, feel free." Ohta replied happily, not yet realising the ploy he was about to fall hook, line and sinker for. As the class-beauty sat down, Ohta finally smelt what it was she was holding, and he was definitely a fan.
"Hey Shiraishi, are those more homemade sweets? They smell amazing."
"Yep! I can give you a look if you'd like." As Ohta nodded enthusiastically in response to Shiraishi's offer, Tanaka knew that he almost had the boy fooled. Once he got a look at whatever delicious food Shiraishi had made, there was no way the sweet tooth would be able to resist. Or at least, he thought there was no way.
"Woah, this looks great Shiraishi! Do you mind if I have one? I can trade you something from my lunch if you want." Ohta asked as he saw the delectable cupcakes the girl had made, all with adorable patterns of flowers drawn on in icing. As per Tanaka's orders though, Shiraishi had something else she was interested in trading for.
"Actually, would you mind letting me look at your notebook in exchange for a couple of my cupcakes? I was hoping to copy some notes from when I was away from class the other day." Any other day, Ohta would've been fooled into loaning out his private notebook as soon as he saw sweets as good as Shiraishi's, but he was completely on-guard today, and he realised all too quickly that this whole set up was simply a ruse.
"Tanaka." He said as he turned to face his boyfriend, disappointment apparent in his face.
"You're resorting to bribery now? I didn't raise you to be like this!" Ohta exclaimed in a shocked voice, despairing at the lengths his boyfriend had gone to. Just like when he had watched as Tanaka completed his errand at the supermarket, feeling like a proud parent, now too, he had taken on the role of a father without even noticing it.
"You keep foiling everything I think of Ohta, so I had to try it! And wait, you didn't raise me!"
"Well, whether I did or I didn't, I'm still not falling for your bribery. I'm sorry Shiraishi, but I had just sat back down after buying some sweet bread at the cafeteria when you came in, and I think I'll be having that for lunch today." He proclaimed as he brought the bread out of his bag. Tanaka cursed inside his mind: 'Of course he had something sweet on him already, he's Ohta!'
"Sorry Tanaka kun! I guess it didn't work after all. And sorry Ohta kun, I shouldn't have tried to trick you, here, you can still have some anyway, Tanaka, you too." Shiraishi said as she offered the cupcakes to the two boys with a smile, and even though Tanaka was still a little bitter over his loss, he still took one and started taking little bites of it, slowly making his way through the sweet.
"I'm sure all this thinking and planning is tiring you out Tanaka, so how about this? You have one more chance, you can do it however you like, whenever you like until school ends today, and if you win, I'll show you my notebook. But if I win, you have to promise to wait patiently until Saturday. Does that sound good to you?" The blonde proposed, and as much as Tanaka didn't want to admit it, he was getting pretty tired.
"Ok, one more try. You'd better be ready Ohta, because I'm going to come up with a whole new idea! And it's gonna be the best one so far." The listless boy proclaimed with confidence, but before he did anything else, he had something else on his mind.
"If I have all day though, I think I'm going to have a nap for the rest of lunchtime. I need to get my energy back."
"You do that Tanaka, want me to wake you up in time for class?"
"Yes please." He nodded, before letting his head fall gently onto his desk and letting sleep take him for the next little while.
…
It was his last chance to see what was inside his boyfriends notebook. When it came time for class, Ohta had shook him just enough to wake him up. Whenever he was tasked with waking Tanaka up, the blonde always felt bad about it, but he knew that simply talking or tapping him on the shoulder would get him nowhere, so he started with more drastic measures. Tanaka had felt re-energised after his nap though, and he spent his time in class brainstorming ideas, until he came up with one that was both sure would work, and would also be pretty enjoyable for himself as well. It was almost the end of the day now, the final bell was set to ring any minute, but Tanaka wasn't worried; he had to get Ohta alone for his plan to work, so he had to wait until after classes, just before Ohta had to leave. As soon as the bell rang, Tanaka turned to his boyfriend.
"Ohta, you have a little time before you have to go right? Can you carry me to the roof? It won't take long I promise." He asked, and although it was clear to Ohta that this was Tanaka's last attempt to grab his notebook, he complied without any fuss, simply slinging his boyfriend over his shoulder and making his way up to the roof.
"You know, even if you win, I could just change my plans entirely. We could go to an arcade and play all the hardest games, then we could go to a batting range, we could even go ice skating! Wouldn't that be fun, Tanaka?" Even though he knew he was joking, just the thought of what Ohta was saying being a reality made Tanaka feel somewhat sick.
"Please Ohta, if you do that I think I would die from over-working myself. Although, I'm sure you could find a way to carry me while you do all that, right, Ohta?" The listless boy retorted, turning the joke back onto his boyfriend.
"I think if I tried to do that, I'd be the one who'd end up dying. Anyway, we're here now." He said as he lowered Tanaka off his shoulder and onto the ground in front of him.
"The notebooks right here in my bag, so whatever you've got planned you'd better-" And as he went to continue, he found himself cut short by the pressure of lips on his own. Tanaka stood on his toes, gripping Ohta's shirt and using it to pull himself up high enough to read the boys face. After preparing the whole afternoon for all sorts of possible outcomes, Ohta could have never prepared for this, for such an assertive Tanaka. He could barely hold his footing, taking a shocked step back the instant Tanaka had started kissing him. And while Tanaka had thought he had moved fast earlier today, he was now sure that this was the fastest he had ever moved, but it wasn't enough yet. It was too much work to maintain the height difference between the two and snatch the notebook out of Ohta's bag at the same time. As he continued to make his lips dance around his boyfriends, connecting the two's saliva as he did so, he also started to walk forwards, sending Ohta backwards until he stumbled into a bench and sat down, bringing the listless boy down with him. Ohta fell without much grace, but in this moment, neither of them cared. Tanaka sat straddled across Ohta's lap, one hand gently holding his boyfriends cheek, and the other resting on his hip, right next to the bag. He was so close, and Ohta was entirely distracted by the kiss, his eyes closed deep in blissful concentration. The situation was perfect for Tanaka, his plan had worked! Although, his plan had worked a little too well. Not only had Ohta completely forgotten about their bet, so had Tanaka. Even after he had grown short of breath and pulled his lips away, resting his head on Ohta's shoulder, he still didn't think to grab the notebook before it was too late.
"Well that was definitely worth coming all the way up here for." The blonde boy exclaimed, still having forgotten momentarily about the bet, and while he was not quite sure what had spurred his boyfriend into acting so forward and exerting so much energy, he was really happy that he had. However, Ohta's words made Tanaka remember all too suddenly why he had asked Ohta to bring them to the roof where they could be alone.
"Ah! I ruined my plan!" He yelled out, not really all that loud, but loud for him. In a last-ditch attempt, he tried to reach out for Ohta's bag, but he could barely lift his arm anymore, let alone do it before the blonde noticed him.
"Oh yeah! I can't believe I forgot about that! You just surprised me so much when you started kissing me! It was a good surprise though." Ohta exclaimed as he easily lifted the bag out of Tanaka's reach.
"I guess this means our date remains a secret until Saturday then?" The blonde questioned victoriously.
"I guess so…" Tanaka replied, annoyed that he had lost, but accepting the consequences.
"I know you're curious and all, but you don't have to worry. You know I'd never plan anything you wouldn't like. So just relax ok? It's what you're best at after all."
"Fine, I'll relax. And thanks for putting so much effort into all of this, I know you'll make it a great day." Tanaka agreed. On one hand, it was frustrating that he hadn't been able to beat Ohta. But on the other hand, everything he had done had been so out of character for him, and right now, he wanted nothing more than to just relax.
"Come on, sit up and I'll carry you home." Ohta offered with a smile, ready to help his boyfriend.
"Really? You said this morning that you had an errand to run after school though."
"It's ok, it can wait. Anything can wait if it's for you." The blonde reassured Tanaka, and as they made their way to Tanaka's house, with the listless boy now hooked underneath Ohta's arm, he was sure that no matter what was in store for him on Saturday, he would love it, and he would love simply spending time with the boy who took such good care of him.
