Chapter 2
As the Evans sisters grew up they remained close. Both girls made friends with the other girls and boys from school, but nothing came close to the bond between Lily and Petunia. They were still set out to be best friends forever.
Christmas was approaching in the small town where the Lily and Petunia grew up. They decorated the house in lights and put ornaments on the tree. Together, the two girls wrapped the presents they had made for their parents.
The girls and their parents spent Christmas Eve up at their grandparents house and played together as the hours passed by slowly. Neither girl could wait to get home. Santa was coming tonight!
Eventually they did return home. Lily and Petunia were wide awake with excitement now.
"You must go to sleep or Santa won't come." their father warned.
"Can we put out cookies first?" Lil asked hopefully.
"Sure dear," her mum said smiling.
Petunia and Lily ran to the kitchen to find some cookies and milk.
Lily placed the cookies on a plate as Petunia carefully poured a glass of milk.
Lily picked up the tray to take back to her parents, but Petunia grabbed her shoulder.
"Wait," she whispered. "I have a plan."
"What is it?" Lily asked.
"Want to see Santa?"
Lily's eyes went wide. "But I thought we couldn't..."
"Yes we can! Tonight, we'll stay up and wait for him. But we have to pretend to go to sleep for mum and dad."
Lily watched her big sister in awe as she carefully explained her plan. They'd go up to bed and pretend to go to sleep, and when 11:50 came, they'd get up, arrange pillows to look like they were still lying in their beds, and sneak downstairs. Then, they'd hide behind the tree.
Lily nodded along with the plan.
"Well goodnight Lils," Petunia said loud enough for her parents to hear. Then under her breath she whispered, "See you soon."
Lily giggled and ran up to bed.
Lily laid in bed trying to stay awake. It was hard, she'd had a long day. But the thought of seeing or perhaps even meeting Santa was enough to give her a jolt of energy to keep her eyes open wide.
The minutes ticked by and eventually 11:50 came. Lily quietly got out of bed and put her pillow where she had just been laying. Then she quietly crept down the stairs to find Petunia waiting for her.
"There you are! C'mon we have to get hidden." Petunia said softly.
Grabbing Petunia's hand, Lily dragged her behind the tall pine tree that they'd decorated with ornaments. The two girls laid down on the floor and covered themselves with a blanket so that they couldn't be seen. Both girls thought the same thing, their plan was perfect.
"And now we wait." said Petunia.
And they waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Silently, watching the clock the girls remained hidden from sight. Around 12:30 Lily began to drift off to sleep. Petunia shook her awake again.
At 12:40 Petunia became upset.
"He's not coming Lily," Petunia admitted.
"Yes he is." Lily said stubbornly.
"No he's not."
"Yes! He is!" Lily said loudly, still adamant.
Petunia clapped a hand over her sister's mouth and whispered, "We'll wait a little bit longer."
So they waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Finally at on o'clock there was a creak.
"It's him!" Lily squealed.
"Shh!" Petunia warned.
Lily and Petunia were silent as they watched. But it wasn't who they expected. No not at all. It wasn't Santa who came down, it was...their dad.
He was carrying an armful of presents. He carefully placed them all around the tree.
Lily and Petunia's jaws dropped.
Their dad left the room and came back with a few more gifts. He continued to do so until the tree was surrounded by presents.
Then, he knelt by the fireplace and patted some soot out. He ate the cookies and drank the milk. Then he went back upstairs.
Lily and Petunia crawled out of their hiding spot. They stared at one another.
Eventually, Lily broke the silence, "He's not real."
Petunia nodded slowly.
They were heart-broken. Santa Claus wasn't real. Petunia gave Lily a big hug, as she looked like she was about to cry.
Lily frowned deeply.
"Lils, its okay. So what he's not real?"
"But it was all a lie..."
"I know, but it's ok."
Lily was silent.
"We still have each other. And you can bet that I'm one hundred percent real." Petunia said smiling at Lily.
She looked up at Petunia.
"Thanks Tuney, you make everything better."
Petunia smiled.
"C'mon lets go to sleep. It's Christmas tomorrow!"
Lily frowned, "But there's no Santa..."
"There's still mum, dad, me and the presents!"
Lily smiled and followed Petunia up to bed.
Petunia tucked Lily into her bed and whispered quietly, "Don't be upset. I'm still real."
Lily smiled and drifted off into a well needed sleep.
