It was cloudy and rainy when I arrived to the quiet little town. Four days had passed since I decided to come to Forks and I was already regretting my choice. I missed Alex with all my heart and the simple thought of him staying in Washington just so we could be together pained me. I wanted to be there with him, watching him playing his guitar and smoking his cigarettes while I seated on his "settee" as he called it.
But now I couldn't go back because I was trapped in uncle Charlie's police car. He offered to pick me up at the airport and I couldn't say no, right?
"Bella is waiting for us at home. I hope she's not cooking dinner because I want to take you both to Sue's. Remember Sue?" I tried no to laugh at my uncle's attempt to keep an awkward conversation.
"Hmm, yeah, I think I remember her." I wanted to talk to him, give him a better answer but I was not capable of that. He felt like a stranger to me although we spoke on the phone twice a year.
"So, what really happened?" I finally asked, starring trough the window.
Charlie cleared his throat before speaking in a low voice. "Bella's boyfriend left her. He actually left town with his family. She didn't react very well." I tried to picture Alex and I in the same situation and I have to admit that it disturbed me a little. We had broken up before of course but we always ended up sorting things out. I loved him and he loved me. More than he loved his cigarettes.
I nodded, offering my uncle a sympathetic smile. "I'll try to cheer her up." Her heart was broken, I got it, but she shouldn't live attached to that person if he already left and probably moved on. "Thank you Eva."
We got home pretty fast for my liking. I was nervous, there was something odd about Forks… something that didn't feel right.
"Bella we're home!"
"I'm in the living room." A female voice said and I instantly pictured my little cousin. The house looked the same, even the walls were the same color as they were all those years ago.
A pale brunette girl was sitting on the couch writing in a notebook, while a boy did the same on the opposite sofa.
"Hey Jacob." Uncle Charlie greeted the boy that smiled to both of us. I just nodded, feeling awkward, waiting for my cousin to look at me. And that's what she did.
She looked older but still the same. She had dark circles under her eyes probably due to lack of sleep.
"Hi Bella." I said in almost a whisper, trying to smile but it felt like all of her sadness was contagious. I missed those times when we were young and used to play in the backyard. I wished we could have grown up together, we were so close… and now she felt like a stranger to me.
Bella smiled back and got up, surrounding me with her arms in a warm hug. I was not expecting that but her gesture made me happy. I hugged her back and the words escaped from my mouth "I missed you little cousin."
"I missed you too."
We heard someone clearing his throat and Bella looked at the boy who was now standing next to us. "Oh Eva, this is Jacob. Jacob this is my cousin, Eva." She pointed at both of us and I shook the boy's hand. "Nice to meet you, Jacob."
"You can call me Jake." He didn't look like the other habitants of the town, his skin was tanned and his hair pretty long and dark.
Bella must have figured out my intrigued look because what she said made everything clear. "Jake is a Quileute. He lives in La Push, in the reservation."
I left out an "oh" to clarify that everything made sense now.
"You should come with Bella sometime. We can show you the beach."
I don't know why but Bella didn't look very amused with the idea. In spite of it, I just nodded and headed upstairs to unpack.
When I woke up the next morning the house was empty. Bella left a note saying that she went out with Jacob and Charlie went to work. Great, so now I was all by myself with nothing to do. I decided to call Alex. I laid on the bed, starring at the ceiling and thinking about what I could do to entertain myself. I didn't have my car here so I couldn't leave the house. Well, I could, but my feet wouldn't take me very far.
"Hello love." I heard a voice on the other line. How I missed his voice…
"Hi. How are you?" I could stay on the phone with Alex all day but I would end up bored to death.
"I'm good. And you? How's Forks?" Alex always made a lot of questions, not that he was possessive, he was just a curious and excited person.
"I'm fine. It is really boring. Bella and Charlie left and I don't even have a car so I'll stay at home all day, watching tv probably…"
I heard a blow so he was smoking for sure. As always…
"You know, you should quit…" I started, getting a groan in response. "But I'm not going to bore you with my speech. Just wanted to hear your voice."
I left out a sigh, rolling on my side, now facing the door. "I miss you."
"I miss you too love. You'll be back soon."
I nodded, completely forgetting that he couldn't see me. "Yeah. I'll talk to you later. Bye"
I went downstairs, looking for something to do but the house was completely tidied up so I just laid in the couch. All day.
I heard noise and quickly realized that I had fallen asleep when I saw Bella, tiptoeing trough the room. "I'm sorry, did I wake you up?" she said in a low tone. "No." I yawned, feeling a slight headache.
"I'm sorry I left you at home but you looked so comfortable sleeping this morning that I didn't have the courage to wake you up." I chuckled, she really looked sorry for leaving me alone but I made clear that was not a big deal.
"I'm going to the cinema tonight, do you want to come? Jacob and Mike are coming too."
I ran a hand trough my hair and nodded. "Alright, sounds fun. Which movie are we going to watch?" Bella shrugged, sitting next to me. "I don't know, I allowed them to choose. Hope you don't mind. "Of course not, it will be fun." I smiled, trying to cheer her up. She actually looked a bit happier, maybe Jacob was helping her to forget her boyfriend.
"Can you help me to choose something to wear?" Wow, Bella asking me for help on a clothes emergency? Something happened, I knew it…
