Rayleigh made it to Sabaody in one piece, but the rest of the crew was a big question mark. After they both had gotten onto the island Rayleigh wanted to show his appreciation towards his savior. "Hachi, have you ever met a human before?" He queried. "Kinda, not really, no. That's why I thought, that if I saved you, you would want to help me... with something that I've been thinking about." He answered shyly while rubbing the back of his head. "What were you thinking about?" Rayleigh kindly asked, figuring that Hachi was pretty young still. "Are all, um, people, evil. Do they really hate fishmen as much, as Hody hates them?"
"Who's Hody? But no, I don't hate fishmen. If they give me a reason to dislike them, then I don't like them, but not based on whether they're a fishman or not. Who told you humans hated fishmen?" Rayleigh returned. It bothered him that such a young person would be taught that. There was a discrimination against fishmen in Sabaody, but he wasn't a native here. "Hody is convinced that humans are worse than the scum of the sea. They're weak and stupid. He said that we are the superior race. You don't hate us, that would be a first." Hachi tells him ending with sarcasm and attitude trying to act tough.
"Strength isn't everything. Intelligence isn't everything. It's not about who's better, but just being yourself. I bet you learned that people were dangerous, didn't you? Any how who sets the limits on what is the best? It's not a black and white world Hachi." Rayleigh's sage wisdom began an important process. Hachi realized that Hody was the ignorant one. Words like all, every, and never can have dire consequences. One exception, one rebel or one accident can unbalance everything.
"So humans are like us. Some are kind and some are not." Hachi continued. "Yes, and some are everywhere in between." Rayleigh finished with a smile. He didn't want Hachi to hate people, there are people who don't deserve that hate.
"I'd hate to break up this loving relationship, but what are you doing here? It's almost dark." A thin black haired woman called out. She directed her voice toward Hachi when she told him, "You. you should know better than to be here. With this island being what it is you're in danger." Darkness had arrived like an uninvited guest, seemingly enough like this woman. "Who might you be?" Rayleigh asked. "Depends on who wants to know." She countered taking a drag from her cigarette. Rayleigh had said this when he didn't want to cause trouble. She made her way toward the pair to see if they were anyone of special interest.
"You're a pirate too! There was a storm and I lost everything, but the clothes on my back. Is there a decent place to stay the night on Sabaody?" Rayleigh hoped that she wouldn't refuse, as he had just told her that he was broke. "You can sleep where you lay for all I care," She blew some smoke at him before she continued, "There are crews around here. When you run into them talk to them about joining." She said nonchalantly.
"Sweetheart, you can't be here. Where are your parents?" The lady asked Hachi gently. "I don't have any." He said with steel in his voice. "Oh, why don't you stay with me tonight?" Hachi could go home. Home to a broken down house that would be a death trap with all the other kids inside of it. Plus it would take a while to get there and Hachi didn't know if he would make it that far.
"I'd like to." He answered honestly. "I'm Shakuyaku, but you can call me Shakky."
