Chapter 2
"James, Lily, it is the worst type of magic there is. It is a pure abomination of everything that magic is supposed to be."
The married couple stared hard at the man before Lily started, "Sirius, if it is so bad, why do you even know…. Wait your family."
With a bark of a laugh helping to break a little bit of the tension, he replied, "Lily, let's just say that the only thing that any of the Blacks learned about it was that it was absolutely never to be done and if one encountered such an atrocity how to possibly destroy them." Upon saying this he gained a distant look before turning back to his friends. "I will be right back, I believe that this requires me running back to that pit I used to call home and see if I can find the book that talked about them."
As he started to get up James called out, "Sirius are you sure? I know you haven't been back since you moved out several years ago. What if you end up running into your mother? She could be there."
After a pause to consider his friends words, Sirius replied, "This is much greater than my lack of desire to be back there. Trust me, this is something that must be done."
With a quick goodbye with the promise to return soon, the man quickly made his way out of the door and apparated away.
Moments later, he reappeared in front of what appeared to be a grandiose townhouse, the one and only number 12 Grimmauld Place. Taking a deep breath to collect himself and to give him a moment to collect his thoughts, Sirius made his way up the steps before knocking on the door and entering the home of his youth.
He quickly noticed that not much had changed with the troll leg umbrella stand being placed directly next to the entrance. For some reason he could never figure out how such a few strange or dark artifacts could turn what would normally be considered an elegant domain into something much less desirable to live in. Before he could walk fully into the entrance hall, the familiar features of his mother appeared in front of him if not a bit more aged than she looked the last time he saw her around four years ago. Before he had the opportunity to speak, she started in on him, "YOU DISGRACE OF A SON, HOW DARE YOU SHOW YOUR FACE BACK-"
Not letting her get on a roll with one of her infamous rants, he cut her off, "SHUT YOUR MOUTH WOMAN!"
Being caught off guard by her son's reaction, Walburga found herself at a loss for words, her mouth resembling a gaping fish. Before she could regain her composure, Sirius continued in a commanding voice allowing no room for interruption, "Now you will listen to me and you will listen closely Mother. I have had enough of you and your fanaticism towards someone that we have no idea the origins of. LOOK AROUND YOU! You have claimed time and time again that this so called Dark Lord is the salvation for our family and for our society as a whole. You have claimed that through his leadership and guidance that our family would ascend beyond the so called greatness that we were already at and become as if we were GODS! WHERE IS THAT SO CALLED GREATNESS NOW?! LOOK AROUND YOU! Our family has become a mere shell of what it used to be because of your constant drivel about the so called greatness of purebloods and how any and everyone else is beneath us. HA I doubt that bastard that you demanded our family bends the knee too is even a pureblood or else why would he be hiding behind an obvious farce of a name?
No, do you know what he has given us? You know what your poisoned words have rewarded us with?! DEATH. The death of your husband, my father. The death of the vibrant women that we knew Bellatrix and Narcissa to be. The death of your brother and sister in law. Aunt Cassie, Grandfather Arcturus, and all of our other family members that aren't around anymore. But do you know the worst of it? Do you know the most recent death of them all?"
At these words, the older woman began to pale as a cold chill swept through her body as she realized where he was going with things. She started to mumble "NO" over and over as she fought to regain the sense of self control that she had been taught to maintain ever since she was just a little girl. However, nothing she could do was able to override the dread and sorrow that was overwhelming her as she slowly sunk to the ground, tears streaming in currents down her skin.
"Yes, I can see it in your eyes, you have finally realized where I am going with this." Sirius said in a low tone of voice, barely containing the unwanted tears that were drawn up from his tirade. "That bastard killed my little brother. He took little Reggi from us."
Finally the woman completely broke down feeling as if her entire world had collapsed around her. Without saying another word to her, Sirius made his way past his distraught mother and up the stairs to the family library. As he regained control of his rampant emotions, he started looking through the many tomes looking for the familiar title that used to give him nightmares. After what felt like an hour, he came to the conclusion that the title wasn't amongst the books there and had an epiphany that his brother may have had them in order to double check that what Voldemort had was indeed a horcrux. With that thought in his mind, he made his way to the younger Blacks room.
Upon opening the door, he saw his mother sitting on the bed with a letter clutched in her hands with tears still escaping her eyes occasionally. When she noticed his entrance, she fixed him with a stare, unbridled fury scarcely hidden in her eyes. "Is it true?" She demanded. "Did he do such a filthy thing?"
Remaining silent in the hopes that it would force her to reveal more without having to disclose anything himself, Sirius maintained a look of complete apathy. With Walburga's question not being answered, her temper finally caught up to her as she continued, "DID HE MAKE A BLOODY HORCRUX!"
Sirius stared hard into her eyes as he replied simply, "Yes."
The letter was almost torn as the dark-haired woman's hand clenched into tight fists. She tried to fight the building anger but nonetheless began to shake as it threatened to release itself. Finally she whispered out, "Do we have any proof?"
The oldest son slowly reached into his pocket pulling out the charmed pouch. Carefully he levitated the contaminated artifact from its safe container and in front of his mother. Her eyes slowly widened in shock as she realized just how priceless of an artifact was tainted by her once idols actions. At that point it seemed as if all of her anger and frustration and grief came to a head converging into a single intense form of pure hate as she suddenly whipped out her wand yelling "AVADRA KEDAVRA!"
As the last syllable left her lips, an intense jet of green light shot forth from her wooden stick, striking the locket in its center causing it to blast into the bedroom wall. Suddenly a crack appeared in its center as a black smoke-like substance poured out letting loose a blood-curdling scream before it suddenly disappeared startling the two humans in the room.
Finally, the two looked back at each other. "Mother, I am going to do what needs to be done. I will take the title passed to me by my grandfather and become the Lord Black. That bastard has taken away enough from this family and it is passed time that we take back what was once ours. The Black name will not only be spoken as a simple curse or as if it is something only being worthy of being a stain on society. Our family will become respected once again. We will regain the power that we once had as being one of the founders of our society and we will no longer bend a knee to anyone. This I can promise you mother. If you can't accept that, then you better to be ready to get out of my way, because I will do everything in my power to make sure that piece of trash meets his end. That is the least that I can do in memory of my brother. For if it wasn't for him and his sacrifice, I wouldn't even be here right now and you would be rotting away in your miserable excuse for a life with only at best Kreacher for your sole company." Sirius proclaimed.
As Walburga studied her oldest son and took in his words, she slowly realized that this is a son she could be proud of, this is a son that could take their family to new heights. So she stated, "Lord Black, where you lead, I will follow." Receiving a simple nod of acceptance in reply.
A/N: Let me know your thoughts. Oh I know that some of you will be wondering if this will be more Sirius centric and the answer is yes and no. He will get a good amount of screen time so to speak but Harry will still be the go to for the story. That being said, all that has happened so far is critical to how the rest of the story will play out.
