A/N: Before you continue to read this fic, I just want you to know that it was written around one of the items on the list (doesn't matter which one) and that I wrote it with the thought of showing another side of Shawn. One that's always existed, but no one has ever seen. So, you know, just keep that in mind.
Previously: "Okay," Henry said, "I'll give you that."
Henry looked back down at the list.
□ 2. Find something to care about.
Shawn was two for two. Again, Henry was shocked. This time, because it would seem that Shawn had truly put some thought into his list. Yeah, it was all horribly vague, but that wasn't the point right now, was it?
So, the question now was: had Shawn found something to care about?
This question was a little tougher to answer. As Henry thought about it, he started to poke at his food with his fork. He took a bite and mid chew suddenly he stopped.
Of course. Animal rights. Shawn loved animals, always had. When he got into his teen years, he had even participated in some animal cruelty protests. And, it had all started coming about when he was twelve. Which meant that it had happened after he had written the list.
Henry looked around him. He needed something to write with. Quickly, he stood up, grabbed a pencil off of the counter and sat back down. Then he proceeded to make two check marks on the list, for the first two items.
Okay, so the next item was:
□ 3. Try something new.
…
No.
Shawn may have had over 57 jobs since high school, but Henry refused to give him a check for quitting. For failing. If Shawn wanted a check, it was going to have to be for something else…anything else.
Henry looked around the room, as if it would offer him up an answer. There had to have been something that Shawn had done. He couldn't explain it, but he needed to finish this list, he needed for Shawn to have completed something. To have accomplished something. Even if Shawn didn't remember the list, he was going to complete it. Henry would see to that.
He was just about to give up and go onto the item, when he caught sight of a partially cut up pineapple.
And there it was.
If Henry remembered correctly, which of course he knew he did, it was about a month after the list, that Shawn had tried pineapple for the first time. Up until that point, he had refused to try pineapple, because it looked so weird, but for some reason, that day, when he saw Henry cutting one up, he had tried it.
"Congratulations kid," Henry said as he made another check. "You're three for three."
Even though the first two items had surprised Henry, this one shocked him.
□ 4. Make a life-long friend.
What about Gus? At that point in time, those two had been inseparable.
Henry had to think a little bit harder about this one. Why would Shawn write that as the fourth item on his list. Truthfully, Shawn already had a life-long friend in Gus (if Gus wasn't in it for the long run, he would have left a long time ago) so, technically, Shawn already had a check for this one. But before Henry gave it to him. He needed to know why he wrote it as a goal.
Although he wouldn't put it passed Shawn to put something on a list of goals that would be a cinch, he didn't think that that was the case here. No, he just had to think deeper.
It worked. The list had been written around a time where Gus and his family had considered moving away. It made perfect sense that Shawn would want to have something to do with friendship on his list. Why he didn't just put "always stay in touch with Gus," Henry didn't know. But either way, Shawn got a check.
□ 5. Find purpose in my life.
Of all of the things that Shawn had put on the list, Henry truly hadn't expected anything so deep or soul searching. Had Shawn really written this list? Because he wouldn't have written anything like it even now in his life…..and that was the answer to this item.
Now…
…Psych. If anything had given Shawn's life purpose, it had been that. For so long Shawn had floated about with not a care and no purpose, but Psych had instilled something in him. Shawn hadn't ever stuck with anything for so long, and he still didn't show any signs of quitting.
"One more item to go," Henry said, checking off the second to last box.
"Dad."
A/N: Okay, so part 3 will up, hopefully tomorrow and it is the last part in this story. And thank you to all who have read and reviewed.
