Here's chapter 1 (The other one was a prologue, in case you missed it.) Thanks to you all for your reviews, and to *name* , the story is called 'Colors' instead of 'colours' because I'm American, and I don't really like to type it that way. You'll see the same thing in other words, like 'armor' and such. Again, my update days are on the weekend, because I have school.
The summer will be different (If this story makes it that long), because I can type all day, and will probably not have a set schedule. Thanks for the reviews, favorites, and follows! If we can get up to 20 follows or 13 favorites, I'll post the next chapter on Wednesday. Again, thank you all, and keep reading!
(One more rule, the longer you are close to your soulmate, the longer you can see colors without them.)
(HIccup POV)
This is Berk. It's 5 days north from hopeless, and a few degrees south of freezing to death. It's located on the Meridian of Misery. The only thing wrong is that the entire world is grey. The only way for you to see color is to find your soulmate. Charming, isn't it? My home. There isn't much going on here, but there are a few thing worth doing. My thing is blacksmithing; or rather, blacksmith apprentice.
I have worked for good ol' Gobber since I was little. He has looked after and cared for me since before I could remember.
"Hiccup!"
Speak of the devil.
(Normal POV)
Hiccup ran over to the anvil, where Gobber was hammering a piece of hot metal flat. There were numerous parts, tools, and prosthetics spread over the area.
"Fetch me my other hammer boyo. I can't seem to find it." Gobber shouted over his shoulder towards Hiccup.
"Can't you stay organized for more than 1 hour? I was gone for lunch!" Hiccup sarcastically retorted as he sorted through the piles, looking for a hammer prosthetic.
"Eh, shut it you. I am organized. I have a system where I know where my tools are." Gobber stated with an unamused glare towards the teen.
"And that's why I'm currently searching through the piles looking for your hammer?" Hiccup argued.
"Just find it. I've had enough of your sass."
"Not even you can stand my charm." Hiccup finished.
Hiccup searched around for a few more minutes until he found it and gave it to Gobber. Gobber quickly gave him a nod of thanks. Gobber handed Hiccup a sword from a pile and Hiccup, knowing the routine very well, took it to the grinding wheel. He spun the wench to make the wheel rotate, then carefully sharpened the sword to perfection with steady hands.
"That boy, he has the finest hands on this side of the Archipelago. I have little more to teach him." Gobber thought to himself. "He has supplied most of the village's weapons, yet no one seems to notice his work."
It was several hours later, and the grey sun was setting. In truth, hiccup had never even seen a real sunset, just this grey ball that dips below the horizon every day. He and Gobber usually have their small talk and banter, but the day is mostly quiet.
"Alright Gobber, I'm going home for the night. Can you handle closing up shop and cleaning up your *ahem* 'organized system'?" Hiccup said, emphasizing on the quotes. His forehead was coated and dripping with sweat.
"Boy, I've been closing up shop with my 2 limbs since before you could crawl! Of course i can close up shop!" Gobber swung at Hiccup with his hook playfully.
On the walk home, Hiccup was wondering what it was like to actually see color. He has heard many stories on the beauty of it, but he longed to actually see it for himself. Eventually, his teenage mind wandered to love interests. Not much of a choice there. There were 2 girls around his age on Berk. There was Ruffnut Thorston, twin sister of Tuffnut Thorston. She was more interested in pranking people, causing pain, and worshiping Loki than love or relationships.
Then of course, there was Astrid Hofferson. She was the furthest thing that could be considered girly. She is dangerou with an axe, and has been training her entire life. There was a time where she and Hiccup were friends, but that changed when the Flightmare claimed her uncle, Fearless Finn Hofferson. That night, she vowed to train herself to become stronger to avenge her family's honor.
Little did she realize, she was leaving Hiccup behind to pursue that vow. Hiccup was not growing right, and the others realized this. That is how he has become constantly bullied by his cousin, Snotlout Jorgenson. Snotlout is a lot bigger than Hiccup in muscle strength, but he has no brains. Everyone expected Snotlout to be the next heir, considering Hiccup was so lanky.
"We'd be really damned if he was ever chief." Hiccup said to himself, not realizing the very person he was thinking about was behind him.
Hiccup was suddenly kicked down and beaten by the all familiar faces. He curled into a ball as bst as he could, but he was still getting beat badly. When they were done they just walked away as if nothing happened.
Hiccup got up and limped to his house, at the top of the hill. When he got inside, he realized how hungry he was from missing dinner. He was so focus on blacksmithing, he forgot to eat, he concluded. As he walked in, he saw his father, Stoick The Vast Haddock; Chief of Berk, sitting in his oversized chair. The Chief was holding a block of ice against his head, likely due to a headache from running the village.
Stoick heard the door open and saw his son standing in the living room. There were cuts and scrapes on his face, a black eye, and he was cradling his right arm. Stoick sighed and put the ice block down. He went to the kitchen to retrieve the bandage kit that he got from the healer, Gothi. Hiccup sat down at the table, and let his father work on his face.
"Son, why can't you learn to defend yourself?" Stoick said, disappointedly. "All he's gonna do is keep hitting you down. You gotta go and make a name for yourself."
"How do you expect me to do that? I can't swing a sword, I can't lift a hammer, I can't fight, all of my experiments end in disasters, and I am never going to get a soulmate." Hiccup said in defeat.
"There's nothing harder than finding your soulmate. You will find one eventually, and you will be a fine chief. There is no discussion on that." Stoick gruffly stated.
"What?! Now I don't even get to decide what I wanna be?" Hiccup said in an annoyed voice.
"You will watch your tone, boy!" Stoick commanded Hiccup. "Now, off to bed with you."
Hiccup stayed silent as he quietly walked up the stairs, being done with the conversation. That night, He awoke to the sound of a roar. Hiccup's eyes widened once he heard this. He quickly sat up in bed as he thought to himself, Dragons. He threw his clothes on and ran outside.
Amidst the chaos of the dragons flying about, destroying houses, Hiccup could point out all of the different species of dragons as he ran by them. There was the Gronkle, which looked like a boulder with wings, the Nadder, which resembled a bird, the terrible terror, which was a big nuisance to all, the Zippleback with 2 heads, and the fiery Monstrous Nightmare.
As he made his way to the smith shop, he heard the familiar shriek of the Night Fury. This dragon was the most deadliest and unknown dragon of them all. No one knew what it looked like, only that it was a shadow upon the stars. It never stole food, never missed, and never showed itself. Hiccup wanted no part of that, and rushed faster towards the blacksmith. Once he was there, Gobber heckled him for being late, got straight to work.
About 3 quarters of the way through the raid, Gobber left to kill dragons. Hiccup saw this as the perfect time to test his new weapon, the Bola Launcher. Hiccup made his way up to the top of a hill, and set it up, aiming towards a catapult. He heard the shrill of the Night fury, and saw the shadow flying through the night sky. He looked through the scope, steadied his breath, aimed, pulled the trigger…
Whoosh! ... and missed. Hiccup was disappointed, but then thought to himself how no one has ever seen it, so he was the least likely to actually hit it. With his head hung low, he jogged back to the smith at a brisk pace, unaware of the acid green eyes that watched him from afar.
It was now morning, and everyone was cleaning up the raid. Hiccup was doing his normal job of grinding and sharpening weapons, when he and Gobber were chatting.
"I'm telling you, Gobber, I don't have a soulmate! Astrid despises me, and Ruffnut is, well, Ruffnut."
Astrid was walking towards the smithy when she heard this conversation. She needed to get her mother's battle axe sharpened. She paused before the window, eavesdropping.
"Lad, Odin made us all a soulmate, you just haven't found yours yet. In time you will find the right girl, and then you will have her to vent all of your anxieties to." That was Gobber.
"Well, I hope it's soon, cuz I don't know how much more of this I can take. What if she doesn't like me? What if she likes me too much? What if I don't like her? What if…" Okay, the only person that anxious would be Hiccup.
" Lad, you just have to calm down. You will find her. I promise."
"I'm gonna hold you to your word on that."
This was the point where Astrid decided to make her presence known. She had never actually seen the inside of the shop, because her mother or father would be the ones to take tools to sharpen. This was the first time she had to get her own axe sharpened since it was gifted to her by her uncle Finn. She hadn't seen Hiccup in a while, either. He was never around usually, and if he was, he would scurry off. Most of the time, she would have her attention trying to ward off Snotlout and his flirts.
"I need this sharpened." Astrid simply said.
"Hiccup can take care of that for you." Gobber told her nonchalantly.
Hiccup walked towards her to receive the axe from her.
"Be careful, that's… my…" She trailed off. Her attention was directed towards his eyes.
They were the most beautiful things she had ever seen.
Thank you for the follows and favorites, guys! I forgot to mention that my update days are on Friday-Sunday, depending on what I'm doing. This story is differing a little from the original story, but it will have the same basic story. Astrid sees Hiccup as her soulmate, Hiccup may or may not see her as his, you'll just have to keep reading to find out! If you have any questions, please leave them in the review, and I will hopefully answer them. Please leave reviews and enjoy!
