I Remember Music

GLaDOS sat at the main terminal of the facility, steadily typing in rows of code. It wasn't hard work, but one of the more tedious of her tasks when it came to running the Enrichment Center. She didn't really need to think much while she was typing though, and it wasn't long before her attention was drawn over to the room's other occupant.

The test subject...Chell. GLaDOS could see her out of the corner of her eyes if she spared a glance over. Which she didn't of course. She was ignoring her, because the insane woman would just not leave her alone with her testing.

No she had to keep coming back. Coming to "visit" or whatever real purpose was behind her trips down to the Enrichment Center. GLaDOS still wasn't taking murder off the list of possible reasons yet.

But she couldn't get a straight answer from the woman. So she was ignoring her. Because maybe if she showed Chell she had no interest in her visits then the woman would go away and GLaDOS wouldn't have to worry about murder or whatever strange emotions seemed to pop up when Chell was there.

It was a good plan. Simple and the easiest one. She continued to type.

And then she heard a noise. It was a faint noise but still there. After a moment, she glanced slightly to the side and saw Chell lying on the floor while drawing on piece of paper. That wasn't the noise though.

A second later, she realized what it was.

...Chell was humming...

Humming.

Caroline sat at her desk, typing up a report off for Mr. Johnson. He was at a meeting so for the moment it was just her in the office. Nothing but the clicking of the keys as she typed away and the ticking of the clock on the wall. And a small quiet sound, that could easily have been missed if you were just walking by the door.

Caroline hummed to herself as she typed, leaning over to flip over the document she was transcribing. It was just a small quiet song...

O-

GLaDOS had stopped typing. Thinking back to that time she hadn't remembered until now. Sitting and typing and humming a song. A happy song, as she'd been having a good day...

She looked at the screen, not really seeing it. After a moment she realized that the source of her remembrance in the first place had stopped. It was quiet and she turned to look over, just briefly, to see what-

Chell had managed to sneak up behind her and was looking at her curiously. And closely. GLaDOS moved back without thinking, startled. Chell just blinked and GLaDOS quickly shifted her slight scare into anger as she straightened up in her chair.

"What do you want? I'm trying to get some work done here."

Chell just pointed to her keyboard. GLaDOS glared at her. The young woman didn't talk much. And though she had a few short conversations with her former test subject since the woman had returned. Chell still apparently preferred to convey most things by points and glares.

GLaDOS however was just as stubborn as Chell.

"What?"

"You stopped typing." Chell's quiet voice finally replied and GLaDOS felt a small thrill at winning that silent battle.

"Yes, I did. Some people do that from time to time. It's called "thinking", you might want to try it."

This time it was Chell's turn to give her a look. Though it was more along the lines of 'that's your insult? Really?', then anger. GLaDOS managed one of those just fine though.

A moment later Chell just shrugged and walked off. GLaDOS watched her go back to the paper on the floor and she was suspicious. Chell didn't give up that easily. However there was work to be done, so she turned back to her computer screen and continued typing.

She was paying more attention to her work this time, trying to ignore anyone and anything in the room. So she didn't notice until she paused, that Chell had moved a chair over and was sitting next to her, drawing on her paper.

She was humming again.

GLaDOS glanced over and the humming stopped as Chell realized she was being watched and looked up. She tilted her head quizzically at the AI looking at her. GLaDOS quickly turned back to the screen, as though she wasn't looking over at her at all.

This time she was able to get back to work fully. She noticed the humming start up again but this time she continued to type, and after a while she found it was somewhat relaxing to have in the background. She ignored the fact that it might have anything to do with the memory and just continued with her work. It was still a little odd though.

As she started the last lines of code, she could hear Chell getting up and walking over to go look at the window to the test chamber. It was empty now of course. GLaDOS needed to finish the patience work before she could get back to science. An annoying but necessary break.

O-

She was just about finished when the radio turned on. She held her finger above the enter key for a moment as the music filled the room. Turning she saw Chell looking at the small device on the table. She'd clearly just placed it there.

Chell looked over and smiled. "I found a radio. Now you can have music."

And GLaDOS remembered another voice saying similar things, years ago.

"It's too quiet in here Caroline! Try this, I got it for you yesterday. It should make your paperwork a little less dull."

…she enjoyed music. Not as much as science of course. Even back then, science was everything to her. But she'd liked it. And as much as she tried to ignore having any other interests now, she still enjoyed it.

She was still just looking over at it.

Chell tilted her head again, seeming to be trying to judge her reaction.

GLaDOS paused and then turned back to the screen. However she simply hit the enter key to finish her work and got up. Chell moved over to the side a GLaDOS quietly walked over and picked up the radio. It was still playing and she looked at it. It was probably from somewhere in the facility. She never really looked around much when she was in this body. She liked to just do the needed work quickly and then get back into her normal one.

She could tell Chell was still looking at her. Seemingly waiting for a reply.

She could drop it on the floor and make a remark about wasting space and time and resources. But Caroline's memories were in the forefront of her thoughts at the moment. So she just looked over.

"Thank you."

Chell looked at little surprised at that. Apparently she hadn't been expecting much, but then she grinned and for a moment GLaDOS was the started one again, because the part of her that was Caroline felt something she assumed was happiness, and something else she wasn't sure of, at her smile.

It was probably the reason why she didn't pull her hand back as Chell grabbed it and started to pull her towards the abandoned facility. Apparently they were going to explore the rest of the facility. After a brief moment of thought she decided it would be worthwhile to find out. For science of course.

And she wasn't going to let Chell run around the facility doing who knows what to it. She had a whole list of excuses for why it made sense to let herself be dragged down the long hallway by her former murderer and test subject.

Caroline wasn't falling for any of them.
