Chapter Something

BLAZE P.O.V.

As soon as we got home from the pizza place, Tyler carrying the box of untouched pizza, Ms. Whitewash herded me and Midnight up that stairs and into our bedroom and began going through our closets and dressers. She tossed Midnight knee length khaki skirt, a pale pink top, a pearl necklace, lacy white socks, pale pink shoes with heels that looked about an inch and a half or so tall, and under stuff. She went over to my side of the closet and withdrew a pale pink shirt marked with dark pink polk-a-dots, a white skirt, and a pair of white dress shoes like you see toddlers where to church. She quickly strode over to my dresser and seemed to have trouble settling on a pair of white socks with pale pink stitching and beads around the top a girly underwear. I blushed when she hesitated before adding a bra to the stack.

"This sucks," I remarked as we got dressed. Midnight nodded in agreement but said nothing.

Once we were dressed, COM steered us into the bathroom and did Midnight's hair into a high ponytail and painted her face. She braided my hair into pigtails and dug out a different set of make up for me. Lucky for me, I'm younger than Midnight so I don't get quite as much make-up.

The next afternoon, we were actually allowed to check our emails that had been set up for us by the school. Supposedly, it encouraged healthy social skills and the email accounts would be used later in the year for writing assignments. I wasn't expecting anything, but I actually had one email.

From: Nico

To: AnnieWhitewash Burguson'

Hey Blaze,

I swear to you, this is going to drive me crazy. Noah's already going nuts. He misses Midnight. I do too. I mean, I miss you.

I'm not good at this whole email thing.

Anyways, it was good to see you and Midnight today. Hopefully you won't get in too much trouble with your nutso mother.

I'm not really sure what else to put in this. Sorry.

-Nico

P.S. I miss you

Midnight P.o.V

While Blaze was trying to scratch the paint of our walls I went down stairs to find our mom. I saw Tyler sitting on the sofa.
"Tyler, have you seen mom?"
"Yeah, Mel, she's outside in the back with the guys installing the pool." I winced when he used the nickname my siblings, who we'd lived with when Blaze was really little, used to call me. I went outside where I found her.
"Mom?" she turned around and saw me.
"Melissa, do you need something?" she asked looking confused at the lack of Blaze.
"I was just wondering if it'd be okay if I hung out with a friend of mine while Bl-Annie is on the computer." She hesitated.
"It isn't one of those boys from that camp is it?" She asked suspiciously.
"Nope." She nodded and gave me the keys."

When I walked in the small coffee shop I scanned for the now familiar blonde head. I saw her sitting in the back with her back to me.
"Hey, Annabeth."

"Girls, you start school next week so I went ahead and brought home a check list of clubs, sports, community activities and electives for you to check what you wish to participate in. A woman from the school will be here in ten minutes to pick them up to set up your schedule," Ms. Whitewash said. "I have already told her that you will both be selecting one elective, two sports, one club, and one community activity and I will look over it before we give it to her to make sure I approve."

"Fine," Midnight said. Ms. Whitewash held out the two forms on clipboards which we grabbed and sat on the couch to fill out.

"What are you checking?" I asked Midnight after I looked over the options. Since we went to an expensive school for 'troubled' kids there were lots of weird options.

"I dunno," Midnight said with a shrug. "She'll disapprove of everything I like."

"MOM!" Tyler suddenly yelled and Ms. Whitewash went running towards his room.

"Hurry!" I said, and Midnight and I quickly went through the options. I checked band as my elective, teaching art lessons as my community activity, and robotics as my club. I looked over sports and two caught my eye. The first was boys' ice hockey, but I checked that anyways. The second was a bouldering team intended for high schoolers which I checked anyways as well.

"What did you sign up for?" I asked my sister.

"Robotics, figure skating team, cross country, band, and life guarding," she said.

"Nice," I said before a thought occurred. "We need to kill the doorbell. When the lady gets here, COM will hear it ring." Midnight nodded and chewed her bottom lip. I shoved my clipboard at her. "You forge her signature on these and I'll kill the doorbell."

"Got'cha," Midnight said and went off in search of a pen.

I hurried to the front door and looked at the doorbell. It was pretty basic, a white covering and a rectangular button in the center with screws at the bottom and the top. I jammed my thumbnail in the top screw and twisted until it was loose enough for me to pull out. I rotated the white covering so it was out of the way and dug around in the electrical panel until I found the wire. Realizing I didn't have anything to cut it with, I quickly looked around the concrete porch and recognized the old cement plant pot that had been in the same spot on the porch when Fluffy was born. It was cracked in several places, especially around the bottom. I picked up one side and began repeatedly dropping it until a sliver that was about half the length of a pencil and as thick as a penny was wide broke off. I quickly grabbed it and went back over to the doorbell, using the rough end of the sliver as a knife until the wire was cut. I dropped my makeshift knife, put the doorbell back together, and hurried inside.

"Ne," I whispered to Midnight, just in time for someone to pull into our driveway. She tried to ring the bell, which obviously didn't work and lightly knocked on the door. Midnight quickly answered it, told her our mom was upstairs with Tyler, and handed her our forms which had been signed in black ink. The woman accepted them before leaving and Midnight and I high-fived as the car drove away.

Mission success.
