Chapter 2

Martha felt a drop of water hit her nose. The black woman glanced up in the cave. It was supposed to be bone dry, yet it wasn't. The group of scientists were supposed to be preparing for the particle collider to be tested. Then again something fishy was going on.

Her mate Julia had gone missing. Research showed that several other workers were missing as well. They had all checked into the medical clinic and were supposed to make it to a nearby hospital. She had rung them up and the nurses reported that they never received any sort of information about the transfer.

Which left Dr. Jones extremely suspicious. Going by UNIT books, the woman knew she couldnt actively open an investigation as all records on their side looked perfected. Not to mention she didn't want to tip anyone in UNIT off. Hence why she had called in a third party- Torchwood.

Her friends in Cardiff needed to get out of Wales for a bit and it was a good reason.

"You aren't waiting for Jack and co to arrive, Dr. Jones?" Pulled from her thoughts, the woman pivoted, behind her was her mysterious helper.

"You!"

"Me!" He retorted with a half smile. His outfit for the day compromised of a black vest with a maroon shirt underneath. His trousers were also black, his converse looked similar to the pair that the Doctor wore with his blue suit. "Its a pretty dangerous world." Where last time his hair had been unnaturally straight and spiky (like The Doctor), he had stopped off somewhere and gotten a haircut. It was a close shave and bought out his cheekbones more, he looked handsome- for a teenager.

She wasn't amused and glanced around them. "How did you-?"

He cut her question off by flashing a familiar looking wallet. "Psychic paper. Greatest stuff in the world, can get you into anywhere."

Her eyebrow rose. When she looked at it now all she saw was a blank white paper. It was hard to believe that piece of paper, more like scrap paper, was able to become anything the user needed at the moment. When the Doctor had shown it to Shakespeare she had fallen for its trick. It was nice to know that she no longer had that fallacy. "And what does that say for you?"

"I'm an intern here on behalf NASA." He shrugged. "There are more here and the invites were sent out separately so without contacting the US directly..."

No way to prove it, went without saying it.

It amused Martha. "You're half alien, got psychic paper, and those trainers are a dead giveaway...you know the Doctor. I reckon even related to him."

He quirked an eyebrow and put away his wallet. "Oh?"

"If he destroyed Gallifrey, it's a question of your parentage. You're half human on your mum's side. Is she...was she a companion of his? Did you out live her?"

Martha stopped talking. There was a time and place for her questions, in a cave that neither of them should be in was not it. Her mysterious helper didn't look to...upbeat. It was like her questions had dimmed a light.

He finally gave her a humorless smile, "You are too brilliant sometimes."

The doctor reached out and closed the space between them. She gripped his shoulder and forced him to look at her. "Mhmm, we aren't leaving this room until you explain yourself. Let me rephrase that," Martha walked away from him and sat on the ground. She crossed her arms and let a determined look cross her face. A sense of deja vu washed over her. "I'm not leaving."

"You'll be in danger." He attempted to argue.

She replied with silence and a stony glare.

Sighing, he glanced around before walking over to where she sat and leaned upon the wall. "My father actually connected with my mother in situation similar to this." Part of his handsome face looked sad. "My parents are dead." He finally admitted. "A while back a rift opened in London. We were there and fighting the Cybermen and Daleks. Something went wrong a few months later. The rift had opened again and a woman had appeared. She had been looking for "The Doctor". At first we had assumed she meant my father, except she hadn't. She was a displaced dimension hopper and was looking to get home." He paused and glanced at Martha.

He offered a small smile to her concern glaze. "So you're part Time Lord, that explains a lot." Martha muttered to herself. "Who was the woman? I imagine the effects of creating a rift is dangerous."

"At one point in time Dr. Jones, creating doors between dimensions was child's play to the Time Lords. They had the power to do so."

"The person you are referring to was human though." If it was a companion of the Doctor, more than likely she was human. Martha wondered what would happen if someone started ripping wholes into parallel worlds.

He clinched his fist. "She was. Imagine each parallel world around us, all unique because of different decisions, as little bubbles. Now imagine someone without the knowledge on how to keep those bubbles from popping, just blasting through them."

So many lives, Martha thought, so many lives would be lost.

"The walls between dimensions protect them from collapsing. The walls control the time stream of each world. Destroying the wall damages time and eventually that time collapses upon itself."

The doctor covered her mouth in horror. If she hadn't known that, nevermind the fact she had never speculated the importance of the walls, the woman was literally committing genocide. "The wall to your world, its damaged?"

He ran a finger across the desk. "No, my father and I fixed it."

"How do you repair a tear in a wall?"

His brown eyes met her's for the first time during the conversation. "It boils down to creating an equal reaction or in layman's terms- sealing the hole."

Martha frowned, "Are you saying you're from a different world or do you belong here?" It was a clarifying question. He could be describing future events to her or saying he was trapped in a parallel world.

He stared at her with absolute determination, it reminded her of Adeola's own look, "A parallel world. Martha Jones, my grandmother would lecture me about minding my manners, my name is Nathan. Nathan Jones-Smith."

Martha raised in eyebrow, "Jones-Smith. As in-"

"Hello mother." He teased with a half hearted smile. Her jaw dropped. "Technically, parallel mother. And I suppose I don't have to call you mother. You aren't one now, it may weird you out. I haven't figured out why you and fath- The Doctor aren't together here. That was really puzzling and it makes me-" Nathan cut his self off and looked towards the pathway of the cave. The walls were lit by lanterns.

Martha covered her mouth and really looked at him. She could see his parents. "Have you ever...regenerated?"

Nathan tilted his head, "No. This is my natural face. Dad wasn't sure whether or not I would have the ability...but she told me I could. She showed me how."

"Your mother?" UNIT's medic asked.

Nathan chuckled, "The TARDIS. My home, our home. Those conceived within her walls have a special connection with her."

Martha was relieved to hear that. The TARDIS has a special place in her heart, that ship had made her time...magically, as corny as it sounded. "Who was the woman? Why do you think your parents are dead? Why not contact the Doctor?"

Nathan shrugged, "I was more worried about you." He offered her his hand. "They might as well be dead as I have no way to get back to them." Martha gripped his hand, and used it to help herself stand. "The woman's name was Rose Tyler." There was a hint of bitterness when said that name.

Martha felt goosebumps run up her spine. That bitterness had been in her voice for a moment when she used to speak of Rose Tyler, now it was gone. She wished the Doctor and Rose the best, that they would find each other again...b-but that was crazy. Could it be her Doctor's Rose?

"She's from this world." Nathan continued, his voice calm. "I looked into it not long after I realized I was trapped. That's why I sought you out and not him."

Martha stared at him. "You're angry with him. He's not your-"

"He's not my father. He'll never be my father. My father knew when to let Rose Tyler go home. He knew when he met my mother he had met someone special. Their time apart while she finished her studies? He learned that he was capable of missing her more than any of his other companions bar Susan and Romana."

The doctor wasn't sure what to do or say. His grip on her hand hadn't relaxed. Without a word Martha watched as he put coordinates into his vortex manipulator. "Wait, where are we goi-"

Her words were cut off as they landed in a heap outside of a wardrobe.

"My mother was enticed by my father to come aboard the TARDIS after Uncle Leo's party went to hell. He told me that while she walked around the console, as she asked about...him, he had been intrigued. She asked about his race, his planet...but it was on New Earth that he decided to see how close to mum he could get. She had forced him to talk about Gallifrey, the Time War...she didn't judge him. She was like a healing salve calming an infected wound."

Martha felt Nathan's hand slide from hers. He walked over to the wardrobe and opened it. "I...I hope you can do the same for me Dr. Jones."
