leafs nation: If that's what you think, then maybe you're already fooled ;)
Drexbann15: Yes, I agree that it is a huge ime skip. I went through many different ideas, and figured that I would need Clementien to be a bit older for what I have planned. And thank you for the OC! Im quite excited to use him!
Red Eyed Rabbit: OMMIGOSH STOP BEING SO NICE! :D I love you!
Now, ONTO THE STORY!
I sighed and looked up at the blue sky. It was clear, very blue and full of white, puffy clouds. Its been missing birds though. For awhile it has. I secretly miss the chirping songs they would sing and the sound their wings would make then they took of for flight. I wonder if there are any around. Maybe they're further up north or something. I don't know. It probably doesn't even matter.
"There you are!" I heard Edith. I turned my head to look at her. She offered me a smile, "Need to tell you something."
I rose an eyebrow, "And that would be?"
She took a seat next to me on the bench I was on. It was made of bricks and rather uncomfortable, but it was better then crying like a big baby in my hut and wallowing around in self pity. Plus, people left me alone so it was fine. They think I don't know, but they don't like me. And I guess its fine, considering I don't like them either.
Edith scooted a little closer and lowered her voice to a whisper, "Now, I don't want you to freak out or anything, but Dawn saw some 'suspicious activity' out by the back gates."
Her warm breath hit the crook of my neck, leaving a trail of goose bump's down my back. My eyebrows knitted in confusion, "Suspicious activity'?"
"Yeah," She gave a nod, "Thought she saw some people around there. But you know how Dawn is, people probably means two squirrels and a dove."
"Oh," I responded, eyes traveling to the ground as I focused on listening to her, " And what do you think?"
Edith looked around, eyes blinking a few times which indicated that she was actually thinking about it, "I don't know, I've had a bad feeling lately."
"Could be anything," I scoffed, "You're just being paranoid. Dawn is too."
She shrugged, probably half and half about the situation, if one could call it that, "Probably. I wouldn't put it past us. I just wanted to let you know."
"Thanks..." I said, not paying much attention.
Edith didn't say anything in return, just left and muttered something under her breath that I hadn't made out. Didn't even really bother with trying either. It was probably something along the lines of, "yeah, just be careful." That sounds like her. I just looked back up at the sky. My mind went into rest mode, and did what it usually did when it did that. It started thinking of all possibilities. What if Dawn was right? What if something happened? What if something bad was going on? What if...
What if was a rather dangerous thing.
I stood up, dragging my feet a bit as I walked towards my hut. I entered. It didn't take much thought to remember where I had kept what I was searching for was. I lifted the bottom half of my sleeping bag and moved it a bit, making sure that it stayed out of my way. I moved my hand around in the dirt, feeling carefully for the indent that was suppose to be there. A small smile spread my lips wider when I finally found it. I dug my hand into the earth, shoveling dirt out scoop by scoop. It wasn't long until my fingertips made contact with the cool, metal handle of it.
I took the knife into my palm, scrubbing some of the earth from it with my thumb as I lifted my hand to get a better look at it. There was the small fingernail slot, which I ignored and just lifted the blade open with my other hand. It clicked, locking the razor in place and making it ready to use. I turned it a bit, letting a little amount of light gleam from it.
We weren't allowed to have weapons inside Wellington. And I actually mean NO weapons. There were no baseball bats, shattered glass, gardening tools, hard sticks or rocks, and big, metal poles. Hell, even butter knifes were suppose to be kept track of by the people in charge. When I asked Edith why, she just said that there was an incident once and people ended up dying. Not that it was much of a surprise. But I managed to steal one of Edith's (She held those kinds of things in check. it was her job.) from her when I was eighteen and started being on my own. I didn't use it or anything, just a safety precaution.
I mean, if something was about to happen, then I would want to be armed.
But the question: Where to hide it?
Boot? No, it would stick out. Sleeve? No, it would fall. Put in my bag and just keep it on me? No, to suspicious. Dammit. Why don't I think these things through? I felt around, thinking something would just magically appear. Which it did. I felt my coin pouch. Yes, I kept one on me. Wellington recently started using money again (which was nothing more then bottle caps) and that's where I kept mine. The jingling sound wouldn't be to out of the ordinary, and it was a rather baggy pouch.
Better then nothing.
I untied the pouch from my belt and opened it, fitting it in as best I could. When I had done that, I just put it back on like how it was before. I smirked, happy that I had done what I did. No one would know a thing, I am rather sneaky after all.
"When was the last time we ever went on a run?" Dawn asks as she looks upon the big pile of rations.
I was sent here to help her organize. The big pile we had in front of us was nothing compared to the enormous stacks that were kept in the moving truck that was in the back of Wellington. Always locked, that truck. And of course, Edith has the key. It was actually a pretty bad lock, could probably break it really easily with a hammer or even a sturdy baseball bat. Then again, there are no weapons in Wellington.
Returning to the conversation, I shrugged, "Who know? Didn't Gary and Kelly go on the last one's?"
"I think so," She agreed while grabbing one of the black crates that were also on the table, "I think they're the ones who mostly did that. But who cares? We have enough to last us for a year or two."
I started putting the canned peaches in the crate, with Dawns help of course, "Not if we keep bringing people in."
"C'mon now!" She lightly scolded, her brown hair hanging in front of her soft face, "Don't be like that. We'll eventually get Kathy to construct us more room. We'll probably have to tear the wall and then put it back together, but we can do it."
Having finished filling the crate, I grabbed the other one, "More people means we need more food. Where did we even find this much?"
"I don't know," She opened a can of peaches for herself, "I think everyone who built Wellington each had their small portions. Then people started going on runs and that brought even more bread to the table. And people who came already had their own and that was automatically brought there. Just a big cycle."
"Go figure," I sighed and handed the now full crates to Dawn, who was now stacking them on each other. I looked at her as I recalled what happened this morning, "I heard you're being paranoid again."
"It's not paranoia!" She quickly defended herself, "I fucking saw something!"
Sensing the hostility in her voice, I put my hands up in surrender, "Alright, alright. Calm down."
She sighed and looked away, "Sorry, but you know how I am. You're probably right... I'm just throwing this out of proportion. I'm sorry."
"It's alright," I repeated, not really seeing how she figured this was effecting me.
A small silence loomed over before she ran a hand through her hair and looked back over at me, "Hey, go find Edith for me? I need to hand these out and she said she wanted be to take watch. Please?"
I gave a small nod before leaving to do as she requested. I listened to the snow make its sound as I walked on it. Where might Edith be? She didn't have watch. She didn't have cooking duty. Maybe its her break and she's at her hut. That's my best guess. I started walking faster now that I knew my destination. I was nearly there when I realized my boot was untied. I looked around before my eyes found the same stone bench Edith and I had talked on earlier this morning. I positioned my foot on it and began fixing the shoe laces. When I was done, I turned my foot around just to make sure I didn't have anything gross on it.
"Well," I mumbled to myself, "I guess-"
I was cut off from my self comment when a gunshot went off.
Im so sorry if this chapter was boring! Next should be better!
Thanks for reading and please review!
BATMAN OUT ;)
