James knew that Lily was going to run into Snape sooner rather than later; after all, Lily was taking Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts, two subjects Snape was sure to take this year. But he'd much rather she'd have to deal as little with Snape as possible, which is why he'd even continued with Potions. It wasn't that he was insecure with his relationship with Lily, it was more that she was still insecure about Snape.
Well, that wasn't entirely true. He was not completely secure in his relationship with Lily, because he still feared he might wake up to find Lily had had enough of him. But he was sure that if there was anything that threatened his relationship, it wouldn't be Snape. It was almost like Lily was afraid of Snape now and from what Lily had told him, James didn't blame her.
Which is why, despite all the crap he got from Sirius, he was glad for getting the Head Boy badge. He'd noticed the close proximity with Lily and Snape's carriage. It might have led to a confrontation between them than Lily had anticipated; seeing Snape for the first time in over a year was always going to be hard. So James was glad when he got to take her to the Prefects compartments at the front of the train.
"We were supposed to be at the Prefects carriage five minutes ago, Evans," said James. He leaned in to kiss her, to the wolf-whistles of his best mate.
Throwing his arm around her shoulders, he walked to the front carriages with the girl of his dreams. This would be a year to remember.
