Chapter 2: Gotta Shoot Hoops

Why is freaking book girl in my music class? I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. I just have to ignore her. I can do that, right? Of course I can.

"Soul!" I turned my head to see none other than Ms. Marie- who was smiling like an idiot.

I walked past Maka towards my teacher. "Hi Ms. Marie, how was your summer?" I smiled.

"It was great! I volunteered at DC Music to help give kiddos piano lessons! It was really fun."

"That's really cool- are you still giving lessons? If you are, I could help if you wanted." I rubbed the back of my neck.

"Yeah I am! And really? That'd be great!" She leaned close to my ear, "I've been trying to teach one of the students from this class all summer- but she's really struggling."

I looked around the room, "Who is it?" She pointed to the piano near the back, and sure enough, Maka was sitting there on the piano bench.

"Her name is Maka. She's a really sweet girl- and she's extremely smart. She believes that she can learn to play if 'she puts her mind to it,' but as I said before, she's struggling."

You've got to be shitting me. Out of all people, it had to be Maka. And what does she mean by sweet?

"So do you think you can help me Soul? You're unbelievably talented, and I think this would be a good change of pace for you."

She waited a moment- "So what do you say? Are you up for it?"

I look over at Maka. She looks pitiful- tapping the keys like that. God this is gonna suck.

I close my eyes and sigh. "Yeah I'll do it." I mumble.

Ms. Marie smiles. "Thanks Soul. You're amazing. I'll talk to Maka about it and get everything settled. I'll call you later after school."

I nod and walk to my seat. Ms. Marie introduces herself and goes on and on about how 'We're going to have an amazing year!' and stuff.

I sigh and move my eyes over towards Maka and raise an eyebrow. She's intently listening to Ms. Marie- and even taking notes. Pfft- dork.

I shifted my arms behind my head and relaxed. Maybe this wouldn't be all bad.

I decided on walking home after school. It was too nice of a day to ride the bus- and I didn't really want to get in another argument with my seat thief.

I took my basketball out from my bag and started dribbling it on the sidewalk. I think I'm gonna go shoot some hoops.

As I was heading for the court, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out and sure enough, it was Ms. Marie.

"Yeah, hi."

"Hey Soul, good news! Maka agreed to take piano lessons with you!"

"Alright,that's cool."

"You'll practice with her every Wednesday at five. Is that okay?"

"Yep sounds good."

"Ok. Thanks again Soul- bye!"

And with that, she ended the call. I put my phone back in my pocket and sighed.

I can't believe I agreed to this.

When I got to the court, I was surprised there was no one there. It was good for me though- I could get a couple hours of practice time in with no distractions.

I would say I'm a pretty good basketball player. I can shoot threes like nobody's business. So that's what I started on.

I shot them from lots of different angles, and made all of them. I get really pumped when I play- I love the sport.

I then began shooting from half-court. Half-court was tricky- you have to put lots of strength in your shot. If you don't, the ball won't go far.

After about an hour, I started getting hot. I took off my shirt and went back to shooting from half-court.

I made most of them, but I missed a few too. I cursed whenever I missed- I hated missing.

I worked on my lay-ups, then decided to take a break. I bought a water from the vending machine, and took a seat on a bench.

I closed my eyes and relaxed for a while- until I heard a familiar voice.

"Justin, please leave me alone."

"C'mon babe, I miss you. I'm so fucking lonely without you."

I got curious and turned around on the bench.

There was some blonde kid following Maka. He looked high- and I could tell she was nervous.

"I'm going home. Bye Justin."

Maka opened her book and began walking away. Justin looked pissed.

He ran in front of her, knocked the book out of her hands, and slammed her against the cement wall behind them.

"Justin stop!"

"This is your fault bitch- if you wouldn't of left me, none of this would be happening."

I stood up from the bench, and grabbed my ball. I was infuriated. He has absolutely no right to assault her like that.

I started walking over towards them. "Hey bastard! Let her go!" I yelled.

He turned around, and fucking bared his teeth at me. He was definitely high.

"Get the fuck outta here." He growled.

Maka looked at me, then at my ball. She motioned to his head, and I understood. He started lifting up her shirt, and that's when I threw it.

It was a direct hit to the back of his head- and he collapsed clutching his skull.

Maka pulled her shirt back down- I could see tears in her eyes.

I knelt down and picked up her book.

"Are you okay? Here's your book-" I looked up, but I didn't see Maka.

I sighed and stood there for a while. "I guess.. I'll give it to you tomorrow." I whispered.
