A/N: So I finally wrote an update (yay me). Sorry for the long wait. I had a terrible time figuring out what to do with the story. The next update is in progress already and I hope I could update right away. For now, I hope you like this one. :)
Strong wind blew against her hair and the sky grumbled with a hint sound of thunder, as the dark clouds huddle up.
"...You're one of the greatest things that happened to me, Aubrey and I don't want to lose you. But these feelings are just too much and they're killing me inside..."
"So I guess I should be the one to walk away." She thought to herself. The strong gush of wind makes it harder for her to breathe. Tears kept flowing and she tries to control her sobs. She clenched her fist as she thought of taking all of those words back but she thought it's time for Aubrey to know what she felt. Her hand is shaking, her body slowly turning around.
She didn't say anything, not even good bye. She didn't even try looking at her, not even her feet that were frozen to the ground. She didn't want to see the look on Aubrey's face; if it was anger, sadness or anything that would hold a tight grip on her heart. She didn't know what to do or what to think because she was never good at things like this.
She did what she thinks she did best; Walk away.
*beep beep* *beep beep*
She groans at the sound of her alarm and scrambles on her bed, putting a pillow over her head as she tries not to hear the sound. She doesn't know if she's lucky enough that she woke up, which means she'll face another day trying to act somewhat normal or maybe the usual after leaving everything behind in Atlanta. It has been eight months since she left the place – left Aubrey. It was not easy but maybe it was the easiest way out of the situation, but also confusing because she never knew what happened after.
All she knew was she ended things which haven't even started.
Being not a morning person at all, she hesitantly got out of bed and groggily walked to the bathroom, mindlessly doing her usual routine. She wondered what would be the difference of this day to the others that have passed. She'd quit her job in Atlanta and now she got some non-music related job just something to get her by and pay the bills decently. She's only supporting herself anyway and it's not like she's seeing anyone or hanging out with co-workers. She's been living it low and quiet. It's lonely, actually but she doesn't think about it anymore, because what had happened before didn't leave her. It has been haunting her every single day and night in her sleep or sometimes suddenly popping up in her head while she works. Every moment, she wishes she had done another way about it but she's clueless. Taking it off from her head is difficult, especially that she misses Aubrey. She's getting used to it, to the constant battles in her head and heart, and all the stress.
She had to, or maybe take the other way – completely forget everything – but that's just impossible right now.
Walking through the busy streets of New York with a big cup of coffee in hand, wearing a coat over her white blouse partnered with a grey pencil skirt and the right amount of make up just to add some colour to her pale white skin, she made her way to a building, four blocks away from her apartment. While everyone's in a rush to get to where they're headed to, she took time in feeling the cold breeze of the morning through her skin and let the hot beverage warm her inside, balancing things to start her day fine.
A couple of greetings while entering the office got her out of her trance, nodding in return to be polite and a hint of smile. She still doesn't blend in easily with people, but at least she's not much of an awkward person anymore or so she tries. As long as she joins and talks a little in some of the group conversations, it suits her fine. She's not interested in the attention when she shares anything. She feels better with just observing and maybe listening to distract her with her thoughts.
"Morning. I see you're not in a hurry today." Reese greeted with a smile.
"I heard my alarm right on time."
"I guess you had a decent sleep, then."
"I think so." Beca put down her bag and coffee, sat down and looked at her desk before starting her job.
Reese is just one of those people whom she gets along with, surprisingly fine. Having one person to casually talk to anytime about anything under the sun is someone she can keep, but not too close. Beca thinks Reese understands it well and she doesn't try to annoy or push the brunette to blend in, lighten up or talk. Reese is cool and they're friends. She's the only one right now, actually and that's alright.
"Hi. You've reached Beca Mitchell. Leave a message."
For the nth time, she heard the same sound every time she tried to call Beca. She sighed, finally giving up in hoping Beca would answer her calls.
"Beca, I know you're not going to talk to me anytime soon, so I guess I better say the things I want to say now…" Aubrey pauses.
"I don't really know how to start. Those things you told last time, I never noticed them. I was oblivious, I admit that. I never knew you felt that way and it's good that you told me, but I never expected that things will result to you ignoring me and pushing me away…" The blonde's voice starts to shake. Beca, on the other hand, was crouched on her bed, hugging a big pillow. The brunette stared blankly ahead and tightened her hold to the pillow.
"I'm sorry for being like this. I don't know what to tell you. I'm afraid."
"You burst out and left just like that… But if this is what you need, I'm giving it to you." A tear escaped Beca's eye as she kept the straight face. She heard Aubrey sniff and sighed heavily.
"I hope that we'll have a chance to clear things up. I don't want to say good bye, Beca. I'll be waiting." The message ended and tears continued flowing while the brunette kept still in her bed. It went on until she fell asleep, tear stains on her cheeks.
Being busy and focused at work made the brunette oblivious about time. She felt every hour is just passing by. Beca's out with Reese at a café, eating lunch and having a light conversation.
"I swear, if Matt won't shut up, I will make him." Beca smirked while chewing as her co-worker ranted about another officemate.
"How? By pushing him against the wall and kissing him?" Reese scoffed.
"No! Never in my life will I do that. That's just disgusting, Beca. How dare you."
"The guy obviously likes you. Why won't you give him a chance so he'd shut up?" Beca took a sip of her coffee.
"I don't like him. That's all."
"He seems like a nice guy."
"Well, not for me. He annoys the shit out of me."
"You're annoyed with all of the guys that have interest on you. I don't know if you're a man –hater or just gay." Beca chuckled lightly. Reese was taken aback and blushed but recovered instantly.
"I'm just picky." The blonde took her glass of water and drank.
"Whatever Anderson." The brunette stuck her tongue out.
"Shut up." Reese rolled her eyes. "Hey, are you free tonight? It's Friday and there will be a band playing at Walter's. I heard they're good."
"I'm planned to stay home and take home some office works, and maybe make a sequel of my gummy bear snapchat series after." The brunette shrugged.
"You're a nerd." The blonde playfully swatted her arm making Beca laugh.
"What? They're a hit!"
"You just eat their heads everytime, Beca."
"That's the best part."
Reese threw a peanut at the brunette but the petite woman remained smug.
"You should come with me so you'd stop being a weirdo. You're slowly losing your mind."
"My gummy bears will miss me, but I guess I don't have a choice since the grumpy bear told me so." She sighed. Reese stood up and went to the brunette.
"Let's go before I kick your ass."
"You love it."
The blonde locked arms with Beca as they went back to the office. They continued bickering and laughing until Reese paused just at the main entrance of their building. A truck was parked and men are moving in some new office desks and other appliances.
"Hmm? I think there's new office in the building."
"Yeah? What floor?"
"I don't know. Perhaps the same floor as ours or the one above us."
"Looks like a big office." Reese nodded.
Break time is almost over. Beca nudged the other woman and they entered the building. When they got out of the elevator, they noticed the busy men around, fixing the other empty space.
"So they're sharing the floor with us then." Reese said.
Beca observed for a while, looking for nothing in a particular. She saw a logo; the new office's logo perhaps. She frowned.
"Hey, why that face?"
"Nothing. The logo is just familiar. Let's go."
Reese said nothing and let the brunette pull her to their office on the left side, going back to their desks. The elevator dinged and a woman got out of it, talking to someone on her phone.
"Yes, sir. They're setting up. I'm already on it. The office will be ready in a day or two… Good bye, sir."
The woman placed her phone in her purse and walked to the right side. She surveyed the place and pursed her lips. She went over to the corner where no one works, right at the glass window. She crossed her arms and looked outside, staring at the buildings far away. She sighed lightly.
Everything is going well as planned.
