"The fuck do you mean no?! Do you know who the fuck I am?! The shit I've done for you in the past, and this is how you return a fucking favor?!"
Melony sat in the bathroom, alone as she listened to every word her partner yelled across the phone. Looking out the small window, she could see Loly outside, pacing back and forth angrily. Her long black pigtails swaying back and forth with every step, and her fist shooting out into the air every now and then. This was her third time losing her cool over the phone with one of their contacts. More than likely due to their less than willingness to help the two most wanted people in the world. It was normal for her to lose it pretty often, but it was never this intense. The blonde scratched her head in deep thought, wondering how all this came about.
Eyes the color of basil looked back down to the little sheet in her hands, looking at it for what must have been the tenth time since their arrival to the club. Skimming through the messy notes, she laid her on the cool tile wall, hoping it might ease the headache coming on. The plan was nearly perfect, she'd thought of almost every possible if that could have come into play. The entry point was secluded, they were hitting every check point on time, and all the staff were in the right places. Just when she thought she's accounted for everything, her partners' trigger happy behavior crumbled the rest of the plan to dust. Suddenly yanked from her inner musings, Lolys' angry foot steps could be heard making their way back to her stall.
"That son of a bitch dipped out on us! Talking about how we were too much of a 'liability', and how it could be bad for business and shit! The fucking nerve of that guy!"
As Loly went on to explain in her own 'colorful' way how their contact rejected them, Melony sat deep in thought, numbers scattered through her mind. She was considering how much money and time it would take them to get to a safe house and the 'lay low' time. She really had never anticipated that something like this might occur, and the sudden sense of panic at the idea that she might not be able to think her way out of this one was a scary thought. She knew that her brash partner would be looking for an answer from her about now. Taking a deep breath, she only hoped she could ease both of their nerves.
"We still have other contacts that we could get in touch with. Less favorable ones, yeah, but we're not really in the position to complain. If that falls through, we could always ask for a favor."
She couldn't see her due to the door being shut, Melony could feel the furious look Loly had on her face right now. Eyebrows scrunched together tightly, eyes wide, and fist clenched so tight that she'd make herself bleed were her nails any longer. Sensing the coming argument , she could do nothing about the storm that was about to blow right through her.
"Favors?! From one of these sons of bitches?! No way some motherfucker is getting my time and work for free!"
Her head in her hands, Melony tried not to let the screaming get to her. She could feel the pressure compounding in her chest, and Loly knew that this was something that set her off. So it should have been no surprise when the blonde swiftly cut her off to make some valid points.
"I'd rather not offer any of these pigs anything either, but at the same time, look at this from a logical stand point. We don't have all that much money left, our safe houses have probably been compromised, and even if they haven't, we're still to far to get to any of them smoothly. "
Unfortunately, the blondes' outburst was a surprise, and Loly wasn't having it. Even if the answer was right in front of her, she'd find ways to argue it up to such a ridiculous level that the other party would give in. Alas, Melony was accustomed to this, so she had to think a little harder than normal when arguing with her.
"And we can't stay here why? Not like they're really gonna tell us otherwise, I practically bought this joint with my own money."
She could hear it in her voice, she was fighting a losing battle very poorly. But she knew better than to assume that meant that she was going to back down. Loly would have to see it so painfully clear just how fucked they really were, and Melony was more than happy to enlighten her.
"So you didn't see the way they looked at us when we walked in? It's not the same look as when we were on top of the game and a step ahead of the rest. It's a look of fear, fear for their own goddamn safety. That last job was a shitstorm, the heat's on more than what they all are comfortable with. We are targets, and by being in the same facility as us, they've got heat too!"
It was never this hard to get her to see the point, she was never this bull headed. Melony hoped that she could get some reason to sink into her partner, so they could move on. As fate would come to have it though, Loly wasn't about to let her younger, less experienced partner tell her what they could and couldn't do.
"Who are you concerned about, us or them?! Making them targets my ass! Do you really think I give half a flyin' shit about them?! And just so you're aware, that last job was not that damn bad!"
Loly was being tuned out now, the blonde unwilling to continue the banter. This is how it always started, and she feared, how it would always end. Melony giving into her just so that she'd stop being upset. Truth be told, she never liked seeing Loly like this, typically staying away from certain triggers. But as her partner left the bathroom to go back out to the club, Melony could feel a doubtful creep its' way up to the forefront of her mind. There was a small, very distinct voice there, asking if there wasn't a way to end this. With her only walking in the shadow of her best friend, never really working beside her, but rather for her.
Whipping out her phone, she dialed an old number, one she thought she'd never have to call, but kept just in case of such a time. The raspy voice on the other end answered leisurely, yawning frequently.
"Well hello there little Melon. Didn't think I'd be hearing from you again."
"Yeah well, you know how life is funny like that."
"Yes, life can be very tricky in its' journey. Speaking of tricky, how goes your relationship with Lollipop?"
There was a short pause, only Melonys' heavy breathing could be heard before she continued.
"It is what it is."
"Good answer. So, based on what I've seen and heard from basically everywhere at this point, I can only summarize that you two are in a bind for shelter."
"Good to see that you're still watching TV, and here I thought you'd go senile all by yourself in that big house."
Chuckling followed by a small coughing spell followed Melonys' light attempt at a casual conversation. After clearing their throat, the person on the other end sighed heavily.
"Now see what you've gone and done? You trying to set a record for killing people over the phone or something? Anyway, I've already looked into some places for you two to lay low for a time. It's not an awfully large list, even with my insistence, there aren't a whole lot of people waiting with open arms if you know what I mean."
They proceeded to go down the list, naming off one place after another, explaining the pros and cons of staying there, the amount of time they could spend there, and how much it would cost them. So far though, Melony was doubtful that any of those would appeal to Loly, as she liked to be as independent as possible.
"What the hell happened to our world? What ever happened to going off the grid for a couple months out in the woods somewhere? That sounds so much better than just about all those places."
Again, there was a short pause. She could almost hear the reluctance in their tone when they spoke again. Whatever they were about to say, it was something that should be considered seriously.
