The next day Finn wakes up to the sound of thunder, and rain falling on the roof of the tree house. He gets out of bed sleepily and walks into the kitchen where Jake is already up cooking an omelet. As they sit down and eat, Finn asks the question that he couldn't keep out of his head since they had walked princess Bubblegum back to the Candy Kingdom.
"Did you remember seeing princess Bubblegum staring at me? You know, when we were walking back to the Candy Kingdom?" he asks Jake without looking up from his breakfast. "What? No I wasn't paying any attention. I was too busy thinking about coming back to the tree house and going to bed. That adventure left me wore out!" He ate a big bite of his ham and cheese omelet. "I remember her staring at me, I could barely see her out the corner of my eye but I knew she was looking at me. I wonder if she likes me." "Hold up right there! Now she's a princess and you don't need to get into anything like that! Besides, you don't need to be thinking about girls right now, u need to be adventuring with me. Stay away from girls man, especially her." "Yeah, I guess you're right. She probably doesn't like me anyway. She was probably just staring at the clouds or something. I'm no good for her." "Now hold on Finn you're plenty good for her, but you need to be focusing on adventuring right now. You need to focus on keeping the land of Ooo safe from evil." "I know man. But I just got that feeling you know? I've always kind of liked her, but I never thought she liked me; And now that there's a chance she might like me I… I just get this feeling inside my stomach, and I get all happy. I don't know man, I wish I could talk to her." "I know how you feel" Jake says understandingly. "That's how it was with me and Lady. Even though I don't think you're ready for it, if she does like you, I say go for it. But remember that she's a princess and her needs are more than that of a normal girl. And if you get shot down, I'm here for you ok?" "Alright, man" says Finn, now eager to talk to princess Bubblegum again.
They finish breakfast and start out for the Candy Kingdom, unaware that princess Bubblegum had left a little while earlier towards their tree house. When Finn and Jake reach the Candy Kingdom, they walk through the crowds of candy people, mulling about the streets, talking amongst themselves. When they reach the castle they are greeted by Peppermint Butler, who informs them that just a little while ago princess Bubblegum had headed for their tree house, to thank them again for their bravery in saving her. "Why don't you stay here and wait for her arrival?" says Peppermint Butler, opening the door and beckoning them in. "She is sure to be back when she see's that you two are gone." "Sure we can wait here." says Finn, walking into the candy castle.
Princess Bubblegum watches the tree house come into view as she walks through the grass to meet Finn again. She had to conjure up all of her courage to come meet him again. She was wondered how things would go, if she would have the chance to tell him or if it was just be the formal thank you's and sitting down for tea. She wanted to tell him, to let him know how she felt, to spill out all her feelings before him and he understand and agree that's how he felt too. But it was all uncertain. "He probably doesn't like me." she thinks. "He saves me because I'm a princess and I'm in trouble, not because he loves me. Why am I even doing this." But she still goes on walking, walking towards the tree house that holds the boy she loves, the boy who is brave, and kind, and handsome, the boy who for years had just been a friend that was always there to save her from trouble. But now he was something more, much more. The feeling she felt when she was around him was not just the feeling of a friend, but of something different, more complicated and unique. As she walked towards the tree house she got more nervous by the footstep, and she started shaking a little. When she reached the front door she was trembling, and it took her a moment to conjure up the courage to knock. But when she did nobody came, and nobody answered. She knocked again and stood for a long time there waiting for a response, but none came. So she sat there, waiting for them to come home from their adventure or wherever they were. She didn't mind sitting there, because she knew that when he came home and she could see him walking towards her it would all be ok and she could thank him and tell him how she felt. So she sat there and waited a long time, but she began to think he wouldn't come, and just as she started walking back towards the Candy Kingdom, she could see him coming over the horizon, the sunset casting a long shadow in front of him. Then she began to run, she ran and ran until she got only a few feet from him and stopped, and just stared into his eyes, and he did the same. They stood there for a moment like that until he asked why she came. And she began to tell him the reason. The real reason. And he just stood there and listened, and when she finished he muttered "Me too."
