Nyx glanced down at the papers in her hand, absently adjusting the strap of her bag over her shoulder. The papers in question consisted of her school schedule for the semester, a map of Cloud Tower, and a school manual.
Nyx looked back up at the dorm door before her, room number 313. According to her papers, she would be roommates with a witch named Selina Blake.
Inhaling deeply, Nyx pushed the door open. She was immeadiately greeted with the sound of a loud bang from one of the two rooms on either side of the common room.
"Dioses arriba!" Nyx exclaimed, slapping her hands over her ears, "What's going on?!"
From the door to the left of the common room, a girl with long white hair stumbled out, smoke trailing after her. She coughed, fanning her face to clear the smoke away. She frowned, squinting green eyes at Nyx. She coughed once more and cleared her throat.
"Hello," the teen spoke. She looked over her shoulder, "Kanika! Selina! The new roommate is here!"
A moment later, from the room the white haired girl had come from, a girl with lavender hair stepped out. The door on the right of common room cracked open, before a girl with bushy green hair entered.
"Uh," Nyx blinked. "Hi." She adjusted the strap of her bookbag for a second time, "Um, which one of you is Selina?"
The girl with the green hair waved, a small smile on her face, "That'd be me. You must be Nyx, my roommate."
"Yeah, I'm Nyx," Nyx's shoulders relaxed just a fraction. Her eyes flickered to the other two females, "And you two are...?"
"I'm Veronique," the girl with white hair stated. She gestured the lavendar haired girl, "This here is my cousin, Kanika."
"Hi," Kanika said, flatly. She turned on her heel, "I'll be in my room if you need me."
Classic witch behavior, Nyx thought, watching her go. She barely flinched as Kanika slammed the door.
"Kanika isn't exactly one for social interaction," Selina said.
"You get used to it," Veronique agreed. She offered Nyx a small smile, "So, Nyx... where are you from?"
Nyx bit her lower lip, What do I tell them...
"I... grew up with my brother in Magix, but... he never told me where we were really from," Nyx said, the half lie slipping from her mouth easily enough. "So, I guess I'd say from in nearby Magix City."
"You have a brother? Is here? Did he drop you off? I'd like to meet him-" Veronique was quickly cut off.
"Had," Nyx snapped, shortly. "Had. He's... dead, now. Has been, for a few years."
"Oh..." Veronique blinked, "My apologies. Were you close with him?"
"He raised me," Nyx shrugged, shoulders tight. "He was the only family I ever knew."
A heavy silence fell over the room. Selina cleared her throat.
"Why don't you get settled in, Nyx?" Selina asked, "We'll be glad to show you around the school, once you're finished. Ah, that is, if you'd like us to."
"Yeah, I'll even drag my cousin in on the tour," Veronique readily agreed, thankful for the change in subject.
Nyx hesitated, shifting from foot to foot.
Come on, alley cat, you gotta open up to people. We're not gonna be in your life forever, you know! Nyx sighed at the voice from a distant memory in her mind. You gotta learn to make friends that aren't villains.
Nyx allowed a small smile, "Sure... I'd like that. Give me an hour, and I'll be ready to go."
