When Ivan told me about Naullah and the other boys I knew I had try to rescue them. For Sarah's sake I had to try. I had to do whatever it took. I had to risk my own life. Which at the time, I didn't feel would bad if I didn't return.
"Drover?"
I turned. "Naullah!" I went to him and hugged him tightly. I felt a tear slide down my face. I was so relieved he was alright, that at the boys were.
"Where's Mrs. Boss?"
There it was, the dreaded question. I didn't want to tell him. I didn't want to say the words out loud.
"We can't say her name anymore little mate." There I said it. I said it, therefore all the hope I had that she was alive somehow, had vanished.
Losing my best friend only added to the heartache. Again I wished that it would have been me not him.
I watched Naullah sit at the front of the boat with his harmonica playing the rainbow song that Sarah and Flint taught him. Normally when he played it, it was a joyous thing, but not that morning.
As we returned to the mainland Naullah stopped playing. He gazed hard onto the dock. There was a figure was running toward the end. "Mrs. Boss! Mrs. Boss!" I heard Naullah yell.
My heart sunk. He truly hoped and believed that figure was Sarah. He jumped off to the dock and took off running. I helped tie the boat then went up to where Naullah was at. I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
There standing in front of me was Lady Ashley. Sarah, she was alive. I wasn't too late after all. I still could tell her all what I should have long before now.
I was frozen staring at her. But somehow I managed to move and then she was in my arms. Alive, well and in my arms.
"It's not forever Sarah."
"I know." She looked down. I could see tears start form. I walked over to her. I put my hand to her face and wiped the tears. "You still got me, Sarah. You always have me."
She looked into my eyes and smiled.
"I love you Sarah." I whispered. More tears sprung to her eyes and her smile widened.
"I love you too Drover."
And then we sealed out first saying "I love you" with a kiss.
End
