CHAPTER 2:
They drove to Gordan's house, Skulduggery was driving because he was, as usual, possesive about his Bently. She had rolled her eyes, but let him drive anyway.
Gordon's estate, for it would always be his, even after she turned eighteen, sat situated across a humpbacked bridge and on top of caves that are home to monsters that feed off a sorcerer's powers.
As soon as she opened the door and punched in the code, Valkyrie dropped her coat and bag in the middle of the living room floor, collapsing face first into the sofa. Skulduggery didn't bother picking them up, he just sighed, pulled out his one and pressed the call button.
" Hey Tanith, can you pick up pizza? No, I don't care what kind. No anchovies. Yeah, bring it to Gordan's house" Skulduggery glanced at Valkyrie "We need to talk. Yes, I know I can't eat. Yeah whatever, just bring pizza" He hung up and took off his gloves, hat, and folded up the jacket and putting it all on the table. "Tanith's bringing pizza if you're hungry." Skulduggery told Valkyrie, she looked up from the couch cushion. He was scanning the titles on the shelves.
" I know, I heard you and yes, I am hungry. I haven't eaten in a week."
"Quit exaggerating" he said without looking at her.
" Fine in days"
"I'm so sure"
" No, really, when I was gone for the five days I didn't eat at all"
"Really?"
"Do you think I would lie about something as serious as child hunger?"
Skullduggery thought about it for a moment. " Probably not" he decided eventually.
"Did you worry about me?" Valkyrie asked slowly.
Skullduggery looked up, a bit startled. He straightened his jacket and made a noise like he was clearing his throat even though there was nothing to clear, or even a throat to clear from for that matter. " I knew you were okay"
Valkyrie raised an eyebrow and Skulduggery sighed "All right if you want to know the truth we were all worried. We didn't know were you were and we tried everything to find you. Tanith thought you were dead, and I guess, I guess I thought you were too, but I didn't want to give up hope. I didn't want someone else that I cared about pay for my mistakes."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make any one worried, I just didn't want anyone to get hurt and none of this was your fault." Valkyrie said.
"I understand Valkyrie. Hope is a really powerful and dangerous feeling along with love, hate, and rage. When you left, I felt every one of those."
"Really, you felt love for me?"
" I didn't say that" Skulduggery replied defensively, crossing his arms over his chest and leaning against the table.
" Yes, you did and don't worry, you're my best friend, so I guess that means I love you too."
It was at that moment that Tanith decided to come in. " What about me?" she asked innocently holding out a pizza box. "Do you love me?"
" Tanith!" Valkyrie cried leaping off the couch, grabbing the pizza and wrapping her friend in a hug.
" Val! You're back!"
"And alive" Skulduggery chimed in triumphantly. "You owe me fifty bucks"
"Yeah whatever" she said waving him away and dug through her back pocket, found a fifty dollar bill and handed it over.
"Wait you guys bet on whether or not I was alive?" Valkyrie demanded.
"Well, I wouldn't say bet" Tanith said glancing at Skulduggery, who shrugged and looked back at the shelves.
Valkyrie opened the box and attacked a piece of pepperoni pizza.
"Don't eat too fast" Tanith warned "or you'll get really sick"
Valkyrie nodded and gulped down another pizza.
Okay...this chapter sucks. Ah well, read and review!
