Meeting The Family/He Can Sing?
"Today's the day." Inuyasha thought as the carriage pulled up to the Western palace. Dread filled him, originating from his stomach and spreading though his being. He couldn't help but shiver and hunch into himself. He felt cold, though he knew it was his nervousness taking effect.
Thoughts ran though his mind and disappeared almost instantly to be replaced with new ones as he gazed upon the magnificent castle that would be his new home. Would his father's family like him? Do they even tolerate hanyou? What would he do if they don't?
Inuyasha could see a group of inu-youkai by the front steps leading to the palace. One easily distinguishable as his father. There was a beautiful woman standing close to his father, Inuyasha could tell that she's his father's first mate. On the other side of his father was another, much younger youkai who looked remarkably like the first, with long white hair and stony expression. Inuyasha guessed the demon was the first heir. Further behind the respected family were seven more inu-youkai, two of which looked almost his age, maybe a little older. It was obvious this must be the royal family.
"Ready Inuyasha?" Izayoi smiled at the sight of her mate and his family waiting for them.
"Yes," Inuyasha drawled out, disinterested. He wasn't ready, not at all, but he had to put up a brave facade.
They both exited the carriage, Izayoi toeing the dirt road before Inuyasha stumbled after her. They approached the waiting group. Inuyasha walked slightly behind his mother and attempted to hold a cool face. The power and strength from the other youkai was almost too intimidating for him, and he couldn't help slowing his pace.
"Welcome, Izayoi." Inutaisho's booming voice echoed through the open courtyard. It was warm and inviting; Inuyasha relaxed his ears somewhat, feeling slightly better.
"Hello, Taisho." Izayoi returned as she was embraced by the demon lord.
Inuyasha stood back, shifting his feet, looking at all the inu-youkai that made up his father's family. He avoided eye contact determinedly as he scrutinized each individual youkai.
The first one resembled his father greatly; she had the same single, jagged marks across her pale cheeks. Her eyes were, of course, a golden color that reflected several emotions. What they were, Inuyasha couldn't tell. She was a few inches shorter than his father, with the identical long, silver hair that floated above her waist from the tight ponytail. She had on a sky-blue kimono decorated with puffy clouds, contrasting well with her fair skin. The dress, instead of stretching down to her ankles, unusually stopped at her knees. It wasn't a bad look on her, Inuyasha noted, just different from the normal style of dress-wear he'd seen. All in all, she was beautiful.
The next one also looked similar to his father, though certainly not so white. His build was smaller, on a miniscule level. Shoulders and waist a little slimmer, face somewhat narrower. He, like the last youkai, had the same markings; only instead of one, he had two stripes on each cheek. His eyes, along with curiosity, seemed to hold some wariness. His attire of choice was a green kimono with trees on it. His hair was also tied at the top of his head, but was the length was shorter and only reached to his mid-back. The cocky grin plastered on his face, in some strange way, made his face softer.
The woman next to the previous man looked almost nothing like his father, the only similarity was the eyes, which had a slight tilt to them, making her look exotic. Instead of having her hair in a complete topknot, the upper half of her hair was tied, leaving the rest cascading down. Her kimono was a plain orange lacking any kind of design, and like the other woman's, stopped at her knees.
Next was a man wearing a black kimono with a beautiful, silver dragon on the shoulder, swirling decoratively down to his hip. His hair, free of any bounds, flowed freely down his back. His physique is big and bulky, making him look very strong. "He probably is," Inuyasha thought. His face was stern, lips in a straight line, and arms crossed over his chest. The look made Inuyasha nervous, he almost looked angry.
The last of the adults was a woman wearing a violet kimono that stretched down to her ankles. Her hair was in a loose braid crossing over her shoulder to hang down her front. Her heart-shaped face was soft with a small, kind smile. From the looks of it she was friendly. One thing strange, was that the markings on her cheeks were light, almost like they were faded. Inuyasha wondered if that was natural; he didn't know demon marks came that pale.
The last two inu-youkai were about his age. One boy and a girl. They both had on similar dark blue kimonos, only the boy had a dog embroidered on it while the girl's was a solid color. They were looking at him with unreadable expressions that made him uneasy. The only comfort he got was that their eyes were widened instead of narrowed.
"What are you doing back there, Inuyasha? Come and give your father a hug." Inutaisho's voice brought him out of his thoughts.
"Hi." Inuyasha's greeting was quick and sharp.
"Welcome, Inuyasha." Inutaisho could feel his son's stiff frame as he hugged him.
"Let's start the introductions." Inutaisho began, turning him around to face everyone.
"This is-" he started.
"I'm Inukama, Kama for short," said the woman wearing the sky-blue kimono.
Inutaisho gave her a look at being interrupted but said nothing.
"I'm Inusatsu or Satsu, and this is my mate Sadaka." Said the male in the green kimono, gesturing to the woman in the orange kimono. Huh, no wonder she looked nothing like his father.
"And these are our pups, Sana," He gestured lazily to the girl and then to the boy youth, "and Sadami." He ignored the glares he got from Sana and Sadami at being called pups.
"Satomaru," came the rough voice by the male in the black kimono.
"Hello Inuyasha, I'm Yuka." The female in the violet kimono smiled warmly.
"And this is Sakura, my first mate." Inutaisho said gesturing to the woman standing next to him.
"And that is Sesshomaru, your brother." He continued gesturing to Sesshomaru, who had to hold in a growl at being called the abominations brother. Half-brother, if anything.
"Nice to meet you all." To his dismay, Inuyasha's anxious feelings were belied from his shaky tone of voice and unfortunately didn't go unnoticed by the crowd of family members. Izayoi went to stand next to Inuyasha, making him feel better, but only a little.
"Damn Sato, will you stop trying to act all high and mighty already! Your frightening Inuyasha." Inukama glared at her brother, noticing Inuyasha's nervous glances at Satomaru with a keen eye.
"I am doing no such thing!" Satomaru brushed off his oldest sister's words.
"Sure you're not." Kama's agreed sarcastically, a sigh in her voice. "Try being friendlier some time. Maybe then you won't scare everybody new that comes."
"Hmph." Was the only reply, Sato having nothing to say at the comment; for it was true, he usually was the one that startled newcomers.
"Do they argue like this all the time?" Inuyasha asked his father, unknowingly drawing everyone's attention away from the arguing pair and stopping the said argument.
"Yes." Inutaisho's exasperated tone at his younger sibling's behavior was clear through his slow reply.
"Wow, that must be annoying huh?" Inuyasha inquired casually, not knowing about the stares he was receiving from talking so boldly about his father's siblings, and right in front of them no less!
"You have no idea. Oh the joy of having younger siblings." Inutaisho said sardonically. Apparently that's where Inuyasha got it from.
"Hey! You don't have to talk about us as if we're not here you know!" Snapped an annoyed Kama.
"And besides we don't argue that much," agreed Sato.
"Ha! You two argue everyday over the most unimportant things." Sadaka butted in, speaking for the first time.
"I must agree with Sadaka." Yuka added flatly.
"It's true." Satsu offered.
"I beg to differ!" Came the simultaneous replies from Kama and Sato.
"Enough!" Inutaisho hissed, bringing their attention to him as he threw up his hands. "You two always argue, then the rest of you argue with them about their arguing!"
After that is was silent for a few moments before the silence was broken by Inuyasha. "Mother, should we just go inside and eat lunch, or do we have to wait for them? I'm hungry."
"Trust me, I'd like to leave too, but we can't because it's not polite." Izayoi noticed that all their things were already taken from the carriage to their rooms.
"Well I never-" Inutaisho started.
"And you never will either!" Interrupted Izayoi. "So I suggest we go inside and have a wonderful lunch because that's what Inuyasha and I are going to do." Izayoi snapped roughly, taking her son by the hand and walking past the stunned inu-youkai into the palace.
Everyone stood unmoving, still dumbfounded by Izayoi's attitude, watching their retreating backs. Even Sakura and Sesshomaru, who stayed quiet throughout the whole exchange, watched in amusement.
Maybe Izayoi is the one Inuyasha gets his audaciousness from.
Soon after Inuyasha and Izayoi entered the palace, the youkai got over their shock and followed them.
"Here we are." Izayoi announced as they entered the dining room.
"Wow." Inuyasha whispered. This dining room was huge, at least five times bigger than the one at his mother's palace. Not only was the size immense, but the elaborate décor could make even the most wealthy king halt and gaze in awe. He would have stood there gawking the rest of the day if his mother hadn't ushered him into a seat.
Not long after they sat down did everybody else come into the room and grab a seat as well. Inutaisho took his position at the head of the table with Sakura at his right and Izayoi to his left. Next to their respective birth mothers were Inuyasha and Sesshomaru. Next to Sesshomaru was Kama, Satsu, and Sadaka. Next to Inuyasha was Yuka and Sato. Next to Sadaka was Sana; next to Sato was Sadami.
As they were waiting for the food to arrive Taisho decided to start up a conversation with Izayoi.
"How was the journey? There were no mishaps I hope."
"The trip here was fine. Uneventful, even, I must say."
The start of their conversation also seemed to have produced others, and soon almost everybody was talking, even Sakura and Sesshomaru. The only one not talking was Inuyasha, who was humming to himself quietly, his head swaying bizarrely. This sound didn't go unnoticed by the others. Though conversing, each youkai (except for Sakura and Sesshomaru) took a glance at the source of the beautiful tune at various points in time.
Yuka decided to ask him some questions of her own. "Inuyasha, how are you feeling? You're very quiet."
"I'm fine." Inuyasha's response was curt and border-lined on rude.
"Are you sure?" Yuka probed, not convinced.
"Yes." Inuyasha didn't want to talk to anyone, not feeling comfortable with his new 'family'.
"Alight then. What do you like to do in your spare time?" Yuka changed the subject, hoping to get more out of him, not noticing that everyone else stopped to listen to their conversation.
"Nothing really-" He started the fabrication when his mother jumped in.
"He writes during his spare time." Izayoi cut in, knowing her son would lie and say 'nothing'.
"Really? What does he write?" Yuka's interest was spiked.
"Poems. And he writes songs. And he's a great singer! He has the most spectacular voice." Izayoi confirmed with pride.
Everybody gasped except Sakura and Sesshomaru, even though they wanted to.
"A vocalist! You must get it from your mother because nobody in this family can sing!" Inutaisho was astonished at hearing his son had vocal talent.
"Has he ever sung for you, Izayoi?" asked an engrossed Sato.
"Yes, he sings for my birthday every year."
"Oh great. Here she goes." Inuyasha's eyes rolled skyward.
"Would you sing for us Inuyasha?" Sadami and Sana gushed at the same time.
"Um... well... I don't think..." Inuyasha stuttered at all the expectant faces of everyone, even his mother.
"Of course he will." Izayoi answered for him, knowing what his answer would be and disregarding it.
Soon after their lunch arrived, they ate as quickly as possible, wanting to hear what Inuyasha would sing for his new audience.
Hint to Next Chapter: Inuyasha uses magic so he won't have to sing.
