Chapter 02

The next day Maura came in a bit early. She was frustrated with herself and she moved about the room rushed. Her hair was pulled back into its signature ponytail and she wore grey cargos and a light pink tshirt with a ligh printed scarf. She wore flats. When Jane would come in, she would notice something right off the start...there were no glasses.

"Hey, good afternoon, Maura." Jane said smiling as she entered and dropped her purse again. The other model didn't seem to be here yet.

"Oh no glasses...I like it." The Italian girl said smiling and eyed the blonde from head to toe. "And I like your outfit."

Maura looked up and sighed, shaking her head.

"Oh my glasses broke this morning. I had to wear contacts...Ug, I just feel naked," she groaned and stood upright from her stooped position.

"You look way better my friend," Maura said back. "I threw this on at the last minute," she said and started to say something else, but was stopped by the other model entering into the room.

"Maura, I need water, my dresses and shoes, and makeup started asap!" Rebecca said, eyeing Jane and smiling.

"Darling...Janie..."

Jane was just about to answer to Maura as the other model entered. The second she entered, Jane recognized her again. She had worked with her before and she remembered now that it hadn't been very pleasant.

"Hey Rebecca...long time no see. How have you been?" Jane asked and forced herself to smile at her sweetly, her cute dimples showing again.

"Oh you are soo adorable Janie," Rebecca said as Maura moved about getting what the woman had asked.

She wheeled in all the outfits for the shoot and had already set up the makeup, but she needed to get the drinks and food. She hurried behind them working.

"I am well Janie...how are you dear," she said to Jane and set her stuff down. "Not fast enough Maura. My tonic is not here..." She smiled at Jane and then rolled her eyes at Jane toward Maura.

Jane glanced over to Maura and then to Rebecca. "She is doing as fast as she can already. C'mon Rebecca, why the rush?" Jane asked her with a smile and sat down on a chair and crossed her legs.

"And I am well too, thank you. I actually started College now in case...well you never know." Jane said to her.

"It's not fast enough," she muttered under her breath to Jane and then made a face at Jane's mention of college.

"Oh you are wasting your money Jane and do you really think that college is for you? I mean, your looks can get you what you want...why do you want to work for it," she said and glanced over at Maura.

"I said now Maura, god..." she grumbled. Maura moved over with a skipped step to hand Rebecca her water and offered Jane one as well. Rebecca took hers roughly.

Jane frowned at Rebecca and how she treated the blonde assistant.

"Thank you, Maura." Jane said as she handed her the water. Jane placed it in front of her and looked at Rebecca.

"Well, my looks will fade when I am older and I am not sure I wanna do modeling all my life..." Jane said and shrugged her shoulders. "Though now, I don't have any intentions to quitt it yet."

Rebecca ignored Jane's politeness and sighed to herself.

"You don't need education, Jane. You have this...it is what you are...it is what you do," she said.

"Actually, education will benefit her in the long ru-" Maura started but was cut off.

"Were we talking to you Maura? No. Now get things ready...We want to start the final fittings shortly," Rebecca said."

Jane frowned again and took a sip from her tonic water.

"Maura is my friend..." Jane started. "...can you treat her with a bit more respect, please? She is doing as much as she can already." The Italian girl said and sighed.

"And about our conversation: I wanna finish College though. I wanna feel like I've reached something in life, you know." Jane explained to her and shrugged her shoulders. "But that's just me."

"Friend, oh..." Rebecca chuckled silently and watched the blonde working for a moment before looking back to Jane.

"Ok, well suit yourself, Jane. It's not for everyone, I guess." She said and sat back in her chair and Maura fished through four outfits for each woman and carried them over by hangers to the dividers.

She hung them up. Rebecca stood as Maura came around the dividers. She stepped in Maura's way.

"Janie says you two are friends...is this true or is she just being nice?" Maura froze and looked from Rebecca to Jane.

Jane sighed aloud and walked over.

"Rebecca, stop it. Or she can't do her work, and that's what you want, no? You want her to be quick at what she is doing. She hardly can be when you are in her way." Jane said and moved over to them, pulling Maura gently back by her arm.

"Please?"

"Oh alright," Rebecca said and stepped slightly to the side and toward the divider, leaving Jane with Maura for a moment.

Maura rolled her eyes and shook her head in slightly showing annoyance. Maura gave a small smile to Jane and then nodded that she was good to go.

"You can put on the white suit," she told Jane and Rebecca.

"Okay thanks." Jane took the white suit and walked behind the divider and changed into that, as did Rebecca.

Rebecca was the first one to step forward.

"Maura it doesn't fit right. Do something!" She said impatient and looked at her reflection in the mirror.

"NOW."

Maura was over at the racks once Jane had moved behind the divider and she startled slightly as Rebecca came out yelled at her that it didn't fit right. Maura blinked and frowned, rushing over to the yelling woman.

"It fit last week..." she said softly and pulled at the blazer and then lifted it to look at the pants. It was slightly tight.

"Oh...right...hum...Let me go get a different size," she said.

"Yeah you better hurry up with that. You must have switched sizes or something. I bet if you had your glasses on, you'd see that you messed up with the sizes." Rebecca said.

Jane stepped froward from the divider and looked over to Rebecca and Maura, sighing a bit.

"Miss Rebecca with all due respect, I have contacts in and I can see quite well," Maura said back letting her disgust and annoyance show more than she wanted it too. She moved to the rack and pulled another blazer and pants and walked back to the woman.

"Perhaps you should watch your alcohol consumption, perhaps you can fit the clothing...better."

Jane's mouth fell open in pure shock at what Maura had dared to say to Rebecca.

Rebecca's face changed immediatly and she looked pissed and the very next moment a sound was heard, the sound of Rebecca's hand meeting Maura's cheek.

"How dare you, you little...bitch!" She ripped the new blazer and pants out of Maura's hand and walked behind the divider.

Maura let out a soft cry as she was hit square across her cheek. Her hand went up to her face almost immediately and she narrowed her eyes at Rebecca. Once the clothing was ripped from her hands she turned and went over to the clothing rack away from Jane. She rubbed her cheek as she moved through the racks for a different size of the other three outfits if she had them.

Jane stood there and felt awkward that she had witnessed that. Maura shouldn't have said that but also Rebecca shouldn't have reacted the way she did. The Italian girl swallowed and moved over to Maura.

"Are you okay?" She asked the blonde quietly, seeing the perfect red handprint across her cheek.

Maura waved it off.

"It was entirely my doing, Jane," she said and sighed, blinking a few times and covering her cheek again with her hand.

"I need to learn not to state the obvious. I really do," she lightly chuckled and then fell silent. She stepped back, looking Jane up and down.

"Head over the mirror, I will bring the shoes and accessories," she said, getting back to work.

Jane watched Maura in silence. She moved over to her purse and got out a water bottle. She moved over to the blonde and gently pressed it against Maura's reddened cheek.

"It cools it a bit. Feels better right?" Jane asked her softly, before she moved over to the mirror as requested.

Maura jumped very slightly as Jane put the water bottle against her cheek. However, she did not move away from the touch. Jane's touch was so gentle...so sweet...so welcomed.

Maura nodded, "Yes, it does, thank you," she said and then urged Jane to the mirror. She breathed out slowly and walked over after a moment with the shoes.

Rebecca stepped next to Jane now and looked at herself in the mirror.

"Hold you tongue the next time." She warned the blonde woman and glanced at her dangerously. She was no one to mess with.

"The slap was really uncalled for, Rebecca." Jane pointed out.

Maura didn't say anything and just went to work adjusting the suits around their bodies. She moved from Jane to Rebecca, letting them talk. Maura heard Jane slightly stand up for her and she smiled while she gently tugged on Rebecca's jacket.

"I was insulted by a peon...it had to be dealth with."

Jane sighed at Rebecca's answer.

"If you are nicer to people, they will treat you nicer as well." The Italian girl pointed out and glanced at Rebecca again.

"Don't get me wrong. I don't wanna pick a fight with you...I am just suggesting." Jane said to her.

Rebecca pulled away from Maura.

"It's fine, Maura," she said pointedly and Maura held her hands up and stepped back.

"Right Janie...I know you won't. You are one of the good ones. You however, are just annoying..." she said and then shoved Maura back as she stepped back behind the divider to change into the next outfit. Maura rubbed her upper arm and sighed.

Jane gave Maura an apologizing look and stepped behind her own divider as well. She changed into the next outift.

"Maura is doing a good job...She's doing that, the hair and the make up...Usually they have more people for all that. But she does it all by herself. That's impressive. You should give her credit for that." Jane said and stepped in front of the divider again.

"You are such a pretty woman, Rebecca, but you are so angry and impatient sometimes."

Rebecca just rolled her eyes in a 'whatever' fashion at Jane's words as she stepped around the divider and stood before the mirror. The dresses looked good. Jane's was a little shorter than Rebecca's. Maura was at their sides quickly, doing Rebecca first.

"Thank you, I think," Rebecca replied and after a few moments annoyingly shoved Maura away.

"See saying thank you isn't that bad." Jane pointed out and shrugged her shoulders, watching Maura's reflection in the mirror.

"How was your evening yesterday after you worked so hard all day?" The brunette asked Maura, starting a small talk with her.

At first Maura wasn't sure Jane was talking to her and when Rebecca didn't answer she looked up from her fixing of Jane's hemline. Her lips parted and she started to speak, but stopped herself, meeting the lovely brown eyes that looked at her.

"I just sat a home," Maura said,

"Boring," Rebecca said and folded her arms across her chest.

"Why don't you ask her when she used the restroom Jane...that would be waaay more interesting...or how much she eats."

Jane looked over to Rebecca and gave her a look.

"Rebecca." Jane said in a warning tone of voice.

"I did the same basically. I fell asleep as soon as I came home...and this morning I had to write my exam. I wonder how it went. I will find out about it by next week." Jane kept on talking to Maura, while the blonde was fixing up her dress, feeling her warm hands against the fabric of the dress, that would burn into her skin.

"What? I am just saying she is a little chunky," Rebecca said and laughed softly. Maura just let herself concentrate on Jane's dress before standing back and smiling with nod.

"I know you did just fine. You are smarter than you give yourself credit for," she said and nudged the woman's upper arm before stepping back farther.

"Looks good..both of you."

"She is not chunky at all...she looks very healthy and as a matter of fact I am jealous of her breasts and her hips." Jane said, starting to get frustrated with Rebecca. Why was she always so mean to the staff? She remembered all the arguments and problems they had at the last shoot they had together. Rebecca was a bitch to everyone.

"And thanks Maur, I really do hope so. Cross your fingers for me."

"Welcome," Maura said and then became very self conscious about her body as Jane described what she was jealous of. She averted her eyes for a moment. Rebecca shook her head and shrugged.

"She is so..." Rebecca said and moved to stand next to Maura. "Short and fat, tall and thin...visually different."

"God!" Maura groaned and threw her hands up and walking away from the pair. Rebecca just looked innocently at Jane.

Jane gave Rebecca a look again and pushed her lightly this time, before she followed the blonde assisant.

"Maura wait..." Jane said and gently reached for her hand and grabbed her wrist to stop her.

"I am sorry about Rebecca. Don't listen to her. I meant what I said...I really do. You are beautiful."

Rebecca just made a taunting face back at Jane after she was pushed and then she watched her chase after the blonde.

"Pathetic," she muttered to herself.

Maura was brought to a halt with Jane grabbing her wrist and she turned to look at her.

"You know what, thank you, but just don't. I will just do my job and get through the day like any other day...ok? You don't have to defend me or tell me lies...It's ok...I know you are trying to be nice, I get that."

Jane looked at her kind of hurt and let go of her wrist.

"I am not telling lies. Why should I?" Jane sighed.

"Sorry. I'll stop it." The brunette said and walked back behind the divider. She stripped in silence and dressed the next outfit.

Maura sighed as Jane walked away. She didn't mean to hurt her and it would take her the rest of the day to find Jane alone to tell her. Maura moved behind the divider as Jane was finishing dressing after the shoot. She stood there for a moment and watched her before speaking.

"Jane...I know you mean it...I am just frustrated. It's really not you, ok?"

"It's okay...I understand." The Italian girl said and dressed her jacket.

"What are you frustrated about? People like Rebecca?" Jane asked while she put her curls up into a bun. She looked at the blonde assistant.

"Sometimes, yes," she said while looking at Jane and smiling softly.

"You know, you really should leave your hair down more often. You are just...just...very nice looking."

Rebecca paused by her divider and listened to the two, while staying out of sight.

Jane smiled softly at her, her dimples showing again.

"Uh, thanks." Jane said and reached up and undid her hair again, letting her curls fall loosely over her shoulders.

"You are very nice looking too and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And I truly mean what I said, I'd rather have your figure than mine." Jane said softly.

"No no no, you don't. Believe me," Maura replied and smiled approvingly at Jane's hair being down.

She took a step forward and reached up to fluff a few of the lose locks neatly back into place around Jane's face. The color in her eyes deepened right before she stepped back.

"I am used to it, Jane. It is not a surprise to me..."

Jane held her breath as the blonde was reaching forward and brought her locks neatly back into place. She smiled at the blonde.

"You shouldn't be used to it...no one should treat you like that. You are not a punching bag... You are still young, why don't you do something else? Go back to College and study something?" Jane asked her.

Maura didn't know how she affected Jane and she brushed her fingers through the other side of Jane's locks and then dropped her hand.

"I like what I do, I just don't like the people all the time," she said and smiled. Maura had seen Jane in ways that most people hadn't...and she had grown to really enjoy her company.

"Hey, if you aren't too tired...and can hum...do you eat?"

Jane raised her brow at Maura's weird question.

"I'm not bulimic or anorexic...if you think that." Jane said and frowned a bit.

"I do eat...alot actually. But I have good genes, I guess. But yeah, I do eat...and it stays inside, so much I can tell you." Jane answered Maura's question.

"Well that's a relief," Maura chuckled lightly with a half smile. Maura was adorable when she was embarrassed.

"Dinner?" She finally asked and cleared her throat, chewing on her lower lip.

"That is, if you aren't busy for just a talking dinner..."

"No I am not...dinner sounds good. I am starving anyways." Jane said and placed a hand over her stomach.

"What restaurant are you thinking of?" Jane asked the blonde assistant and smiled. She watched Maura closely and assumed that she didn't had many friends since her job was so time-consuming and that those models probably didn't care about becoming friends with Maura.

"Well I don't want to carb you out...but there is a most delicious Mexican restaurant just a few blocks down. They have amazing cheese salsa and salty chips. Really yummy," she said with a bright smile.

She was glad that Jane had agreed. It just meant it was another hour that she didn't have to spend all alone.

"I can drive us, if you want," she said, pointing toward the door.

"God, that sounds so delicious. And I love Mexican food, so let's do it." Jane said with a smile and checked her phone real quick for messages before she dropped it back in her purse.

"How long do you still gotta work or are you off now too?" The brunette asked her.

"I don't clean up tonight...I get one free night so I guess tonight is my free night," she said with a cute smile as they walked around the divider.

Rebecca came around after them and grabbed Jane's arm.

"I am sorry Maura," she said drawing out her name in a condascending manner.

"I already invited Jane out to a dinner party for the models. She can't go to dinner with you. Besides...who would want to...you are soo boring..."

Jane gasped in sheer surprise as she saw Rebecca all of a sudden, who grabbed her arm and stopped her. The Italian girl shook her head at Rebecca's words.

"I know you did, and thank you for the invitation but I rather have some dinner now with Maura. I'll be joining you and the girls another time and besides...you are not my mother, Rebecca, and decide who I can go out to dinner with and who not."

"Why in the hell would you want to spend your time with that plain Jane, no offense honey, but she is boring...boooring," she repeated and Maura's jaw tightened, but she kept her mouth shut and simply pulled Jane's arm free and practically dragged her from the main room.

Rebecca watched after them and narrowed her eyes.
