Thank you to all of you who have read this so far and to those who are following this story. I hope that you will enjoy it. Don't worry we will get to meet Magnus soon, but I wanted to share some Alec's thoughts about his new pen pal.

Disclaimer: As much as I wish I could I do not own Shadowhunters, especially Alec and Magnus.

Chapter Two

Mr. Starkweather watched as Alec headed back to his seat and then stopped. He knew that Alec had started to read the profile and realized that he didn't have a lot in common with his pen pal. He hoped that Alec would come talk to him after class so he could explain why he had chosen this particular person and why he felt like this would be the best match for him.

He finished calling the rest of the students up as Alec headed towards his seat. Once all the students had received their assigned person he addressed the class once more.

"I'm sure some of you are wondering about the person you were assigned to and feel like you have nothing in common with them. I want you to approach this with an open mind and also know that the person that you may have the least in common with may be the person who will end up changing your life. You may never meet this person face to face, but they can still change your life for the better. Just remember that if you really do have questions about your assigned individual you can come and talk to me after class and I will explain my reasoning a bit more," Mr. Starkweather explained to the class.

The remainder of the class was spent going over the reading assignment for the week. Alec tried to pay attention but his thoughts kept going back to his pen pal. How was he going to do this when he didn't have much in common with them? He was the least fashionable person there was. He felt comfortable in worn shirts and jeans. He very rarely bought anything new, much to the consternation of his sister. He wore what made him feel comfortable and also what helped him blend in with his surroundings. The more invisible he was the less he had to interact with people. It was hard enough for him when he had to do group projects and presentations for classes.

The ringing of the bell brought Alec out of his thoughts and he realized that he missed the rest of the class. He quickly wrote down the instructions for the reading assignment so he could make sure to do it over the weekend. After he took his notes and he gathered up his stuff, he approached his teacher.

"Mr. Starkweather can I talk to you for a moment?" Alec asked walking to the teachers' desk.

"Of course Alec, I figured you would have questions about the pen pal assignment," Mr. Starkweather said motioning Alec to come closer.

"I was reading the profile and I noticed that I don't have a lot in common with who you want me to write to. I remember you mentioning at the beginning of the week that you were going to try to match us with someone who shared our interests. How is this going to work for me if I can't really relate to them?" inquired Alec.

"To be honest Alec yours was the hardest for me. Every time I tried to pair you with someone else that you had things in common with I kept going to back to this person. I really feel strongly that you will be able to relate to him even though you don't have much in common with them. I was going to wait until after everyone had received their first letter from their pen pal to give this out but I feel like this might help you get started," Mr. Starkweather explained handing Alec a picture.

"What is this?" Alec asked feeling slightly confused.

"This is a picture of who you will be writing to. This may help you find somewhere to start with the first letter. This was going to be part of the second assignment because I wanted the first letter to be about what you learned from the information you were given without forming an opinion based on what the person looked like. As you know appearances can be deceiving and starting without an idea of what the person looks like will help to form an opinion that isn't based on their appearance. The idea is to help you dig deeper and find out what it underneath the exterior before seeing what they look like," Mr. Starkweather explained still holding the picture.

"I don't know if I want to see the picture then. You mentioned that the picture will be part of the second assignment so I will do my best to find something that I can write to them about and take the picture when everyone else does. I don't want an unfair advantage or for the other students to think that you are favoring me," Alec replied pushing the picture towards his teacher.

"That is your choice. I know that you can do this and I really do think that you will find out you have a lot in common with your pen pal and you may be pleasantly surprised at the assignment progresses."

"Thank you and I look forward to getting to know more about them."

Alec left the room and took a deep breath. Yes he could have taken the easy way out and taken the picture but he knew a big part of this assignment was about pushing himself and that is what he wanted to do. He wanted to push himself and allow himself to open up to someone that wasn't one of his siblings.

English was his last class of the day so he headed to his locker to grab the books that he would need for his weekend assignments. Once he had grabbed those he went to find his brother and sister. He knew that they would still be a few minutes so that gave him time to look over the profile of his pen pal again.
