Chapter 2: Settling In
Kairi was nervous as she was led into the Hall of Justice by the Heroine known as Black Canary who took notice of her nervousness. "Relax we're just going to ask you some questions and that's it." Canary promised.
Looking over at her Kairi faked a smile. "O-okay." She said nervously.
Leading Kairi into a small room with one camera Black Canary took a seat and indicated for Kairi to do the same. "We just want to ask who exactly is after you."
Nodding Kairi began. "Don't know but always chased." Kairi explained as best as she could. "Chased for two years so get help."
"Why didn't you go to the Police?" Canary asked curiously.
"Did already but they scared." Kairi said looking down. "Eyes scare them."
Canary admits that the eyes unnerved her and maybe half the League but she felt a bit of anger that the Police didn't help her just because of her eyes. "Start at the beginning."
"Living alone, I keep moving only to be found in every city wherever I go." Kairi told Canary. "Everywhere someone tries to kill me."
"You're safe here Kairi but can you at least give us a description of the people trying to kill you?" Canary asked eliciting a nod from Kairi.
"Two groups, one always wear red cloaks… Two are always changing. One tries to kill, two tries to capture."
'Red cloaks… At least we have something to go on.' Canary thought before nodding. "Would you mind waiting here for a bit?"
"Okay." Kairi replied as Canary exited the room and Kairi just sat there tapping her knees to pass the time.
~In the other room~
"You don't honestly believe that she's hiding something do you?" Black Canary asked Batman in disbelief as he watched the TV screen showing the footage in the room that Kairi was waiting in. Kairi began to mess with her scarf after tapping her knees. "She's just a scared thirteen year old girl that needs help."
"Something about her story doesn't make sense." Batman told Canary as he rewinds the tape. "She could be what she says that she is or she could be something else."
Canary shook her head. "You are the most paranoid man in the world along with Question."
Batman didn't say anything to answer that before he looked at Canary. "So you're going to trust her just like that?"
"Just like that." Canary said firmly. "She hasn't done anything to harm anyone and she helped the protégés so I trust her."
Before Batman could say anything the compute he was using beeped and he brought up some old security footage that he hacked into from earlier that day to show Kairi being flash banged. "Interesting."
"So that's who were chasing her." Canary muttered as she looked at the video.
"As well as what they used." Seeing Canary's confused look Batman elaborated. "Her eyes seem sensitive to sudden flashes of light, this group knows that which means that either they tried this many times to learn that or they have experience fighting someone with her powers, it shows with them trying to keep her away from the shadows."
"So you think that she's not the only one who has her powers?"
"I don't know." Batman said causing Canary to stare in shock as the Batman, the man who has an answer for practically anything, admitted to not knowing something. "I'll have to look into this further."
"Well then, where is she going to stay?" Canary asked. "We can't just throw her out into the streets."
"…" Batman looked at Canary. "We're not, but the problem is finding where to let her stay. She can't go to Gotham because I'm not sure how my city will affect her."
Canary agreed with Batman on that one knowing how Gotham was to people before she smiled. "Kairi can stay with me."
"You sure about that?" Batman asked cautiously.
"Yes and if there's any trouble Ollie can help me." Canary looked at Batman. "Call if you find a lead on these people."
"I will." Canary had a feeling that he wouldn't but she decided to focus on Kairi for right now.
~With Kairi~
Okay now Kairi was extremely nervous as she waited by herself for a few minutes eyeing the camera knowing that she was being watched but she tugged on her scarf a bit more before the door opened. "Follow me." Canary told her and Kairi jumped up to follow her.
"Where we go?" Kairi asked curiously.
"We're going to have you stay with me for a few days." Canary told Kairi. "Batman will look into these two groups who are after you but you need a place to stay so you're coming to Star City with me."
Kairi nodded before they came to a weird machine and she stared in wonder at it. "What that?"
"A Zeta Beam-." Canary remembered one important fact. "Just a warning it'll let out a flash of light as it turns on."
Kairi's eyes widened before she shut them as a robotic voice spoke up. "Recognize Black Canary 13."
For some reason Kairi felt extremely weird before Canary spoke up again. "Okay you can open your eyes now."
Opening them slowly Kairi found herself shocked that they were in a small apartment. "Where-?"
"This is my place." Canary explained with a smile. "My real name is Dinah Lance."
Kairi found herself surprised that Black Canary gave her real name to her but she nodded as she looked around the apartment. "Cool." She got out.
Canary chuckled. "Yes it is, so you hungry, tired or in need of a shower?"
Five minutes later Kairi found herself in the shower feeling the warm water press against her skin for the first time in… Well forever. It felt good.
While she was in the shower Kairi knew that Canary was cleaning her clothes because she made absolute sure that Canary wouldn't get rid of them… Especially her scarf because whenever she had it she always felt happy… It sparked something in her memory that much she did know.
Once Kairi was certain that she was clean she turned the water off and wrapped the towel around her before stepping out. Wiping the condensation from the mirror Kairi looked at her reflection wincing at seeing her eyes again.
To her these eyes were nothing more than a curse because they scared away people before they got to know her, but she was also happy that she seemingly became friends with four people that were close to her age but she looked down wondering if they really were her friends or they just felt sorry for her.
'Stop it.' Kairi mentally scolded herself… Yeah she really needs to work on her self-esteem.
Trying to smile she saw a few missing teeth causing her to close her mouth again before leaving to go to the guest room that Canary gave her and she saw a fresh pair of clothes.
Putting them on she went downstairs to see Canary watching some TV before she turned hearing one of the steps creaked. "Feel better Kairi?"
Kairi nodded not saying anything for a few seconds.
"Are you hungry?"
"Y-Yes." Kairi said hesitantly causing Canary to smile a bit.
"You can relax Kairi, you're a guest here."
"T-Thank Canary." Kairi said with a small smile.
~The Next Day~
Kairi yawned as she got up around ten in the morning only to flinch as she saw she didn't recognize where she was, but she relaxed upon remembering the incident that happened at Cadmus the other day.
"C-Canary?" Kairi called out before remembering. "D-Dinah?"
Leaving the room Kairi didn't see anyone in the house but she found a note on a table.
Dear Kairi,
Sorry for leaving so abruptly but something came up, there's a sandwich in the fridge for you if you get hungry. I'll try to be back soon.
Dinah.
Putting the note down Kairi sat down wondering what to do at that moment before she looked outside to see that it was a beautiful day.
'Maybe going outside wouldn't hurt.' Kairi thought as she put some clothes that Canary left for her in her room as well as her scarf and she was about to leave to go outside only to stop as she thought about her eyes. 'If they find me here they could hurt Dinah.'
Looking around Kairi smiled in relief when she saw a pair of sunglasses nearby so she put them on and walked outside.
Kairi had no idea what city she was in at the moment, but it was amazing as she walked around without people screaming at her because of her eyes, making her wish that she thought about wearing sunglasses in the first place.
~The Watchtower~
"Batman, have you found anything yet?" Canary asked on seeing the dark knight himself looking at some of the videos he got from the other day.
"A few things." Batman answered as he brought an image up showing more different people wearing red cloaks as well as murdered civilians. "There have been suspicious murders all over the world every few years committed by individuals wearing these cloaks, the reason no one noticed solved them is because they disappear without a trace when they do kill people."
"Is there a connection to people that they kill?" Canary asked looking sick because most of the pictures showed children at least seven or nine.
"None." Batman answered coldly and Canary could see that he was enraged at what he was finding out. "But they're too random for it to be coincidence so there must be something missing."
Canary nodded agreeing with him.
"You left her alone in Star City?" Batman asked as he turned the videos off to go back to Gotham.
"She's in my apartment." Canary answered with a smile. "Kairi is a likable kid, she's incredibly shy, but she's friendly."
"Bring her to Mount Justice in two days." Batman said making Canary give Batman a look.
"Mount Justice? In Happy Harbor? But I thought that we abandoned that base after Joker found it years ago."
"It'll serve as a base for the team that our protégés created when they infiltrated Cadmus."
"I guess." Canary muttered before she realized something in Batman's sentence. "Wait, are you having her join this team?!" She asked in a dangerous voice. "She's a kid with no combat training at all!"
Batman didn't flinch as Canary spoke before he gave her a look. "This 'kid' as you call her can control shadows themselves, and there's the fact that she spoke up with the others at Cadmus." He said coldly leaving no tone for argument. "The others will see her as a part of the team and I believe that she already made her decision."
Canary scowled a bit before relenting. "I suppose you're right." She sighed at what she was saying. "But I don't think she knew what she was volunteering for when she spoke up."
~With Kairi~
Kairi smiled as she watched birds fly over her through the sky, while kids were playing games in the Park, it's been a while since she stopped to relax from anything and right now she was enjoying it for all it was worth.
That was when something slammed into her head nearly knocking her sunglasses off.
"Sorry!" A voice called out and Kairi shook her head to see that a green Frisbee was what hit her so she looked over to see a little kid with brown hair while other kids were waiting patiently.
"It okay." Kairi gave him the Frisbee back. "Be careful."
"T-Thanks." The kid said with a small smile before running back to his friends while Kairi rubbed the spot where the Frisbee hit her before walking off and taking in the sights.
Deciding to head back to the house Kairi looked around before going into an alley right into the shadows and ended up back in Canary's guest room just in time to head.
"Recognize Black Canary 13."
Quickly putting the sunglasses back down Kairi smiled innocently as Canary walked in. "Have a good day?" Canary asked seeing Kairi.
"It peaceful." Kairi said with a small smile.
Canary nodded before she looked thoughtful. "Kairi, what do you think of being my partner?"
Kairi blinked in confusion. "P-Partner?" She asked wondering what Canary meant.
"In the field?" Canary elaborated for her. "Like how Robin, Kid Flash and Aqualad are?"
Kairi's eyes widened as she understood that Canary was asking if she wanted to become her protégé. "Really?" Kairi asked in shock.
"Only if you want to." Canary told her sternly. "You remember how you spoke up with the others yesterday?" As Kairi nodded Canary continued. "When you spoke up you gave the impression of being on a team with them and I want to know if you want training?"
Looking down Kairi asked. "W-What about groups?" She asked referring to the two groups that try to kill her on a daily basis.
"Batman is looking into that." Canary promised her before looking serious. "And if any of them tries to hurt you then they'll have to answer to the League."
Feeling tears leaking down her face Kairi smiled in appreciation. "Thank you." She said gratefully.
That night Canary had Kairi doing some warm-ups to stretch her muscles while explaining the dangers of being a hero.
"It's a thankless job for some people, but we go out there to fight so other people can remain safe." Canary said as Kairi stretched her arms up. "In this life there's the possibility of injury, tragedy and death but if we don't fight then no one will."
Kairi nodded to show that she understood before Canary stood in front of her.
"How did you fight Blockbuster with the others?"
"Used powers." Kairi answered forming a shadow shield in one hand and a sword in another. "But taken down easily."
"Exactly." Canary told her with a gentle smile. "You relied on your powers and not on your mind. I'm going to be teaching you how to fight and how to take down enemies who are stronger than you."
"Alright." Kairi listened as Canary showed her a basic move which was a leg sweep followed by a knee kick, but when Kairi tried it she fell to the floor.
"It takes practice." Canary reassured her. "I'm not expecting you to get it on your first try."
"Got it." Kairi said as she got up determined to get it right.
After a few more attempts Canary could see that Kairi was getting the hang of it. "Okay, keep on practicing it and I'll show you some more moves."
Giving Canary a nod, Kairi focused on practicing.
The next two days passed by as a blur before Kairi found herself with Canary in front of where the Zeta Beam was and Kairi was nervous in what was going on fingering her scarf while wearing a violet long sleeve shirt and blue jeans. "It's going to be okay Kairi." Canary promised her. "I'm just taking you to see the others."
Kairi nodded as Canary said that so she closed her eyes as they walked through. "Recognize Canary 13."
As the light died down Kairi opened her eyes to see Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad and Superboy each with their own mentor except for Superboy.
They were all in civilian clothing which shocked Kairi.
"Kairi!" Kid Flash zoomed up into Kairi's face nearly causing her to cry out in shock. "Man you look better than last time if that's even possible beautiful."
Feeling her face go red in embarrassment Kairi nodded before Robin pulled Kid Flash back. "Down boy." Robin joked with a smirk before looking at Kairi. "Have a good three days?"
"Eventful." Kairi answered before looking at Superboy and Aqualad. "How days go?"
Superboy just grunted with his arms crossed while Aqualad nodded. "Same as ever."
Batman chose that time to interrupt. "Since you five are determined to stay together and fight the good fight, you'll do it on League terms." He motioned to Red Tornado and Black Canary. "Red Tornado has volunteered to live here and act as your advisor. Black Canary is in charge of training." Kairi found herself smiling as Batman said that. "I will deploy you on missions."
Robin raised an eyebrow behind his sunglasses. "Real missions?" He asked carefully.
"Yes, but covert."
"The League will still handle the obvious stuff." Flash said as he put an arm around his protégé with a smirk. "There's a reason we have these big targets on our chest."
"But Cadmus proves that the bad guys are getting smarter." Aquaman continued with a nod. "Batman needs a team that can operate on the sly."
"You six will be that team." Batman said making them all grin.
"Cool-. Wait." Robin thought about that. "Six?"
The others looked confused as well, before Batman motioned behind them and they turned to see Martian Manhunter, but he had a teenage Martian girl with red hair behind him, wearing a blue cape and a white shirt that had a red X on the front. "This is Martian Manhunter's niece, Miss Martian."
"Hi." Miss Martian waved shyly.
"Liking this gig more every minute." Kid Flash whispered to Robin before walking up. "Welcome aboard! I'm Kid Flash, this is Robin, Aqualad, Superboy and Kairi. S'cool if you forget their names."
"I'm honored to be included." Miss Martian said with a smile.
Kairi approached as well. "Honor ours."
As everyone but Superboy moved forward Robin turned. "Hey Superboy, come meet Miss M."
Walking forward everyone was surprised when Miss Martian's shirt changed from white to black. "I like your shirt." Miss Martian said shyly making Superboy smile a bit before Robin elbowed him and Kid Flash threw his arm around his shoulder.
Aqualad looked at all of them. "Today is the day."
