Day 3
Decided to put day numbers at the start of each entry, with Day 1 being the day I woke up. I'd put the actual date if I could, but I don't know how to find it.
I've been looking through the ship again to see what else I could use. Found some markers, figured I could put them to some use. Also found a sealed pack of batteries, they should keep my flashlight going for awhile. As for weapons, I found a few Swiss army knives, a variety of kitchen knives and, surprise surprise, a GUN. It was in a drawer in the captain's quarters, plus some ammo. Of course I have no idea what model it is or any of the fancy details, but I can at least recognize it as a revolver. Ornate as fuck too, smooth redwood handle, black steel body, gold trims, there's some words on the barrel but they're so cursive I can barely recognize a letter. For a bonus I also found a gun-like weapon labeled X-26 that has electrified spikes, an assortment of snacks and cereal that weren't exposed to too much moisture, some books, and a Nokia phone that actually still has power. Not much I can DO with it though, it looks ancient and it's not getting a signal out here, not that I'd know what number to dial. Maybe I can tie it to a stick and whack things with it.
Spent the entire day moving the stuff back to the cave with a backpack and planning tomorrow's expedition into the unknown jungle. What I have in mind is I'll use the markers to draw arrows on trees that point back to the cave. That way I won't get lost, and if there's anyone else out there they might lead them here. Good work, brain! I'll bring the gun and the Swiss army knife with me too in case I run into any nasty and/or tasty beasties, spent some time figuring out how they work. Also spent the day testing my own strength, had to make sure I'm physically fit for adventuring afterall. As for the results…my superior agility and reflexes are subjective; my smashing a boulder half my size with one kick isn't. In hindsight kicking a boulder half my size wasn't a very good idea in the first place, but DAMN am I strong!
Ah, sun's about set, guess I'm done for the day. Or I would be if I hadn't made my little fire pit~ Now I've got a nice little bonfire going at night when I need light or need to cook anything in the future. Still, not like there's much to write anymore, guess I WILL stop here. Time to pour me some cereal in coconut milk then get some shuteye so I'll be perfectly refreshed for tomorrow~ Look out nature, HERE I COME!
Day 4
Technically I'm writing this Day 5 morning, but whatever.
As planned, I set off deeper into the island yesterday to see what I could find. It was pretty exciting at first, trekking through the dense foliage, marking directions on a tree every minute or so, cutting down vines and oversized leaves with my knife, eyes and ears wary for unexpected danger. This place is BEAUTIFUL, there's all kinds of colorful plants among the greenery, as well as natural wildlife like deer and mountain goats. Also found some weird structures with fancy carvings all over them, looks to be the ruins of…something. The trip wasn't all funtimes though as the sun slowly rose higher and higher until the smothering heat had me drenched in sweat even while wearing nothing but a white t-shirt, so glad I decided not to go hiking up the mountain today, and the sweat then caused me to start getting swarmed with fucking bugs…literally mosquitos EVERYWHERE, I must have slapped at least a hundred of the little assholes today until my body was covered in dead bugs…eww, just thinking about it makes me shiver…As if that wasn't bad enough, I ended up walking into a big spider web while trying to kill the fuckers and something landed on my head. I looked up to see the head and two legs of a GIANT FUCKING SPIDER, and I'm talking GIANT, like that thing was as wide as my HEAD with its legs stretched out. I couldn't remember much after that other than screaming and panicking until I bumped into a tree and it got knocked off. I guess I should thank my lucky stars again I didn't run too far in my panic and quickly found a marked tree.
I was seriously ready to just head back after that fiasco, but the sound of flowing water drew my attention and led me to my prize: a waterfall falling down into a small lake that flowed off down a river to somewhere. The view was gorgeous, but more importantly, the cool water was so very enticing after the shit I went through! I didn't even hesitate jumping in to wash all the sweat and dead mosquitos off of me, so refreshing~ Strangely enough, none of the bugs actually bit me. Of course I'm not complaining, but considering the sheer amount of them at least a few should have been able to bite before I smooshed them. Oh well, whatever.
It was just unfortunate that the bath was so relaxing that I dozed off, and by the time I woke up it was already nighttime. Yes, unfortunate, totally not my fault. Good thing I brought my flashlight so I could see where I was going and find the markers again. However, around halfway back, the silence of the night (excluding the chirping of crickets) was shattered by a loud howl, followed by another, and another until they became an entire chorus. This place had wolves? That question answered itself a few minutes later when a rustling came from the foliage and one of them pounced out jaws first. Too bad for it I was already prepared and knifed it in the side mid-air while batting it away into a tree. Couldn't see whether it lived or died, too busy running while its hidden friends gave chase. Even I knew I couldn't outrun natural hunters like them for long on land, but that area put me at a severe disadvantage, I needed somewhere more open where I could move freely and see what they were doing, and the small clearing slightly further back was perfect. As soon as I got there I stopped and slipped my flashlight into the side of my backpack so I could hold my gun in one hand and knife in the other, the moonlight was enough for me to see there, and within seconds the rest of the pack showed up stalking out of the bushes, growling.
I counted 7 of them and they already had me surrounded before showing themselves instead of just lunging out first chance they got, clever boys. Upon closer inspection they didn't quite look like wolves, but they were close enough so whatever, dogs, wolves, they're all canines anyway. These ones were far more cautious after what happened to their buddy, watching me while circling slowly around, keep me guessing what they had in mind. If I were them I'd have stayed hidden in the bushes even if it meant sacrificing proximity, but I guess they were going the intimidation route. Bad choice, because when one turned towards me and I saw the opposite one tense up like I expected, I already saw right through them! The first one pounced, and just when I swung my knife the same way I did previously, the second one followed suit. As soon as the knife went in I spun my entire body around and slammed the first wolf into its accomplice, then let go of the knife and sent both flying into a third! Before they could recover, I ran at a fourth and kicked it right in the belly, blood practically EXPLODED out of its mouth as it flew off into the darkness, before turning around and firing at a fifth. It would've been EPIC if that was a headshot, but the shot just barely scratched a leg. There goes my combo. Don't blame me, no firearm experience here, not any that I remember anyway. The sixth lunged and managed to chomp down on my arm this time, have to give those fuckers credit for tenacity, but it stopped being a problem once I put a bullet through its skull point blank. Messy, that. By then Wolf 2 and 3 had gotten back up, and I think we were ALL surprised when 6 fell away and we saw it didn't even break my skin! I guess they got the message after that, becaus and 7 slinked off pretty quickly, leaving 1 bleeding out and the rest dead. Since 1 was unlikely to survive long anyway with a wound that deep, I put the whining thing out of its misery after I yanked the knife back out and dragged both it and 6 back home.
So, I learned three things last night. One, I am apparently impervious to bites. Two, I am a total badass. Three, roasted wolf meat is delicious, oh so delicious, best thing I've ever tasted as far as I can remember! The juiciness and texture is downright addicting! If only I could get some condiments to make it even better. Also I think I'm going to go on trips like this at NIGHT from now on. Visibility might be lower, but there's far less annoying bugs and the temperature's much more tolerable. Plus, I'm apparently invulnerable, so screw predators! I'll just let the delicious meat come to me!
Ugh, getting tired already even after my nap at the lake, that fight took more out of me than I thought I guess. Bedtime~
Day 5
I'm writing this in the morning of Day 6, these labels are getting a wee bit confusing. At this rate I'm going to end up…what was that word for being active during the night instead of the day? I know it starts with N… Narcotic? Necromantic? Nocturnal? Yeah, nocturnal. What the hell were those other words anyway, are they even real words? Eh, whatever.
Had to throw Wolf 6's body out, by the time I woke up it was already being attacked by flies. Sure roasting it would probably still be fine but it just feels icky now, they could've laid eggs in there for all I know, EURGH. Spent the few hours before sundown gathering leaves off palm trees to make a cover for the cave entrance, hopefully keep the bugs out from now on, but that also blocks out most of the light…enough still gets through when the sun still shines, and if I go out at night anyway it's fine then I guess. Plus, if I really need light I'll just light the bonfire, it's just that I'd rather not waste firewood when I don't have to.
When time came to explore I went in a different direction this time, but progress was significantly slower with my vision hampered like that. Compared to Day 4 though it was a HUGE improvement I have to say! It was just so relaxing I don't even care if I didn't cover as much distance. I could hear the wolves howling again, but either they found some other prey to go after, or they didn't want to deal with me anymore because none showed up. Not much else to hunt neither, unless I'm interested in eating owls or rodents. Wonder if there'll be other creatures like bears deeper in.
Y'know, come to think of it, the whole thing with the wolves feel kind of weird to me in hindsight. Like, I didn't know I was impervious to bites back then and it was literally my first combat situation, against 7 ravenous wolves in fact! I should've been scared out of my wits all things considered, but I wasn't! I'm not even trying to toot my own horn here, while I like being a badass, taking those wolves out just felt too natural. I guess it just confirms my suspicions that I used to be some kind of warrior before I lost my memory and the combat instincts stayed with me. I wonder what kind of person I was before my amnesia? Besides a total badass of course.
While I'm at it, I realized my lack of night vision is really weird after reading through my previous entries again. It didn't take too long for me to see at the BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN, so why don't I have that kind of vision at night now when it's not even nearly as dark? Maybe it was some kind of one-off ability when I woke up and now it's gone, or I'm missing something really obvious. I'll have to look into this.
Anyway as I said, unluckily I didn't find any locations of interest this time around nor any good meat to hunt. Not wanting to return empty-handed however, I plucked some shrooms to make a stew with, those things are edible, right? I mean, they have to be edible, I just ate those flat tan ones and everything's fine, they were delicious boiled and served with coconut milk in fact! There's just something niggling at the back of my head now about this…Something about mushrooms, it's a word that starts with N again… Maybe I'm just too tired to think straight if I can't even remember the words, let it go.
Feeling a little peckish, the mushroom coconut soup wasn't very filling with no meat to back it up, but I'll just have to tolerate it for now, sleep first, eat later. I guess I'll try the orange ones when I wake up.
