"They that have power to hurt and will do none,

That do not do the thing they most do show,

Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,

Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow:"

Sonnet Shakespeare

Life with the Cullens was a constant dull routine. Esme would treat us like children in need of a constant care, Carlisle would play the role as the good altruistic doctor at the local hospital, Edward would be the spoiled brat as always, getting into everyone's heads but especially mine in case I had the urge to slip onto human blood. He was like my own personal custody guard. I had made a few mistakes along the years to ensure my weak link persona. I could sense their disgust and disappointment when Edward told them what I had done but they would always take me back as the good compassionate people they pretended to be but what they didn't know was that they were being played. Those brief get aways were so revitalizing.

Only Emmet and Rosalie were worth to be pretending. I adored Rosalie, her sarcasm and the dark sadistic spark in her made me enjoy her company. I could spend hours talking to her, telling her brief pieces of information about my life before arriving with the Cullens and she did not judge me. I did not feel any repulsion towards me instead she felt a strong admiration and respect for all the things I had endured. Rosalie was not like the others, she knew better to see the bigger picture than to judge based on incoherent prejudices. There was a time a few years ago when we went hunting and she finally told me her past. I had not been noisy, everything that I knew was what Carlisle had told me and I did not want to ask more details but she trusted me. She told me the broken dreams that her fiancé had taken from her but nowadays she did not allow that to bring her down rather she became fierceless. We bonded quite well and I hoped that when the time comes she could realize that there was a better life out there and she would join me, she had become like family to me as Emmet too, part of my family just like the people I had left back at Volterra. Emmet was a good laugh for so much boredom in the house, he was always up to a good fight to maintain my training and not get rusty. We often cause a destruction around. What I admired most of him was the intensity with which he defended me every time the golden boy talked Carlisle into kicking me out which was somehow often.

Once in a couple of months Edward would gather the courage to summon a reunion with Carlisle and demand him as head of the coven to expel me. Edward stand of the fact that I was a constant risk of exposure and a factor of contamination of their already lost souls. That my different upbringing would repercute in the others and the most reasonable option would be my departure. Carlisle would always refuse, for him I was his most ambitious project to add to his currriculum, what more greater achievement than to save a blood thirsty warrior. The loyalties in the family were always divided because of this. Edward of course had Carlisle and Esme between his fingers. Alice protected him to no end, the reason is to me unknown. Rosalie and Emmet sticked by my side every time even if they got a nasty look from the others, they cared for me and it was genuine.

Alice was so insufferable to be around. She constantly tried to model me into her perfect puppet, I naturally had to give in order to keep Alice satisfied that way she would not suspect me and look deeper into my future. Her gift was not reliable but it could give her a brief and general idea of what could happen and I could not risk exposure before the time was adequate.

Our way of life was to simulate to be high school students and as soon as graduation came we would change from residence. Our eternal youth did not allow us to stay long in a certain place, people would begin to question our ability to not age. Old tales of supernatural creatures, although not believed by the scientific population, were spread by all means and believed by certain groups of individuals. Vampires were unreal mythical creatures in the modern ages but little towns always were a little more receptive to supernatural things that people in big cities. My duty to the Volturi continued. I would give reports of our whereabouts periodically. Marcus kept researching about Alice's gift , we needed to learn how to block her or have the upper hand when we fought against them. A mind reader and a seer were tricky opponents to battle, they could foresee your movements in all possible outcomes. And one of the principles Marcus taught me was to know your enemy's abilities, find their weakness and twist it to conquer. If you found yourself at disadvantage you had to change the rules of the game.

With the information I gave the Kings, they had come to the conclusion that the Cullens did not pose a threat but the concentration of gifted vampires in one clan was potentially dangerous if the intentions decided to. Along with the growing events where Carlisle would give moral talks about changing diet to nomads that crossed our path, this was becoming rather problematic. Laws dictate vampires to follow their natural instincts with the precaution of no exposure. But amateurs to the vegetarian style would often lash out on villages after days of not tasting human blood. The mess of their massive killings where hard to cover as years pass by. Our secrecy was at risk more and more with modern times. I had also figured out the key piece of how Carlisle maintain the clan in control with only animal blood to satisfy our thirst. He had a hidden talent, it was a variant of an empath which is why I discover it in the first place, the similarity of the gift could be sense by another which possessed the same path of manipulation concluding in my immunity to his gift. He could persuade a person mentally of an idea he planted therefore that way he convince everyone that it was enough with a deer or a bear without realizing that it was just a cheap trick but his gift contain a flaw, he needed a constant reassurance or else the effect would break in a couple of hours which is why the nomads went on a enormous breakdown after they left us. I had documented every massacre as proof for when the trial against the Cullens arrive.

Then Alice started to get visions of a town in Washington, the moment after they passed the only emotion palpable was pure raw fear. I asked her what had she saw but she was reluctant to tell me the whole truth, I could feel how she hide details until one day I had had enough of her disobedience, if I needed to use rougher means to make her spit out the vision she had I would. One day I took her for a walk and progressively twisted her emotions to a total submissive state. Her vision she told me was like none she ever had, the vision was blurry like there was a signal interruption but she had saw between all the confusion the destruction of the Cullens including her which was enough to terrify her.

-"Jasper, I don't want to lose them. They are all I have. I waited so long to fit with someone I cannot lose them now."- Alice whispered to me, she was trembling in my arms.

-"Alice do not worry dear. You found me and told me we where meant to be,right? Could you even think I would let somebody hurt you or what you love?"-I send her all the confidence and determination I could create and soon I could feel how her emotions began to let go of that stressing anxiety and melt into a relaxing pace. My facade was ready. Whatever was waiting for us in Washington it was the moment I had been waiting for.

-"Jasper how was I so lucky to find you?"

-"I do not know dear, you are the one who saved me .But tell me please, what else did you saw in that vision? Don't be afraid"-My interrogation was subtle but effective, she trusted me.

-"I...I saw you like a demon in black cloak, red eyes and a killer sight."-I had to be careful, this was the first sign of alert to be cautious. She couldn't know all yet.

-"Alice how could that be true?, I have long left that path, I am committed to Carlisle. Do not worry please you know the inadequacy of your visions, think of it as a bad dream when you wake up you'll see the reality of all"
